Shinkansen's real disadvantage is that it was the first high speed railway to be built, and it was originally designed to run 200kmh. This means the more they raise the speed to over 300kmh like in China, the harder the train to maintain stability. Also, Shinkansen mostly runs through mountains and coast lines with the risk of earthquakes (compared to China that has a vast plateau). Japan will struggle to build new bullet trains.

I am an economist and if we are doing a cost benefit analysis by considering China as a “company” instead of looking at the perspective only from the rail way company (which is appropriate here since the rail way system is public or state owned), then you will need to take into account of the benefit/value of the time saved by all Chinese who take the high speed rail way system along with other national strategic benefits/values such as a line to Xinjiang (close to the border). In that case you will see the benefit is way over the cost for the company (which is China). This is the economic justification for building this expensive system. You guys pointed out very well that in the west because the rail way system is completely private, they would only consider their revenue as their benefit instead of including all the benefit received by the passengers. Thus from the private company’s point of view their cost is way higher than the benefit. So it is not only because China is looking at the value of the long term but also due to the above reason.

@Stanovich, you are 100% correct! Take healthcare for instance, the US’s healthcare costs nearly 2.5 times more than other nations from around the world but our healthcare is not as good as other developed countries. That is because the Republicans have privatized everything within their power to turn everything over to private companies. The problem with that is that private companies only think in terms of profits.
For them to provide goods and services they want to charge people as much money as they can get away with. This makes the costs of everything in the US very expensive. We are then hampered by the fact that these companies not only want to charge as much as possible, but they want to minimize the costs of doing things as much as possible as well. So the costs are at maximum level and the service is at the bare minimum! A double whammy effect!
Take the US prison system for example, since the Republicans have privatized prisons to private companies the abuses suffered by the prisoners have gone up because private companies have drastically cut the number of prison guards in their prisons. This allowed prisoners more opportunities to hurt each other and the guards have to do more and work harder and they are more likely to resort to violence themselves in order to control the prisoners.
The quality of the food have gone down, if that is possible, and there are less programs to educate the prisoners so that they would have some sort of skills to use once they get back to society. Worst of all is the fact that many prisoners are ending up serving many more years in prison than ever before because the private prisons want to keep them in prison for as long as possible since more people in prison equates to more money that they make from the government who are paying them to watch over the prisoners.
There are many stories of people who have gone into a private prison for minor drug charges and ended up serving many many years in prison because the private prisons were always looking for more charges to add onto their sentences so that they could keep them in prison for as long as possible.
Many of the victims of the private prison system are children. They got tossed into private prisons for teenage behavioral problems or caught with marijuanna possession and the private prisons added on charges against them while they were serving their time in a juvenile detention center to keep them locked up for as long as possible so that they could maximize profits. Some of them were sentenced for 1-3 years to a private juvenile detention center and ended up serving 7-8 years, first in a juvenile detention center and later to an adult prison system once they have reached the age of 18.
Private prisons have no incentives to let prisoners off their system. To them the longer a prisoner stays the more money they make! Every cell that is occupied by somebody is more profits to them! And this is the reason why turning over everything that is used to be owned and operated by the government to private companies (Like the Republicans are doing) doesn’t work! To private companies everything is about profits profits profits! But who wants to be a socialist like the Chinese, right?

The HS2 in the UK is said to take 40 years to build and cost billions of tax payers money. China offered to build it in less than 5 years and much cheaper as well, then some Tory member said we shouldn't be doing business with trannical regims and everyone agreed. So I don't think I'll ever see a high speed train in the UK anytime soon

Get on a faster train and you go faster. The US train is slowing down and behind the China One and even further away in the next 10 years. I am living in the UK for 20 years AND thought UK Politicians are cunning and always pragmatic but definitely not this time. but i think UK still BEAR A CHANCE to get off the wrong train and get on the right one before it was too late.

National interests should be always at first. However the chances are only preferable to the cleaver one.

@@dharmapratama.i9487 I think the scale is very important to reduce the cost. In the world, only China is building high-speed railways and making high-speed train in such a scale no other can match. The scale and demand also increase the motivation for improving technologies. For any other countries, China's high-speed railway system is the best choice.

@@dharmapratama.i9487 Unfortunately, some countries have problems in land acquisition. I believe Indonesia had the same problem, too, delaying the project by two years at the least. Setting aside the cost, Malaysia can't even decide whether to build one, you know, because it couldn't come to terms with Singapore.

What tyrannical regime ? China helped dozens of countries in Africa out of wilderness from being robbed by Western colonial powers. What did Britain and the rest of the West did when they went to China 100 years ago ? They robbed and raped China bare. Push opium to all the chinese and stole Hong Kong and Macao from China.

Love your videos. I actually been in the business class once. It was in the bullet train from Shenyang to Harbin north east of China.

Most of Chinese high speed trains can run 300kph, they are designed to operate at 350+ and can reach 400+ as maximum speed

Hi both, great good topic again! Just wanted to add that labour price is a big difference as well. I've read a about Ultra Speed Trains recently and it seems that in Europe it costs about 23 million euro/kilometre to build the railway only. I can only assume that labour price plays a big role in it. Keep it up!

China has its own geography, harsh weather and demands compared to other countries. The technology has to change and evolve to suit the conditions and demands in China. Great video!!
