The book that I read to make this aquarium:
Ecology of the Planted Aquarium by Diana Walstad(Hard cover) amzn.to/2tB4xiZ
Ecology of the Planted Aquarium by Diana Walstad(digital) amzn.to/2svT0Sy
This was my very first attempt at Walstad method setup right after reading her book - first hearing about the book through one of Dustin's Fish Tanks videos.
I actually did this bowl around 2 years ago. The videos are taken from my other youtube channel that was about this bowl. It’s kind of abandoned now, since I don’t have the bowl anymore. I put together all of the videos and decided to put it here, so I could share my experience with all of you. Hope this helps.
Walstad method setup is great when it works. However, as I have mentioned in my previous video, it can be difficult and time consuming for the first 2 months or so, until the plants establish themselves.
After 7 months or so, vallisneria took over the entire tank, and there were hardly any space for my betta to swim around in. Also, the bowl just looked way too overgrown.
I trimmed the vallineria, and it didn’t recover very well. It mostly turned brown from the tips and started to melt.
So, I decided to move my betta to the 5 gallon one that most of you have already seen :
• No Filter, No CO2, No ...
The above link's tank has all of the details about light, substrate, plants list, and everything else in the description.
It is the same setup as this bowl - 50W heater with heater cover so the plants wouldn't get burned, 14W CFL coolwhite, light duration, organic soil, 2~3mm cap gravel...etc.
For the CFL, I'm going by 2~3 watts per gallon rule. that's only for fluorescent. anything higher will most likely cause accelerated algae growth.
I did give it some controlled amount of direct sunlight. I have blinds and the window is facing west, so whenever I had time, I would let the bowl get 1~2 hours max of sunlight. It was not every day, just whenever it was sunny or maybe weekends. It's not a requirement to give it sunlight. It did not cause more algae growth. It actually made the plants grow faster. But I think you should give sunlight only when the plants are already established and thriving.
WATER CHANGE: I didn't do water change for the first week. then I couldn't wait and put in my betta. that was a mistake. It takes average of 2 months for this kind of setup to get established. Only then, is the water "safe" for livestock, IMO. The plants are the filter. If the plants aren't doing well, the livestock won't do well.
So, after putting in my betta, I did water changes often. nearly daily of 5~50%. but also, I put such a thin cap gravel, which was another mistake, the soil leached out too fast. so I had to add more gravel.
I did 5% when there was surface bio-film. I did 50% when the water became too brown. I rarely did 50%. the usual daily water change was around 10~20%. after 2~3 months, I only did weekly water changes of 10~25%.
While all this was going on, my betta did get fin rot, b/c I put him in too early. He did recover completely, but it took a while. I should have put him in around 2 months mark. maybe even 3 months.
IF you don't put any livestock, you don't need to do daily water changes. Only do water change if the water becomes too brown. maximum of 50%. If your cap is thick enough, water should get too brown around once a week. if your water gets too brown in 2~3 days or earlier, you cap gravel size is too big, and/or it's too thin.
This bowl's diameter is about 39cm or 15 inches. around 7.5 gallons, or 30 liters. I got it at a local gardening store.

Slushie. Plushie no, I was...
Your little betta is amazingly cute. He's like "Oh, you're fliming? Hey get me into the shot!" 😁 And when you filmed his bubble nest it almost looked like he was trying to say "Yeah, I made that!" 😜
beta fish made bubbles coz it shows his ready for mating.. that beta fish is a male.. poor little fish he doesnt have lover.
Too bad fishes are brain-dead
Yeah like some people
Haha *rekt*
Some fish are actually fairly intelligent. In fact, I've seen goldfish (including my own) learn who does and does not feed them. I know you were just trolling, but I'm just saying.
lol youre stupid as hell
1:40 shrimp realising how heavy he is :3
I snorted!
you may look back on this video and maybe be a little embarrassed for people to see your mistakes, but i really appreciate it. seeing examples and corrections of mistakes is a really good way to learn. i think youve probably saved many people from making these errors. thank you for sharing it with us.
I've seen those bowls before, but never really felt anything for them. But this is such an inspiration!
It's gorgeous (And the music, my god) and I'm actually keen to try it myself!
Kashmere Art if you do it I will do it??
Kashmere Art what exactly is this whole process called and is it really sustainable ??
