I’m over 60 years old and still the lyrics, melody, emotion and orchestration move me to tears, as if hearing it for the first time...
Yeah. I am just under 60 and feel the same. Can you believe these two took this long to get around to it? They favor male artists like crazy, like all of them. Yep, all of them. Just look at their lists.
Same here!!! Simply beautiful! ❤
I am 60 and this was all through my young and teen age years.Linda is an incredible singer! I had a teen age crush on her and Stevie Nicks.I really love the Chuck Berry cover she did 'Living In The USA'. My home town,Chattanooga TN is in a verse in it.She has had so many hits! She really was burning through the 70's,hit after hit!
54, not 60
@@evanhughes1510 no I’m over 60 years old. Not the song.
"There are only two types of people in this world, those that love Linda Rondstadt and those who don't know her" - Willie Nelson
Oh Linda. We are all so sorry that an illness robbed you of your ability to share your incredible voice with us. But true fans will never let your music die! ✌
Sadly there is no cure for progressive supranuclear palsy, which is pretty rare.
I think she is to be commended for handling her situation with such grace! A role model for us all…
@@lorinichols9996 agree wholeheartedly!
This song is remarkably beautiful. You can actually feel the pain in Ronstadt's voice. Love it!!
This song brings me back! What a voice.
I have her tied with Ann Wilson as the goats. They don’t just sing a song, they emote it.
Every male, no matter their preference, was head over heels for this beautiful woman with the angel’s voice.
If you've ever loved someone who didn't love you back, this song says it all.
yes. This is absolutely the best song of all time about unrequited love. So sad!
@@tluddenToo Bad they both either missed the meaning of the song or decided to ignore it, I get it, her voice is amazing, and I feel she did she great songs after this but never topped this song. This is by far her best!
Thank you for your excellent observation. I concur that in this first time hearing for them, they seemed to definitely miss or decided to not highlight the meaning of unrequited love, which is a rarity for my favorite "first time hearing couple".
Nonetheless, as much as I adore the creative work of Linda Ronstadt, and as much as I adore the emotion of this particular song, portions of these lyrics in my opinion do not make the overall theme of the song immediately obvious (that being that the singer is singing about an unrequited love that she is experiencing, rather than singing about unrequited love in a general sense) such that multiple hearings are often necessary to reach that level of understanding.
Additionally, her songs exude excellence on so many different levels that it is difficult to "take it all in" when hearing the song for the first time.
Once again, thank you for your observation, and for reading through my gibberish in its entirety.
@@johnjaremko31 I think the best way to describe this is, it would not be played at a Wedding, but it is one of the best songs ever made!!!
It's nice to see people listening to the words. This is absolutely the best song about some poor guy consigned to the friend zone. That's right, this song was written by a guy, Gary White. Kudos to Linda for realizing it works both ways and selling the song as only she can, but it's interesting to think about the song in it's original context.
The most recent interview I saw with Linda was sort of painful to watch because of her Parkinson's. Inside her mind she can still hit every note but, her muscle control is not there so she said she never sings at all any more. So for someone that singing out loud was her whole life it must be painful to not be able to do what your mind says you want to do. She is a national treasure and so glad she is in the Kennedy Honors which I think means more than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Every time I hear this for some reason I picture her barefoot singing on the Glenn Campbell show.
This is one of the most heart-wrenching songs I have ever heard. The absolute torturous pain of unrequited love is just so palpable in her voice, you just hear every ounce of pain and grief. And that voice... just incredible.
The really strange thing: she was all known as a the one who got away. She's dated Jerry Bromn, Jim Carrey and was even engaged to George Lucas for a while.
She always had trouble finding someone..”"... he's real kind but isn't inspired musically and then you meet somebody else that's just so inspired musically that he just takes your breath away but he's such a moron, such a maniac that you can't get along with him. And then after that it's the problem of finding someone that can stand you!"”
I don't know which was more beautiful - her or her voice. What an incredible talent. People today CANNOT sing like that anymore.
Linda won probably every female vocalist award that could ever be won back in the 70s.
This Ronstadt just sings better than everyone else. She could sing it all and so she did. Pure, powerful and tender. We always believed her sorrow.
I was lucky enough to be a tween in the era of Linda Ronstadt and Olivia Newton John. How lucky am I?
This is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs ever. Linda sings with such emotion she’s always captivating.
This song was used in an episode of The Last of Us. Was used beautifully in the episode and so glad more people were maybe introduced to Linda Ronstadt!
