Let's analyze my absolute favorite fight from Volume 3! The tournament FNKI fight!
That roast was so powerful it made Weiss switch up her entire fighting style.
Some of the more janky bits aside, this fight makes me realize that in the first 3 seasons, they really gave everyone a unique fighting style. Even with simple weapons, they went extra hard on a creative fighting style, making them as interesting as the more mechanically interesting weapons. Here’s hoping it comes back in the next volume!

Flynt and Neon are the best characters. I'm not biased or anything.

2:30 maybe the intent was that Weiss was using the glyph to push herself forward against Flynts attack, and that's why she stumbles forward once he stops?
If I remember correctly, the black glyphs are meant to hold stuffs with greater force than the white's because it is infused with gravity dust. And when Weiss moves forward with greater gravity, against Flynt's attack, she must have use a much greater force. So after that she would stumble forward because of inertia, which she did
White propells/accelerates things, black holds stuff down. The black glyphs were ment to anchor her in place and keep her from being blown away
@@OzyLellowen This; in both clips she showed, the black glyphs clearly change color before launching anything. Black glyphs hold objects down so they can then be launched by changing its nature at the last second.
Okay embarrassing confession time about this fight. When I first watched this fight I SOMEHOW didn’t know about Neon Cat and so thought she was a Golden Lion Tamarin monkey Faunus because her hair for SOME REASON looked vaguely like the fur on their heads. I deadass thought because of this that she was a reference to a dancing monkey and that Flint was her music player. Which is so mind boggling now because a dancing monkey isn’t close to a fairy tale.
ME TOO! I thought she was a monkey Faunus too! When I was told she was Nyan cat I was like, “then… why is she a monkey?” Lol
If it wasn't for the rainbows I would have thought she was a monkey just by how her tail looks similar to Sun's tail.

Thinking about it, why haven't they made more Faunus based on modern online animals?

Can I just say, that I love Neon's weapon! Despite being such as simplistic design, it's creative to see a pair of glow stick nunchaku that actually bend and snap, and that's even how she activates the dust inside her weapon.
RWBY today could use more weapons like Neon's if they're going to keep giving important characters more seemingly mundane weapons.
Science nerd here, Yang probably couldn't float in the instance you remarked on, unless the vortex from flynt was causing a significant amount of lift. Of course, this can be hand waved my dust magic.
Also, I cannot count the number of times I have watched this fight just because of how fun it was. A lot of the small details pointed out in this video were things I already noticed, but it was great to see things I also missed.
One fun thing that I always remarked on during the fight was whenever flynt was actively playing his trumpet but had some kind of facial reaction, his mouth would move and even show teeth behind the mouthpiece. Can't really make mouth movements while playing a trumpet, and showing teeth would just stop playing altogether. I play trumpet, so these are the little things I notice.
I think its supposed to work like a faster version of those things from Portal 2, where its designed to keep the target inside the cone while it pushes you away. But yeah, that's not really something that is easy to justify with physics . . . "Its -magic- dust, we don't have to explain it"
My favorite fight will always be team JNPR's first fight. Jaune calls out "Flower Power" and everything just stops while the team try to figure out what he's talking about. Just the meta humor poking fun at team RWBY's combo moves, only for Nora to one-shot the opponents.
That scene firmly cemented Nora as my favorite character

I just wish Flynt had a more interesting fighting style. At the end of the day he essentially just has a gun that he points at his enemy, he doesn't really show any particular skill other than his one duo attack with Neon. The random flips he sometimes does before attacking just make me seethe because they're clearly trying to inject some style with absolutely no purpose, as opposed to everyone else who incorporates styles into their fighting naturally; it just comes across as lazy.
Of course his weapon also brings up the question of, if a person just standing still and playing the trumpet can rival other huntsmen, why pretty much everyone doesn't use this weapon.
It would be cool if his weapon could shapeshift into different brass instruments, like a tuba with such a low pitch that it causes the earth to quake. Or maybe a tenor horn that functions as a portable mortar, or perhaps a saxophone that can hypnotize your opponents. Maybe even a vuvuzela that can play the most annoying tune in the world at earsplitting volume.
After watching this again I can't help it laugh at the two yangs because it looks like the other one is trying to talk to her and she just throat punches her
For a single frame, there was a battle of "Which Yang gets to be the real one" lol!