The 51/2 month mark made me chuckle. He's just staring out of the bowl at you. "Look what I did, mom."
Yes that was adorable
2:00 just a crip and blood gettin along:)

That looks so fun for the fish. Always exploring! :D
Your living space is overloaded with positive energies. Even your videos are so comfortable and I guess lots of people love your videos too. Serenity, calm, are the words to describe I guess.
I think you are brilliant. This is so beautiful. Great taste, in music also!
I have one question if i may.. What about water movement? I saw that you didnt use any here (or in some other project). Oxygenation is ok? I really wanna set up something like this...
Thank you so much for sharing, one of a kind
wow, thanks. yea, this setup doesn't require water movement. there should be plenty of oxygen for the livestock b/c the plants release oxygen. however, this is only true if the plants are healthy and growing. that's why I suggest waiting 2 months until the plants have been established and thriving, especially if this is your first time trying this type of setup.
I guess the CO2 release isn't an issue considering the relatively small foot print of surface area and amount of plants in there?
thank you! I'm more of a plants guy, not a fish guy.
keep posting this is great
The reason this works is also because the betta has lungs and can breathe air when needed to. If you can just set a normal aquarium up with a small air powered sponge filter and you are good to go.
its 7 gal the plants are the filter
Your pond looks beautiful.
this was so peaceful and interesting, the music was lovely, reminded me of howls moving castle.

HAHAHAHA true
I know this was 2 years ago but this just made me cry with laughter lolol
Just to clear up all the comments, *Wild* Betta do not live in puddles or anything tiny like that. The domesticated betta is used to being in a small space that is warmer, while the smaller and more agile wild betta live in shallow ponds, rice paddies ( actually spread out for miles, when it rains it creates a shallow pool that the roots of the rice protect ), and canals. These all stay warm since they are shallow and easy for the sun to heat up. In my opinion, The minimum for Domestic Betta is 5 gallons, and this tank is 5 gallons. This tank is 7 gallons, this Betta is living a lot better than most with 1 gallon aquariums and plastic little spongebob houses where he has nowhere to hide.
You give me hope sir.
This video is so relaxing but yet full of excitement! I have a Terrarium that I've kept alive for almost a year now and I think this will be the next best challenge! I'm currently in college and the place I'm renting doesn't allow any pets so this will definitely be an awesome idea to try and get a sense that I'm taking care of and keeping something alive. I want to place it on my desk so I can look into the bowl during my study break(:
Thanks for sharing your videos and writing such great and thorough description in the box.
Wow, this is amazing! It's the beauty of projects like this that got me into the hobby to begin with. That is a beautiful tank you have there. Subscribing for sure!
2:05 “hey what’s going on over here”
just turned me on to a new concept. very exciting!!
Finding a bowl like that... Oh how I wish - just the size alone! Beautiful!
I love this so much, beautiful ecosystem in there!!! He looks happy 💞
03:08 "Look what I made!... You see? Look!"
I was going to buy a regular tank but this looked so natural..im having second thoughts.
One of the most relaxing things I've watched in a while .
Watching your videos help so much to relax.
It started cute until you can no longer see anything inside the bowl 😂
Such a beautiful set up. Did you use soil from out in the garden or a known brand organic mix? I've really enjoyed seeing this one develop over the months. Have you ever played around with 'natural setup' deep gravel beds for this type of setup? Somehow the deep gravel bed allows anaerobic build up that consumes nitrates used lots in the marine hobby from what I understand
thanks. it's generic local brand organic potting soil. it has vermicompost and chicken manure compost mixed in. walstad recommends miracle grow organic potting mix. that also has chicken manure compost. yea, I've heard about deep gravel bed setup. it should also work in fresh water. my understanding of it is that it takes a while for it to start working since gravel doesn't have any "nutrients" in it in the beginning.
Thanks for the reply. Yes it takes a very long time. It's taken close for a year for anaerobic bacteria to colonise the media in my canister filter. I'll have to give the deep gravel bed a go at some point! I've ordered a bubble from amazon!
Foo the Flowerhorn Why do you have to place your betta 2 months after ?
That's a beautiful aquarium. Nice work with the video too. I actually felt really relaxed watching it. Thank you.