That was my first exposure to that song. So beautiful!
She sings it a little bit better than Ron Swanson. Although his wasn’t too bad
The show sucks, the games, especially part 2 where Joel dies in the beginning is better.
@@dabearcub why don't you change your screen name to Spoiler McEverythingSucks? The second game, by the way SUCKS and if you think THAT was better than the ultimate sacrifice of love the first game is about than you're not fit to even leave comments throwing shade at ANYONE if that's YOUR opinion. EVERYONE thinks the first game is better.
@@carriesmith742 Joel was a meh character to begin with…Lee from Walking Dead was much more interesting. TLOU2 is a complex and thought provoking story, far superior to the original. Hope you feel better!
Her voice is her own and doesn't sound like any other artist.she definitely uses her vocal training perfectly
Every singer after her wanted to sing like her. Some can sing like her, just not as good.
Thinking about vocal training, she starred on Broadway in the show Pirates of Pinzanz . You really need to listen to her in that setting to appreciate how unique and strong her voice is.
I don’t think she has much vocal training. From the time she started her career in the late 60s, she said it took her 10 years to become good at singing.
I think this is Linda's best vocal performance
Have they done
*"Desperado"*
That's my favorite Linda song. 😊
She can really sing but her ability to deliver and make you feel emotion is what really sets her apart. Incredible talent.
Good point
Her voice……. Her voice……..Her voice………that’s all that needs to be said
I have loved this song for more decades than I care to consider. She's one of the best ever.
You mean for a long, long time? :)
Right? And some songs and artists simply stand the test of time much better than others. Linda will be making kids sob for the eternity of our race.
@@kev7161 Haha, that's clever!
@@kev7161
Nice😊
Song about heart ache and lost love...who hasn't experienced that once in their lives? If you haven't, you haven't lived! 🥰
This woman didn't just sing; she projected the voice of an ANGEL.
Others have probably said this…Linda was the Patsy Cline of her era!!! 🎵🎵🎵
Well said!!
I love Patsy, but she doesn't approach the versatility of Linda. I can't imagine Patsy performing operettas on Broadway. :) Linda is one of a kind.
Patsy could have done it....she never got the chance😢
You really think Patsy could perform as a Gilbert and Sullivan coloratura or as the soprano lead lead in a Puccini Opera? Based on what? :) I'm not sure that would have been possible. Impossible to prove of course, but the extraordinary claim requires the evidence. What song of hers suggests in anyway that would have been possible? I'm pro-Patsy, one of the best ever, but Linda is so much more than "the Patsy of her era". She should be recognized for her insane versatility and the singular talent she was. @@Quasar1953
I love Linda but had forgotten this song from her catalog. Then the HBO series The Last of Us debuted early 2023 and this song was featured in episode 3. A heartfelt song made all the more bittersweet for its being featured so prominently in this emotional episode.
I am a huge Linda Ronstadt fan . . . I attended one of her famous 1977 Universal Amphitheater LA Performances. She was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance for this song in 1971. She is, to me, the most versatile female vocalist of all time.
Ironically, she now says that she couldn't listen to this recording for a long time: "I never liked my performance on the record," she explained. "It was recorded at 10 in the morning, somewhat early for a singer, and we used the live vocal."
To me, it is perfection. 💖🙏
Saw her open for Neil Young March 1973 Seattle Center. 😊
@@SpuzzyLargo Now you're just showing off 😊
Linda is/was a notorious perfectionist. I am thankful she was.
This song was used recently to BEAUTIFUL effect in HBO’s -The Last Of Us
Shattering, devastating.
This song is achingly beautiful.
"Living in the memory of a love that never was." Never heard unrequited love described so perfectly. Beautiful song, beautiful performance.
Her voice brings tears to my eyes. So beautiful.
the title and song of The Last Of Us episode 3....a truly stunning episode of TV !! worth watching just the 1 episode if you watch no other TV this year!!
The sequel game is far superior.
When you said she can sing anything, that was an understatement, she has won multiple Grammys in more genres of music than any other performer. Country, Rock, Mexican-American, Tropical Latin, Children's Recording and Pop. She's been nominated in even more genres including Traditional Folk. Check out her 2021 documentary, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice. She picked up her 12th Grammy for it. Thanks for sharing and reacting to one of the greatest singers to emerge from the 20th century.
Don't forget when she took on comic opera, and killed it!
Nominated for Grammies in 9 different genres, 5 of which she took home. There is no other artist who comes close.
