    The book that I read to make this aquarium:
    Ecology of the Planted Aquarium by Diana Walstad(Hard cover) amzn.to/2tB4xiZ
    Ecology of the Planted Aquarium by Diana Walstad(digital) amzn.to/2svT0Sy
    This was my very first attempt at Walstad method setup right after reading her book - first hearing about the book through one of Dustin's Fish Tanks videos.
    I actually did this bowl around 2 years ago. The videos are taken from my other youtube channel that was about this bowl. It’s kind of abandoned now, since I don’t have the bowl anymore. I put together all of the videos and decided to put it here, so I could share my experience with all of you. Hope this helps.
    Walstad method setup is great when it works. However, as I have mentioned in my previous video, it can be difficult and time consuming for the first 2 months or so, until the plants establish themselves.
    After 7 months or so, vallisneria took over the entire tank, and there were hardly any space for my betta to swim around in. Also, the bowl just looked way too overgrown.
    I trimmed the vallineria, and it didn’t recover very well. It mostly turned brown from the tips and started to melt.
    So, I decided to move my betta to the 5 gallon one that most of you have already seen :
    • No Filter, No CO2, No ...
    The above link's tank has all of the details about light, substrate, plants list, and everything else in the description.
    It is the same setup as this bowl - 50W heater with heater cover so the plants wouldn't get burned, 14W CFL coolwhite, light duration, organic soil, 2~3mm cap gravel...etc.
    For the CFL, I'm going by 2~3 watts per gallon rule. that's only for fluorescent. anything higher will most likely cause accelerated algae growth.
    I did give it some controlled amount of direct sunlight. I have blinds and the window is facing west, so whenever I had time, I would let the bowl get 1~2 hours max of sunlight. It was not every day, just whenever it was sunny or maybe weekends. It's not a requirement to give it sunlight. It did not cause more algae growth. It actually made the plants grow faster. But I think you should give sunlight only when the plants are already established and thriving.
    WATER CHANGE: I didn't do water change for the first week. then I couldn't wait and put in my betta. that was a mistake. It takes average of 2 months for this kind of setup to get established. Only then, is the water "safe" for livestock, IMO. The plants are the filter. If the plants aren't doing well, the livestock won't do well.
    So, after putting in my betta, I did water changes often. nearly daily of 5~50%. but also, I put such a thin cap gravel, which was another mistake, the soil leached out too fast. so I had to add more gravel.
    I did 5% when there was surface bio-film. I did 50% when the water became too brown. I rarely did 50%. the usual daily water change was around 10~20%. after 2~3 months, I only did weekly water changes of 10~25%.
    While all this was going on, my betta did get fin rot, b/c I put him in too early. He did recover completely, but it took a while. I should have put him in around 2 months mark. maybe even 3 months.
    IF you don't put any livestock, you don't need to do daily water changes. Only do water change if the water becomes too brown. maximum of 50%. If your cap is thick enough, water should get too brown around once a week. if your water gets too brown in 2~3 days or earlier, you cap gravel size is too big, and/or it's too thin.
    This bowl's diameter is about 39cm or 15 inches. around 7.5 gallons, or 30 liters. I got it at a local gardening store.

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  Před 7 lety +88

      wow, thanks. yea, this setup doesn't require water movement. there should be plenty of oxygen for the livestock b/c the plants release oxygen. however, this is only true if the plants are healthy and growing. that's why I suggest waiting 2 months until the plants have been established and thriving, especially if this is your first time trying this type of setup.

      The reason this works is also because the betta has lungs and can breathe air when needed to. If you can just set a normal aquarium up with a small air powered sponge filter and you are good to go.

    Just to clear up all the comments, *Wild* Betta do not live in puddles or anything tiny like that. The domesticated betta is used to being in a small space that is warmer, while the smaller and more agile wild betta live in shallow ponds, rice paddies ( actually spread out for miles, when it rains it creates a shallow pool that the roots of the rice protect ), and canals. These all stay warm since they are shallow and easy for the sun to heat up. In my opinion, The minimum for Domestic Betta is 5 gallons, and this tank is 5 gallons. This tank is 7 gallons, this Betta is living a lot better than most with 1 gallon aquariums and plastic little spongebob houses where he has nowhere to hide.

    Such a beautiful set up. Did you use soil from out in the garden or a known brand organic mix? I've really enjoyed seeing this one develop over the months. Have you ever played around with 'natural setup' deep gravel beds for this type of setup? Somehow the deep gravel bed allows anaerobic build up that consumes nitrates used lots in the marine hobby from what I understand

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  Před 7 lety +8

      thanks. it's generic local brand organic potting soil. it has vermicompost and chicken manure compost mixed in. walstad recommends miracle grow organic potting mix. that also has chicken manure compost. yea, I've heard about deep gravel bed setup. it should also work in fresh water. my understanding of it is that it takes a while for it to start working since gravel doesn't have any "nutrients" in it in the beginning.

    • @matthewsmith22
      @matthewsmith22 Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the reply. Yes it takes a very long time. It's taken close for a year for anaerobic bacteria to colonise the media in my canister filter. I'll have to give the deep gravel bed a go at some point! I've ordered a bubble from amazon!