Flint has the best design and weapon and I’m totally not biased because I’m a trumpet player. The drip is too much, and the overconfidence on this man is so accurate to us trumpet players. Because we are the coolest in the band, I don’t make the rules, but thems the rules
Also, my favorite fight strategy is the ‘piss them off’ strategy. It’s something I use in my writing all the time cause it’s a great strategy for an MC to use
He also has a solid design too. Black white grey and a pop of cilor on the hat and collar. But the layering on the outfit is just *chef kiss* and the way his pops of color change whenever he uses his semblance.

That was actually a pretty good fight to me.
@@theamazingmaymay123 right. It proved that raw power doesn't win a fight. It even showed how formidable Mercury is even when outnumbered.
I would like to point out that Flynt's Killer Quartet clones do exactly what he does, each one slightly delayed from the one before.
This means that Flynt can play a single line of notes in such a way that when the delayed repetitions overlay with each other, it actually sounds better than his solo playing.
I miss how Yang shoots her gauntlets. Proper haymaker swings to launch those projectiles instead of the current ones where she throws kiddie punches or hell shoot as if she's megaman

14:40 I don't think that was a goof, I think that's meant to be the 3D equivalent of a smear frame; when it's playing at max speed you read the movement properly and it looks smoother; yeah it doesn't work if you slow it down, but it's not meant to be slowed down; it's meant to be watched at normal speed. They've done it before, I'm sure Adam had like 6 arms in shot because it was moving so fast.
I was about to say that, I think it's straigth up called 'duplicates' in animation, is pretty similar to smear and stretch effects.
yeah that's why its hard to judge animations frame-by-frame, if it looks fine in real time that's really the only thing that matters. some of these points seemed to overlook that aspect of animation
Don't forget Blake in practically every fight she has(though in her case it's diagetic)
I love Weiss’s reactions and general “what the fuck?” look when something strange happens.
Flint could've dropped kicked Weiss in the face when she was on the floor, hell anything then just turning his back to her all so she can try and take him out.
Man this fight became my personality for a bit when I first watched it. I muttered "never miss a beat" when working and STILL listen to Neon to this day. I even tried taking the advice of the song for a while to smile more and calm the hell down lmao

Still I never really got what the point of her “rainbow semblance,” was. Did it add to her evasiveness? Or was it just a nod to her Nan cat inspiration and that’s it.

Definitely points to Flint and Neon for using the strategy of intentionally pissing off you’re enemy’s. After all it’s said that “if you can get you’re opponent angry, there already 20% less effective.” And not allot of people do that.
Apparently it is similar to Rubys ability where it is produced by her going at full speed although it probably does make it harder to hit her because you know there’s a giant rainbow trail

Looks like an acceleration Semblance to me, what with one shot of her coming to a full stop before instantly boosting to max speed for a charge like she's in a modern Sonic game
One of my favorite fights of the entire series, instantly became one of my favorite episodes when it came out for the music, vibes, and awesome use of powers ^^
I like this fight because despite still having her "punch first ask questions later" attitude with fighting, yang is still willing to fight smartly
The double Yangs could have actually been an attempt at an animation smear in 3d? It's hard to tell but it's not always a goof when you see something odd like that.

2:30 weiss' glyphs are imbued with dust. The black glyph is gravity dust that she uses to manipulate the gravity around the glyph, to make something heavier (like how gravity dust bullets hit harder). & when she launches off of it, she immediately switches to wind to launch. You can see the black glyph turn white when she launches something
Making your opponent angry can backfire severely and it's what caused them to lose the fight since that's what that emotion is for
They're making a angry made her focus even more and think even smarter
Also Weiss was using those glyphs to prepare her for its awards him not to hold her in place that's why she stumbled forward like that

I really enjoy the singing coming from Weiss's gliffs, and the following vocals in the music, it's a fun way to highlight her fight with flynt and call back to how she's canonically a singer.. dispite us rarely seeing that in the show.

No, the animation made everything feel defined and really enhanced the fight choreography early on. The action just feels meh now.