Iconic Linda. Originally released when she was with Stone Poneys. You are correct. One of the greatest female singers of all time. This woman could sing the phone book and make it sound incredible. There are times when I truly feel bad for you that you missed this incredible era in music
This was after the Stone Poneys broke up. This was from her solo country album "Silk Purse."
Greatest singer of all time, in my opinion.
Yes I agree the 2 greatest female singers of all time Linda and Karen carpenter
"I can't say your hurt me when you never let me near. And I never drew one response from you." AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH! Her voice with THESE LYRICS is just heart-rending. Magnificent singing!
I lived this in 1980, unrequited love
This much heart and passion in the singing and lyrics just doesn’t exist today
It sure doesn't.
That's because they are all autotuned.
Yes, it does. You just have to find it. But some people just prefer to live in the past and don't even try. I don't really buy into the 'you might like' algorithms, but people could just start by checking out the 'Influences' and 'Inspired By' offerings from music services, without much effort. There's a lot of great stuff out there.
this is the song tht made me realize i was in a non-relationship that was going nowhere, with a woman who was never going to love me like i loved her.
I know that feeling,no way not to get hurt. Just looking at her hurt
This is probably my favorite of all her songs. The simplicity of the music and the power and soulfulness of her voice is just so amazing. I was 20 (now 74) when this was released, and I don't seem to ever get tired of hearing this song
Linda was one of my wife's favorite singers, and this was one of her favorite songs. She died a few years ago, and it's really hard for me to listen to her, especially this song
Linda is very much alive although she can no longer sing due to a version of Parkinson's.
@grace I believe Grumpy meant that his wife had died.
sorry, my bad.@@jeffmattson5766
Best female singer of all time period!
Linda was sooo special. Another person you should listen to too is Emmy Lou Harris.
God, I love Linda! This is one of my favorite songs by her. Thanks, guys.
Yep, I can't hold a tune in a bucket, but I can do a mean lipsink to this song, I've heard it so many times.
@@sundayze 😂.
If you think you've been blown away by Linda, try 'Down So Low", another level of Linda Ronstadt
No, thankfully; people weren't as preoccupied with 'genre' back then. That's something the record companies & radio programmers obsessively worried about. ❤U Guys🥰
She is the ultimate GOAT
Linda has long been my favorite female voice. It's obvious why. In the early 90s I saw her appear with Emmylou Harris at a local small town fairground. They were marvelous.
The look on your faces as you closed your eyes and swayed to this song was exactly what I used to do as a 16 yr old back in 1976. Sighhhh.
Blessings ❤
I saw Linda Ronstadt perform many years ago at the peak of her popularity. What struck me the most was how pure and strong her vocals were. There wasn't a false note in any of the songs she performed that night. I've seen many shows in my life. Her show was probably was among the most memorable. It's a shame she's not performing any longer. But her catalog is filled with great songs like this one.
One of the best songs ever sung by ANYONE, EVER......Linda is THE BEST
That voice delivering those heartbreaking lyrics packs one big emotional punch.
Many years ago, a member of Linda's backup band approached her to tell her they wanted to go out on their own as a band, and were worried she would be mad, as it takes time and money to assemble a good backup band.
She told them to go with her blessing. So The Eagles were born.
She was finally inducted into the R&RHoF not too long ago, and the same fellow made the induction speech. He was really pi$$ed off, as he had been a member for many years, and if she had been inducted when she should have been, she could have accepted the prize herself, and sang some of her songs as well. He accepted for her, and he and the ladies of rock and roll royalty sang her songs for her. They each had a story to tell. Stevie Nicks said, "I first heard her when I was in 10th grade, and I said, I want to do THAT."
I read an interview on Linda's opinion of her performance of this song, and incredibly - “I can remember the day I recorded ‘Long, Long Time.’ It was 10:30 in the morning, but I was really into this kind of achy feeling, because the music - it’s in these chords. I think my phrasing was horrible,” she said. “I think I kind of butchered it..." We disagree, Linda, wholeheartedly 💜
Ronstadt is the best
Linda had that unique "cry" in her voice when the song needed it, and it was on perfect display in this song. She's still one of my favorite female singers, EVER!
Though she didn’t write much, one her many qualities was being able to pick songs out to do and put her voice to it and make it a hit. I consider her the greatest voice.
Love her cover of Silver Thread and Golden Needles
I'm not afraid to admit this song brings a tear to my eyes every time I hear it. Simply beautiful.