Wow! So serene and beautiful...bring nature indoors ...love this concept..I will try this too...thank you so much ❤️😊
The bowl looks amazing and everyone in it looks healthy. I've been planning a similar small environment for fiddler crabs but I just might go with shrimp now... hmm. :) Do you know if the two can live peacefully together?
Will do, thanks!
Just beautiful! Where did you buy that bowl?
I bought it at a local gardening store. but you can find a similar one on amazon. search "bubble bowl"
Michael's store in my area had them for 19.99
This is what I’ll be trying. I love the blue, red, yellow shrimp & the “calico” guys. I had a thriving crimson shrimp population in a 20 gal tank. I tinkered too much & the colony crashed. Will try again slowly & small using this method. Am reading Diana Walstead’s “Ecology of the Planted Aquarium”. Thanks for taking the time to make such interesting & detailed vids.
It's so sad and relax too... when I heard that music and watching your fish slowly floating in beautiful bowl.
I really would like to start an ecosystem like this, anyone have any tips to start
Aldaroth hey they just wanted help. Please don’t call names.
The description seems to explain a lot of the process
All natural organic substrate.

"Weeeee....."
Haha cute
Beautiful aquarium. It's just amazing how well aquatic plants can grow in some environments versus others.
This is beautiful... and the music is so soothing...it's relaxing.
Hello
Watch your video
I started the aquarium.
But the color of the water
More and more green.
I do not know why.
Is there any problem?
there might be too much light and too much nutrients in the water. it's hard to say without seeing your setup. if you don't have any fish in there, do a big water change. if you tell me your setup, I might be able to help more.
Oh, Thanks for the reply
The floor is like a video.
This is South Korea, the temperature is high.
The water temperature goes up to 27~28℃
Even with a cooling fan.
Maybe the plants have melted
Does the color of the water change?
The hairgrass turned brown.
My setup
The tank is 35x25x30cm
1 inch organic soil(vermicompost and chicken manure compost)
1.5 inch black sand
Baby tears, Pearl grass cuba, hairgrass, Yamato shrimp
LED light 36pcs, 8.64w
Hanging filter 5w
yea, plants that have not established yet can be more sensitive to temperature. at those temps, they might be ok, but any higher, they might have a hard time. once they are established, they might be able to handle higher temps. plants can melt in the beginning, but if they have new growth, everything should be ok. the color of the water should get brown, not green. when it gets too brown, do 50% water change. the water will continue to get brown for 2~3 months or so. but it should not get brown every day. green water is b/c of a type of algae bloom. if your plants are healthy and growing, you won't get much algae. it's b/c your plants are having a hard time, that's why you got algae bloom. another thing, you shouldn't use LEDs for this kind of setup. CFL(compact florescent light) is the best. I used OSRAM 14W coolwhite color. since your tank is similar size, you should try that. I actually tried 3 different kinds of lights. that was the best one. when I used a LED light, it got algae very fast. b/c you have a filter in there, it'll make your water brown faster b/c there will be more water movement. plants don't need a filter in this kind of setup. the pearl grass should be doing pretty good. is it? how long ago did you set up the tank? do you have livestock in there?
Me when I see the fish: "nooo, not the bowl 😱"
Flowerhorn: "it's a 7.5 gallon"
Me: "oh.. all peace is restored"
Also, great job with all the plants. You've made a wonderful home!
This is really inspiring. To see plants that healthy pearling oxygen without co2 is so cool. Really great job.
I am so impressed! I will definitely have to try this in the future
The second I saw that nest I would have been at the store buying him a female. That was amazing and heartbreaking at the same time.
Did that. Bought a stunning female for my nest making lonely male. She beat the crap out of him! Tore all his fins to bits....poor dude.....
do you do water change?
yes, after 2 months, once a week. but for the first 2 months, it varies. I actually did water change quite often b/c I put my betta in too early. more details are in the description of this video: czcams.com/video/TYrqG3ORTGo/video.html
Water changes are required but never do 70-100% water change fish find it difficult to adjust 20-30% fish will be happy with that.
Distilled water from the store is best ....not tap
Amit Bendale some times it is nessasary such as when 82 out of 86 of my fish died in 2 days due to an ammonia spike. I changed 80 percent and the remaining 14 are still alive
Just watching the video is so calming, gotta watch for more.