Perhaps regular glyphs and gravity glyphs can do the exact same things, gravity is just much stronger. However I think only gravity glyphs can be passed through, they have a pull to them that keeps people in the center of the glyph, or they can launch people, so basically glyphs can do anything lol

Notice how after the force from Flynt is gone, she goes lurching forward? I think instead of locking herself down, Weiss was using it to push herself forward. (Oh, I'm noticing people are also catching this)
Also yes, animation clones in a particular synch, or delayed synch is not fun, nor easy and it's one of those subtle details I always go "Fuck yeah bro" when I see it.

Another great analysis. I love Neon as a character but I'm also glad you called out all the things that made this fight look janky or feel wrong because of the characters' logic. When Yang charged at Neon, it could've been much more dynamic AND drawn Flynt's attention if Neon had dodged/grabbed onto Yang and twirled them into an insanely fast spin, completely controlling Yang's attack and turning it to Neon's advantage, THAT could've been the "uh oh!" moment that made Flynt abandon his finishing move with Weiss.
This season was plagued with si many strange narrative choices when it came to the fights and the characters' logic in them. Not only did things feel too long AND too janky-fast at times, but the fighters' actions and responses didn't match up with what we'd been shown of them so far.
Omygod the neon song is my everything, this is the most fun fight, and this season is the best season.

Yeah I don’t think they were much of an upgrade. And her long range blasts are first seen in her trailer before the show itself. And that trailer is supposed to be canon but eh I guess.

Being able to detonate on demand is a pretty useful ability. For one, she doesn’t have to aim as long as she secured an attachment, and even if she didn’t, she could simply lay a trap. It might not be necessary all the time, but it could give her an edge against something impervious to bullets or against tunneling foes that spend less time in a state where they can be hit. Slip a mine on them and blow them up when they try to hide.
Bomber Man has remotely detonated bombs as an upgrade that let you control when explosions happen instead of racing against your fuses. It takes a lot of risk out of laying your bombs, so I can picture similar utility for Yang.
Can you analyze the bestest fight (in terms of choreography imho) Pyrrha Vs. team Cardin. It’s truly a master class in establishing op characters without making the enemies dumb.

Just to bring up the double Yang thing, it’s a very common animation trick for 2D animation
I can agree the mistakes were made but it helped them fix some of there flaws and this was a fun fight because I saw these in so many amvs but mine was sssn vs indg I'm not sure how to spell but yeah and it's actually fun to see the team actually interact with each other than their love interest

And the fact that when Yang lands the final shot on Neon, she OBLITERATES her. She just disappears
As a rollerblade skater like Neon, I really don't think she should have been able to do even half of what she did but I love it nonetheless because she is such a fun character and also anime logic is a good enough excuse for me.
This was a super fun fight and still probably one of my favorites.
To be fair, she is a cat, and her tail would allow her to balance in all sorts of ways humans couldn't

It's not my favorite fight, but I'm happy people like it! And hey, at least this fight is funner then most of the fights in volume 8.
I would Absolutely Love to see this Reanimated in the Maya engine, I hope thats something RT does in the future is go back and Reanimate some fights from volume 1, 2 and 3 just for like a one off video on their website or CZcams.

I wouldn't consider that Yang clone an animation goof, it's just one if those tricks we animators use sometimes to better show trajectory, movement and speed
Im mixed about the double yang thing, because I cant tell if it was a goof, or an attempt at doing a smear frame. you already pointed out how they did the weird stretch smear for neon, and doubling is another way to do it. But its weird that they only did it once if they were trying to do it.
overall though i did like this fight alot when i first watched rwby. It was probably one of the more fun fights and it didnt have another stomp ending (the rwby, jnpr, AND SSSN fight kind of end with everyone being taken out at once which kind of sours the fight for me). This one felt like a more balanced fight. My biggest gripe is that I wish flint could have had an actual fighting style. Standing his ground and playing the trumpet is cool, coco kind of does that, but she can also fight up close. Imagine Flint skillfully dodging while he plays or fighting with his feat when people get close. Maybe even go the basic route of having him beat people with his trumpet, or use the trumpet for movement
this and Qrow v.s. Winter are the best fights hands down

This was one of the first fights I've seen of rwby it was different from the others and very enjoyable seeing our main characters have to resort to a completely different fighting style
Also blake and ruby running to sit down was too funny

Also we can see that the model of Weiss has nothing in between her legs literally as in like there's just nothing of a atmospheric destruction! Look I know that they could like be worried about Underwear shots, But Yang wears shorts I feel like Weiss would be someone who would wear something underneath that skirt to keep her dignity about! This is the real reason why 95% of all anime Magical girl shows have the magical girls wearing swimsuits as part of their uniforms! It doesn't look good when your legs look like they're literally coming out of the ether! Also isn't it Interesting that neon is focused on taunting Yang, When she has a bigger connection to Weiss being you know former family friends and all!