Linda Ronstadt is my all-time favorite female recording artist
And sexiest
Well, Linda, Doris Day and Diana Ross.
The voice of a generation! In my opinion, no one did It better than Linda. I first heard her in concert right before "Heart Like A Wheel" was released. A tiny cabaret club in Philly. She was spectacular! Many concerts over the years,+ I was never disappointed. Thank you Linda, for all the joy.and thanks to you guys for picking one of her best!
The girl with a tear in her voice. Such a beautiful recording--now time to try some of her American Songbook albums--What's New, Lush Life, etc.
Check out if you haven't already "It's so easy, "It doesn't matter anymore" "Someone to lay down beside me" and "Get closer." She is a legend and can literally sing anything. I saw her in concert in the late 70s and she sounds great live. She has earned 11 Grammy awards. Thanks for reacting to this!
a Latina from Tucson Arizona. She grew up with "Mariachi" music and rock. Just like I did in LA. But no one compares to her. Thanks, you guys.
Linda does an amazing cover of “Willin”, by Little Feat. It’s so, so good! Please check it out!
Oh yeah! I had forgotten about that song! I loved that!!!
Great selection. The most versatile singer of all time. For rock Linda I would suggest Heat Wave.
the controlled breaks in her voice convey such emotion to bring you to tears absolute vocal perfection, what a treasure she is.
The greatest most versatile female vocalist of her generation.
This performance won Linda her first Grammy nomination. It is from her 1970 Silk Purse album.
The great 70s right here
It's so wonderful to see young people love Linda as much as I have since the first time I heard her in the early 70's, And still do.
The yodel or yelp you hear in her voice is based on the mariachi style of singing she heard while growing up.
I think she is one of the best singers ever, certainly one of the most versatile. You believe every note she sings.
This is how you sing, not the fake singers today
One of her best songs. If you'd like to hear her go full country check out Silver Thread And Golden Needles
Yes! I love Silver Threads and Golden Needles!!! ❤
I hope you continue to visit her from time to time. The well is deep.
Her rendition of Karla Bonoff's masterpiece "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me" is absolutely her best work. Watch it live and you can see her become part of the song! (It has Andrew Gold on piano)
She just has a remarkable singing voice. Love every song she’s every made.
Her earliest music is country. Try silver Threads and Golden Needles, I Never Will Marry, or Desperado. You can never get enough Linda!
I love the Eagles but Desperado belongs to Linda!
I really want to hear them do desperado studio version!
While both The Eagles version and Linda’s version are great, I think Linda made it her own and may now own it as much as The Eagles do.
@@RabbiSteve the eagles didn’t have any success with that song after they first recorded it. It only became successful after Linda recorded her version and made it a hit, which helped the Eagles on the road to their subsequent success
I love singing along to Silver Threads and Golden Needles, definitely one of my favorites of hers!
You're really missing out if you don't play her cover of Lowell George's. Willin'. Live,1976 with the Eagles as her band. Indescribable ! Cong
Thank you for playing another masterpiece by Linda! There probably will never be a voice like this ever!
I love her song "Easy For You To Say" a real Gem and Linda does the subject matter far better than any artist has. Give it a listen and hear her at the peak of her career. Forgotten song that needs new light as a wonderful haunting song by her. It is off her 1982 Get Closer album. It is actually a great album.
The melody, the violin, The Voice! All of it! I bought my eyes out every time I hear it
Linda is a global talent, lots of great songs
Yes, they did try to pin her down to a particular genre but that's like trying to catch the wind. Some people just can't be categorized. Linda is her own category. Love those T-shirts, by the way. 😊
Linda truly used her voice as her instrument, carefully crafting each note… to paraphrase Willie Nelson: There are 2 types of people in the world - those who love Linda Ronstadt, and those who never heard her sing…
Try listening 👂 to Linda sing “ Silver Threadsand Golden Needles”
She captures beautifully the heartache of unrequited love. It’s a musical master class!
If you want to complete your ‘Linda’ journey, you must listen to “Poor wandering one “ from the Light Opera “Pirates of Penzance” that Linda starred in in 1981 on Broadway and film. It’s a bit long but well worth it!
This is one of her best songs. What I love is that it’s such a simple arrangement that highlights her voice and even the rich and lush strings are never allowed to overpower her style mole and strong and beautiful voice. The instruments only complement her lovely lilty and bluesy voice. You are right, she can do gritty rock or bluesy and soulful or jazz and crooning. Her two Nelson Riddle albums are proof. She was a student of music and she learned every genre she could and mastered them all. She is a unique treasure
One of the best singer/song writers ever. THIS is one of my all-time favorites by her. That voice is perfection!