      This is South Korea, the temperature is high.

      Even with a cooling fan.
      Maybe the plants have melted
      Does the color of the water change?
      The hairgrass turned brown.
      My setup
      The tank is 35x25x30cm
      1 inch organic soil(vermicompost and chicken manure compost)
      1.5 inch black sand
      Baby tears, Pearl grass cuba, hairgrass, Yamato shrimp
      LED light 36pcs, 8.64w
      Hanging filter 5w

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  Před 7 lety +3

      yea, plants that have not established yet can be more sensitive to temperature. at those temps, they might be ok, but any higher, they might have a hard time. once they are established, they might be able to handle higher temps. plants can melt in the beginning, but if they have new growth, everything should be ok. the color of the water should get brown, not green. when it gets too brown, do 50% water change. the water will continue to get brown for 2~3 months or so. but it should not get brown every day. green water is b/c of a type of algae bloom. if your plants are healthy and growing, you won't get much algae. it's b/c your plants are having a hard time, that's why you got algae bloom. another thing, you shouldn't use LEDs for this kind of setup. CFL(compact florescent light) is the best. I used OSRAM 14W coolwhite color. since your tank is similar size, you should try that. I actually tried 3 different kinds of lights. that was the best one. when I used a LED light, it got algae very fast. b/c you have a filter in there, it'll make your water brown faster b/c there will be more water movement. plants don't need a filter in this kind of setup. the pearl grass should be doing pretty good. is it? how long ago did you set up the tank? do you have livestock in there?

      Have aquarium plants, give them light by LED bulb or natural sun, and put algae eaters like the shrimp. Make sure it gets enough sun bc as long as the plants are doing fine no algae will grow. Algae eaters backup

  • @bobfal
    @bobfal Před 7 lety +122

    Looks great but I just can't accept a bowl as a good way of keeping fish. A better setup would use the same plants and fish in a small 23 litre giving plenty of surface area and filtration. Also can't accept the plant growth in the initial week I would expect some melt back and time for the plant to establish.

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  Před 7 lety +120

      This is walstad method. If you've never heard of it, I understand your skepticism. the bowl argument is a hasty generalization in my view. The plant growth is true as shown in the video. if you see the video more carefully, not all of the plants did well. some grew amazingly, and yes, a few species did melt.

      bobfal this is acceptable for betta and shrimp. They don't need water flow or huge spaces and this is 7 gallons which is three times the size of the average betta bowl. The plants do their own filtration and this is an efficient planted system

      Betta live in stagnant water in the wild and only require a few gallons. The plants filter just fine, often in a safer manner than filters. I agree with you on the overgrowth and I'd still do fairly frequent water changes.

      @a7c777 Před 4 lety

      Oh yeah lot of people have this problem. Have you tried cycling it? (look up: “Nitrogen cycle” if unfamiliar with “cycling”). If so, try regulating the temperature (typically 68-78 degrees for most tropical freshwater fish), researching the desired fish’s living parameters to suit the amount of gallons for your aquarium, slowly acclimating the fish while still in the bag to the temperature of your tank, adding beneficial bacteria, driving slow and carefully when transporting the fish from the pet store, remove access from dangerous pets like cats, and conditioning your tap water with solution before adding fish. If all of these steps are done, you should have like a 97% survival rate of the fish for at least like a month. But if you won a goldfish it at the carnival or accidentally buy an inactive/weak/dying fish it will likely die though either way, but these steps typically work unless your fish provider sells you diseased fish

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  Před 7 lety +68

      um, I guess you didn't read the description. please check it out. I have never seen him disoriented. certain fish might get disoriented in a little bowl. this is a 7.5 gallon bowl jammed packed with plants. I suppose fast swimming fish like tetra might get disoriented in a small bowl where the curvature is high. I have read about the distortion effect of bowls in the past. IMO, I think it's exaggerated to discourage people from using small bowls with wrong type of fish.

      He would kill her really quickly. They have to get used to each other with a separator so the male won't attack her; after he gets used to her (you'll know when once the female has a stripy pattern) you can let them mate, but once the eggs are in the bubble nest, you have to remove the female or he will kill her trying to protect the eggs

      D-Schloss the boss H-town rowlin hard You really should never cohabit two betta together. They may not show aggression right away but they inevitably will. Keeping betta together has no benefit to the fish (except if you go through the breeding process the person above me described). They are solitary animals and would get stressed and more prone to illness if kept together. This goes for betta sororities you will see often as well. No matter how large your tank is, it will always end in the tragic deaths of most -if not all- betta involved. Thinking a betta needs a 'friend' is dangerous anthropomorphism. Plus, with a bowl this size, it's already a little bit overstocked with the additions of the shrimp and what looks to be a cory catfish and adding another fish would be dangerous.

      It's an oto catfish. Cory catfish are bottom feeders this appears to be a sucker. And they eat veggies only. They need to be in schools and need at least 20 gallons to be happy. This is exceedingly small. Every other fish in here tho should be fine. Only other complaint is shrimp need more water aeration than I think this person is providing