Okay, about that jump. You're right but Im really dusty in my math/physics stuff. Yang jumps for a second, a normal jump might I add, goes off screen and then the next second she hovers back from she came from for another second. For this to happen in the way it does Flints trumpet must exert enough force to cancel the force of the initial jump from Yang but that doesnt explain the hover. Since Flints is a constant force and Yang isnt she should either slide to the ground or be sent flying depending on the force impose on her by Trumpet.
For yang to hover like that she would have to need something exerting force behind her or below her. Gravity it still pulling everyone down at all times.
This makes me think Flint's (weapon)Trumpet might act as a sort of wind tunnel on its own. Which implies Flint has to have some mighty lungs to be able to destroy the concept of physics like that!
Lets just say it was the wind dust.
@@Mike_Dubo I was trying to capture more of a real world physics parallel rather than speculate on show lore. Closer thing I can think of for an horizontal zero gravity hoover is one of those planes that go high altitude for 0g.
At around 2:40 I think Weiss is using the black Glyphs to push herself forward, because the wight ones would only keep her in place and she wants to overpower Flynn's trumpet

At 14:40 I don’t think that’s an animation goof. I think that it’s actually supposed to be a smear frame, witch is a frame meant to convey motion bluer when you can’t . A common technique when doing smears is two have two of something which you can see often in cartoons from the 30s or more recently in frozen 2 with the wolf chase scene on some frames Olaf has multiple of the same limb. Though I can’t say for certain we would need to ask whoever animated that scene to know for sure
"Shotguns aren't known for their accuracy" yes, that's why they're used to hunt flying, moving small targets called "birds". Shotties are commonly perceived as inaccurate high-power close-range guns because game balance needs them to be. In reality, they're anything but. The problem with them is that you need smart ai to take advantage of your far wider windows of vulnerability. Plus, they don't have nearly as good armor and cover penetration, even if they blow thinner things way harder than ARs (like doors when breaching). Overall, shotguns deal less damage when up against armored targets (which is safe to assume most modern warfare participants are, to a certain degree) but excel at utility and are much more reliable.
And to go off on one, I mean just look at the nozzle of a shotgun does that long steel tube look just for decor to people? I mean for real, if the pellets get blasted out at the chamber part (aka the beginning of the shotty barrel idk I'm not good with fancy gun structure words) and their momentum moves them forward, is that nozzle there only to, like, make them reach farther by a distance equal to its length? It's there to diminish spread so the fucking thing can hit at a reasonable distance the small unarmored targets it was made to hunt. In fact, snipers are less accurate than shotguns. Yeah, I said it. A sniper needs not only a shooter but also a spotter. That isn't just for company so the sniper doesn't get lonely. The thing has monstruous range and damage, yes, but when you need more skill to hit shit with it than you need with just about any other ballistic weapon then it's the point you realize the weapon isn't accurate. The shooter needs to be in order to compensate.
Flynt didn't hate Weiss he hated her dad, she was unfortunately the only Schnee present so he took his frustration out on her

Honestly I didn't even care about the small technical errors in this fight. I've watched it a million times because it's my favorite, so of course I noticed some of them, but this was still when CRWBY was getting their bearings with animation. I freaking loved the music, the taunts, and the parings. To me, this fight was RWBY at it's peak, even if Rooster Teeth was still figuring out the technical aspects.
Also, while Weiss's white glyphs are meant to serve as platforms, they have yet to be used to keeping her upright when there's a strong force pushing against her, like the force from Flint's trumpet. The black glyphs repelling her serve to counteract the force that's pushing her backward. This is also why she rushes forward so much when he stops attacking her. I think it would've been a little clearer if the glyphs were slightly angled towards Flint to demonstrate them pushing Weiss towards him.
