    Swans and Sonic Youth toured together and were very good friends early on. A few years ago Thurston Moore actually opened for Swans and then came on stage and hugged Michael Gira at the end. Two amazing bands with a really long history

    The first song Teenage Riot is actually about slacker guitar god J Mascis (from Dinosaur Jr) becoming president. The music video also references a lot of influences for the band.
    Nice video by the way. I'm a big Sonic Youth fan so i'd love you for you to check out more. I'd say Evol is my favorite album though.

  • @gulliver1755
    @gulliver1755 Před 10 měsíci +12

    Ok so, so glad you got around to this one. This is one of the albums that got me into like non-mainstream alternative and indie stuff when I was like 17. It's one of the landmark alternative albums of the 80s that kind of ushered in more mainstream acceptance of the sound that would eventually lead to the Nirvana explosion of 91/92(they toured together with Nirvana and another band that helped usher in the 90s sound Dinosaur Jr). i definitely think Goo is a good place to go after this one because it was them hitting a more mainstream sound even though, at the time, the "mainstream" sound was only just being created, so I guess, in a way, Goo is a pioneering record. It's also just got some killer tracks but I really wanted you to listen to this one first when they were at their most experimental yet satisfying moment of the 80s when they really broke through(at least on an indie level). Thank you for listening to this! I only have two more on my hit list that I want you to listen to although I will revise that list soon Im sure and someone else said it but Dinosaur Jr - You're living all over me is another important one in the creation of the "alternative" sound.

    Good to see the youth of today listening to the Sonic Youth and other bands from my own youth. I grew up with this, saw them in Glasgow in 1989 touring it. Then again in 1990 for the Goo tour. You're not sure what genre it belongs to and want to be put in that time period. I'm from that time period. That whole period from 1985 - to about 1991/2 was just so good for music. With no streaming services and very limited radio airplay (only really John Peel in the UK), the only way to hear this was buying it (You'd probably have to order it especially too). Or you would go around to a friend's house and play each others music. Sonic Youth were Sonic Youth, they didn't belong to a genre. You could argue they were a continuation of the New York No Wave scene, then you end up falling down the Glenn Branca rabbit hole.

    The title Eliminator Jr. is a reference to ZZ Top, and Kim‘s grunts during the riff are a take-off on Sharp Dressed Man. Hence the Z. The song itself is about a 1986 rape/murder in Central Park by the so-called „preppy killer“. Rich boy, poor boy, poor rich boy coming right through me.

    The title of “Hey Joni” is a play on the rock standard song “Hey Joe” (most famously recorded by The Jimi Hendrix Experience) but with Joni Mitchell’s name in there, I think the lyrics aren’t about her but it’s funny nonetheless. Bro Sonic youth is my favorite band ever hands down. They're considered grunge rock or noise rock, they're kinda famous for their distorted and detuned guitars, the ways they break from melodies and go into noisy sound scapes. They were friends with Kurt Cobain and Nirvana and the bands of the grunge scene in the early 90's🤟
    The band is sadly broken up 😭 but they have a vast discography and all the members have their own bands and projects that are worth checking out.
    Oh also I love your reactions brother, love the way you analyze the lyrics and break it down really well, good stuff 👍

From their metal period I like albums Mandylion (1995) and If_Then_Else (2000), and experimental How to Measure a Planet? (1998) is just awesome.
