  • Flinders Ranges by 4WD Sadly, this is probably the last time someone will record the drive up to Mt Gill at the Warraweena Private Conservation Park. The trustees decided to not renew the lease from long-term manager Stony and want to close all the tracks to the public.
The Mt Gill 4wd track is definitely one of the more challenging tracks in the Flinders and is on my top 3 list of most favourite Flinders Ranges 4wd tracks.

Awesome....Warraweena is a gem and I spent 3 days there about 10 years ago. We stayed at one of the bushman huts and did the Mt Gill track also. Slippy drive out on the cambered road after 15mm of rain.

Being a member of a 4WD club here in SA we have been informed that Warraweena will be staying open which is great news if it stays that way.

Great video. Epic drive, so envious. Hopefully my turn next year 🙂 Can believe they are trying to close everything these days, if they are not for us, who are they for!

Thats terrible news about the closure of the Warraweena tracks. I have been there twice in the past when I was living in Adelaide and that is my favorite Flinders destination. It's really a special location. I was looking forward to one day leading a trip there with people from my current 4WD club in Melbourne.

Hi Stefan, our 4WDSA delegate updated us plus see below response from "Save Warraweena" Facebook page:
RESPONSE FROM WETLANDS AND WILDLIFE -
I received a call today from one of the wetlands and wildlife directors and according to him they are not looking at closing the park down.
From what I got out of the phone call, they want to keep the park open. He said it makes no sense for them to close it down but they also don’t like the direction it is heading in. They are not sure what the outcome will be but I think they are looking at a possible restructure or something similar. They have a meeting once every quarter so they will keep us updated as it goes on.
The main thing is for now, no they are not closing it down, but I guess in the next 12-24 months expect some changes.
Thanks for everyone's support and it is good to finally get an answer and some clarity on the issue!
This was from early July so unless something else has change since we were under the impression it is still open for the moment (not sure what time you were there Stefan?)

I was there in July and spoke to Stony in August again I only knows Stonie's side so lets see, I hope it stays open.

@@AlloffroadAu Sounds like the clarity we are looking for isn't very clear at the moment, it's a stunning spot and on the whole I believe the 4WD community are respectful of the areas we go, so we don't see any rationale to shutting it down... fingers crossed and let's see. Hopefully it's not an issue with Stony as he makes the experience even better, a true character.

@@AlloffroadAu Thanks for the update Stefan, that's not good news, I'll pass this info onto the 4WD club and see if we can do any further lobbying to Wetlands & Wildlife, for what it's worth.

I just finished a 2 week 4wd trip through British Columbia's Chilcotin area. Stunning terrain, I was in awe at every corner. This is a world class 4wd trip, 400 km of unsealed roads, maybe half of that is slow windy challenging 4wd tracks. I wish I had brought a drone since the ground level photos and videos don't show the terrain well. What drone do you use? I'd love to lead one of you Aussie video guys on a trip like this over here, since I don't have the time or setup to do videos like this. I'll do my trip write-up soon.

sounds awesome I'm in, lol. Send me a link to your write up and pics when its done. I use a DJI Mavic Air 2 and a Dji Mavic Zoom as drones.

Speaking from experience, natural fibres like cotton and wool might not be as good in wicking away moisture compared to poly-prop material, but they (natural fibres) are better for keeping the smells away, hands down.

yea and I recon my Possum/Merion Pullover is warmer than any fleece I ever had, embers don't burn holes as easily around the campfire and I sure could not wear the same synthetic shirt for 12 days

      @THEROADSMITH Před 2 lety +1

I spent a lot of time 3 years worth of weekends hiking in the high country training to walk to Everest base camp dec 2020. And I found wool is the best for everything. Warmer. Somehow moves sweat from your body to the outside of the shirt etc. better on hot days because it will breathe . And you can use the same shirt etc for a week and every morning it’ll be dry and won’t smell. It’s the most expensive but worth it. Oh and fire retardant.

@@AlloffroadAu I used to wear polypro thermal shirts when I do multi-day hikes in winter. And there is no way I can wear the same shirt more than a full day before it starts smelling disgusting.🤢 I always changed my polypro thermals everyday as I could not stand the smell. But I've since switched back to wool. They might be heavier, but you don't have to carry as much as you can wear each a lot longer.

That creekbed would probably be full of water now... I saw on the news tonight Port Augusta got 21mm in 30 minutes so I am sure the Flinders also got a good drenching. Here in Adelaide right now, it's pissing down considerably and a bit of lightning also...