Your videos are making me want a shrimp garden really really badly. I'm so in love with those blue and zebra ones!
How does the water stay so clear?
Have aquarium plants, give them light by LED bulb or natural sun, and put algae eaters like the shrimp. Make sure it gets enough sun bc as long as the plants are doing fine no algae will grow. Algae eaters backup
I had an awesome aquarium fully stable and big. After 2 years of beautiness my dad decided to paint the fucking furniture inside the aquarium's room. All the goddamn fish died cuz of the fumes. Thank you dad!😠
Kid Kool rip
Sam Eijkenboom yup....
What TF is the point of this comment?
What?! Oh my Lord..I hated when other ppl would mess with my tanks thinking they were helping me out. Atleast they should educate themselves b4 hand..
Kid you sound like a well educated classy young man....
I am seriously thinking of making such a bowl tank. Very impressive.
lovely music for the background. Could watch your visa all day. So relaxing. I have an old 10 gal rectangle tank. If it doesn't mean I may try this.
Tbh, I probably couldn't have kept the fishes for that long. They'd probably die in the next 24 hrs or so...😐
Been there - done that....waaaaaaaaaa
The music almost reminded me of Minecraft!! ..

THIS VIDEO HEALED MY CANCER
is therw anyone who has played Cube Escapw before? the BGM in this video reminds me of it and make me feel a bit afraid/?
Anisa Hna what a great game! Seasons is one of my favourites (with Case 23)
Wow, this looks really awesome! Maybe I should get me such a bowl, too. Thanks for sharing, I really love to see the progress.
Thanks for sharing the vid. You inspired me to set up my very first planted aquarium! I opted for a fish bowl (like you) because it gives 360 view. I’m amazed by the growth of your plants. Kudos.
good luck.
Looks great but I just can't accept a bowl as a good way of keeping fish. A better setup would use the same plants and fish in a small 23 litre giving plenty of surface area and filtration. Also can't accept the plant growth in the initial week I would expect some melt back and time for the plant to establish.
This is walstad method. If you've never heard of it, I understand your skepticism. the bowl argument is a hasty generalization in my view. The plant growth is true as shown in the video. if you see the video more carefully, not all of the plants did well. some grew amazingly, and yes, a few species did melt.
Foo the Flowerhorn sounds like I need to do some reading! Thanks for the reply :)
bobfal this is acceptable for betta and shrimp. They don't need water flow or huge spaces and this is 7 gallons which is three times the size of the average betta bowl. The plants do their own filtration and this is an efficient planted system
a bowl is fine the fish is happy
Betta live in stagnant water in the wild and only require a few gallons. The plants filter just fine, often in a safer manner than filters. I agree with you on the overgrowth and I'd still do fairly frequent water changes.
Can’t keep my fish alive for 2 days WITH a filter
Oh yeah lot of people have this problem. Have you tried cycling it? (look up: “Nitrogen cycle” if unfamiliar with “cycling”). If so, try regulating the temperature (typically 68-78 degrees for most tropical freshwater fish), researching the desired fish’s living parameters to suit the amount of gallons for your aquarium, slowly acclimating the fish while still in the bag to the temperature of your tank, adding beneficial bacteria, driving slow and carefully when transporting the fish from the pet store, remove access from dangerous pets like cats, and conditioning your tap water with solution before adding fish. If all of these steps are done, you should have like a 97% survival rate of the fish for at least like a month. But if you won a goldfish it at the carnival or accidentally buy an inactive/weak/dying fish it will likely die though either way, but these steps typically work unless your fish provider sells you diseased fish
This was so peaceful and beautiful to watch
This was so relaxing, enjoyed every second of it.
You know I kinda feel bad thinking about how the fish have that space only and no where else to go which is sad and scary
The music goes with it
Nate Cue you're a big human looking from the outside. of course it seems small to you lol.
Just Breathe Well I guess you are right but they do live in a bigger space in their habitat
Nate Cue the bowl is 7 gallon. Plenty of space. A lot of bettas I know live in a gallon tank and are perfectly healthy.
Actually Bettas live in extremely small ponds in their natural habitat, usually even smaller than this.
Doesn't look like there's much room for the Betta,
I moved him the 5 gallon one. mentioned in the description and I pinned the comment.