She didn't write this, but I agree about one of the best singers.
Mine too ❤
actually written by a guy who mostly just wrote songs. this one no doubt made him a LOT of money off this one. but how lucky was he that the beautiful LINDA recorded this amazing song.
Linda is famous as one of the great interpreters of songs that people have written. As a life long fan, (my first Linda Ronstadt album was purchased in 1970), one thing she could not be described as is a songwriter. Interpreter yes, writer no.
A Classic Song. A beautiful voice and a beautiful woman. 😍
Back in 2006 or so; there was this show called "Haunted" with Matthew Fox; he was a detective who could communicate with spirits. Sometimes, the spirits would give him an affliction that they had or a feeling; so that he could understand what they were trying to say. In one episode he was hired to find a runaway teen girl - but she had been murdered and her spirit would sing this song to him when she'd pop up. Sometimes, his stereo would come on out of the blue and Linda's voice would come on and give this haunting enigmatic version. By the end of the episode, we learn that the girl loved this song, because her mother would sing it for her; at the time of her death her musician boyfriend was singing it. I won't give the ending away, but it was one of the best episodes of ghostly television. That show was creepy and 'haunting'; EVERY SINGLE TIME I hear this beautiful song by the beautiful Linda, I cannot help but think of that teenage runaway ghost who was just trying to give a message to her parents.
Love Is A Rose 🌹 is another famous song of hers that would’ve been appropriate for today, it was written by Neil Young
Jay and Amber, please do a movie reaction to the 2019 Linda Ronstadt documentary “The Sound of My Voice”. You will love it
Linda could have sang the phone book and it would have been amazing! There was nothing she could not do with her voice!
I Love This Song "Long, Long Time", it's my Favorite Linda Ronstadt song... Absolutely God given Vocals... She's a Beautiful Angel ❤❤❤...
Speaking of The Stone Pony’s, That Was The Beginning Of
The Eagles,
Before They Grew Their Wings And Flew The Nest,
Which Linda
Basically Pushed Them Out , Encouraged,
And Backed Them
I think my favorite Linda Ronstadt song. Such emotion.
Wow! This song and A Different Drum are my favorites. These early recordings are some of Linda’s best.
I saw her later in her career, in the 90s, when she was singing her Latin favorites. As a teenager in the 70s, I couldn't believe that such a beautiful woman could sing that well. Usually, God gives you one special gift, he gave her a double portion.
This song is one of the 5 hardest songs ever to cover properly. LR was an absolute BEAST! I mean quite possibly the best female singer of ALL!! Her range was so incredible and she could sing a ballad or she could sing Latin music, she was truly a Dinamo! If I had to list my top three female voices of ALL time it is Linda Rondstadt, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner in no particular order. Now, some people will tell you that Barbara Streisand should be in there as well as Whitney Houston, Stevie Nicks and Adele, but that's what the top ten is for.
The woman is a virtuoso of magnificence beyond compare...her voice range seems boundless.
Many of us, after getting our hearts broken, have put on this song, gotten drunk, and bawled our eyes out. It's a tear jerker for sure.
So beautiful and so heartbreaking
Linda's genius was her ability to deep dive into the emotions behind the lyrics of any song. She didn't just sing it, she felt it, and you can hear it in her voice. That's what makes her the greatest female singer America has ever produced.
Amber, if you like her in a country mood, listen to "Silver Threads And Golden Needles".
Beautiful, talented and humble are words that come to mind when I think of Linda Ronstadt. The heartbreak and the yearning that she exudes while singing this song is palpable. I love the Swiss Army Knife comparison from Amber. Spot on.
always love me some Linda.
The 4 founding members of the Eagles, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon were recruited by Linda as band members in 1971. The chemistry between the band members was so undeniably special that Henley and Frey approached Ronstadt to tell her they were splitting off to form a new band of their own, leaving her to hire an entirely new group as they formed the Eagles. She later covered their song Desperado. Don Henley said it wasn't a hit for the Eagles until Linda recorded it.
When I was 15 in 1970 this song expressed my unrequited love for a boy perfectly. The lyric "I've done everything I know to try and make you mine" hit it on the nail. I sang along to this song whenever it played on the radio, trying to match her voice. She was my voice teacher. BTW her autobiography is fabulous. She writes a lot about singing.