Your videos are so amazing... Thank you so much for sharing! They inspired me to do my own low tech tank. I finished the setup today using the same method you describe. Hope it all works out!
Loved his bubble nest, so cute and a very relaxing video😊💖
Huh betta bowl, peasants....
I've got an alpha bowl
Love your fucking pic
,,😁
Is this alpha in ml
Dude, you should take out the betta, all the fishes develop vision and orientation problems due to the distortion effect of the bowl, read about it
um, I guess you didn't read the description. please check it out. I have never seen him disoriented. certain fish might get disoriented in a little bowl. this is a 7.5 gallon bowl jammed packed with plants. I suppose fast swimming fish like tetra might get disoriented in a small bowl where the curvature is high. I have read about the distortion effect of bowls in the past. IMO, I think it's exaggerated to discourage people from using small bowls with wrong type of fish.
Sebastian AF.. you are right but only for empty bowls with no gravel or plants.. and only small bowls. That fish is tiny.. and its bowl is HUGE and filled with plants like a jungle. Use YOUR EYES.. you can see its not got any vision or orientation problems..... you seem to have those.

It's my fourth watch and suddenly I am addicted to this channel. Decided to subscribe.
that's an amazing set up. So perfect for an betta. Id really like to get my two guys in this type. Thanks for the video.
i wish the fish had a female partner
He would kill her really quickly. They have to get used to each other with a separator so the male won't attack her; after he gets used to her (you'll know when once the female has a stripy pattern) you can let them mate, but once the eggs are in the bubble nest, you have to remove the female or he will kill her trying to protect the eggs
Hidden Path WOWEE VERY EDUCATIONAL
D-Schloss the boss H-town rowlin hard You really should never cohabit two betta together. They may not show aggression right away but they inevitably will. Keeping betta together has no benefit to the fish (except if you go through the breeding process the person above me described). They are solitary animals and would get stressed and more prone to illness if kept together. This goes for betta sororities you will see often as well. No matter how large your tank is, it will always end in the tragic deaths of most -if not all- betta involved. Thinking a betta needs a 'friend' is dangerous anthropomorphism. Plus, with a bowl this size, it's already a little bit overstocked with the additions of the shrimp and what looks to be a cory catfish and adding another fish would be dangerous.
I commented the same thing, I guess they deleted my comment :T
It's an oto catfish. Cory catfish are bottom feeders this appears to be a sucker. And they eat veggies only. They need to be in schools and need at least 20 gallons to be happy. This is exceedingly small. Every other fish in here tho should be fine. Only other complaint is shrimp need more water aeration than I think this person is providing
Beautiful bowl. Congratulations.
That's amazing I can't believe this is your first!
Thank you very much for creating & sharing this! This approach is new to me, usually aquariums make me cry
Brilliant, been looking around for something like this for ages!! Thanks for all the information
very nice set up. I'm going to try this
You did a great job out there!
This looks so cool! Will be trying most likely
Wow! What a great job for a first timer! Your betta must be happy! What a beautiful little ecosystem in that little bowl. I think you'll do great with larger tanks. Just make sure to always do your research
That is a big bowl and very nice set up for a betta, oh and nice shrimps that would be like paradise
wow! the bowl is very good and i love the crawfish and the fish, they are sooo cute!!!
This is one of my favorite videos. So relaxing nice music Thanks
I want to do this so bad. Good job by the way it looks awsome and the beta is so happy
the best description after plantation & observation ,, thankssssss a lotttt
This is amazing! It's so much closer to a natural aquatic ecosystem, what with all of the plants and filter feeders. I bet the beta is loving this, since they're found wild in rice paddies and other flooded grass fields.
Such beautiful shirmp man. I love them. I love these tanks. I'm going to try this in 5 gallon I have.
Looks like I’m getting a new book... or renting it from the library if I can find it. Lol I keep seeing the book mentioned in your videos and I think I should get it. Thank you for inspiring me. I am definitely going to try this in the 5 gallon version you have done for my beta... going to have to get a new 5 gallon tank as he is already on one and I wouldn’t want to risk hurting him
So relaxing while watching this video. I really love it.
this is such a lovely Video, I just remember my tank with Cardinal fish and my RCS over run the entire set.up
Wow this is sooo relaxing. Makes me want to build my own aquarium, but I don't know if I would have the patience to take care of it
