4k and then 30 a month for the app plus the energy bills, I’ll wait for the boys in Shanghai to knock this off first
lmao gonna use this phrase at some point; thank you for either coining it or using it
But apparently, the energy bills are offset by raising the aircon settings.
The $2500 USD mattress also requiring a subscription to an app is the definition of bullshit....
A good night sleep has so many benefits...... honestly priceless
jeez, you sponsored by them? xD@@dabd8175
100% this
The app is also pure bullshit; no way an app can accurately track all that information - anyone whose done a sleep study would know that.
Yeah you paid for all the hardware and then you have to pay monthly just to be able to access the hardware you own and paid so much for is just a rip off
@@dabd8175 Yes, but there are 100 FREE things you can do to improve your sleep before forking out thousands from a scam mattress.
A scamtress if you will.
monthly subscription for a mattress cover is one of the maddest things I've heard in a long time
I need a comparison between this cover and sleeping on 2,500 dollar bills
I can comment on this, I slept on $2500 of coins…….it was terrible
I was lucky enough to receive one free. The first few days were amazing. It was really cold. Then that coldness started to dissipate. Then the unit started to make a noise. A loud noice. The company replaced the unit - but the noice persisted. Meaning it was probably an issue with the mattress cover. In the end I stopped. The app was free also, and now you need a subscription. When it worked it was beautiful. You'll also notice an increase in energy bills as these things aren't cheap to run for 8 plus hours a day.
Compared to an AC how´s the cost?
@@SprayNpreyT Dude, I think the AC would beat it out. That monthly cost + energy bills.
@@SprayNpreyTWAY less than AC. Even a window unit uses about 750 watts. The Pod 3 I have uses about 80 watts.
How you got it for free?

As an adopted person myself I can tell you; you will better understand yourself and better connect with people, having a child. It is the hardest and most rewarding thing ever. It will make you a better person. The days are long and the years are short. A heart felt congratulations to you.
‘The first blood relative I’ve ever seen’ … blew me away (very nearly shed a man tear).
Different circumstances but my children are my only relatives too. Congratulations. Enjoy every moment of it.
One suggestion … have a couple … you’ll like at least one of them that way 😂😂😂 (joking, being a dad is absolutely the best thing ever)
00:34 I think you said that back to Front. Women always want to be warmer, and men always want to be cooler.
My bad
And here I was thinking James just called me a beta male
Yeah I've never heard a complaint about being too warm, that complaint comes from me
So relieved to see @JamesSmithPT admit that it was a slip of the tongue and I'm not the beta I fear I am...
i was gonna say i was dating this girl who said the same thing she likes to be warm and i told her i like to keep the window open and freeze haha.
“Men often want to be warmer than women…” what wildebeests have you been with, mate?

I’ve gone from thinking ‘hmmm not sure I like this guy’ many years ago may I add.
To seeing you on podcasts, interviews on mainstream media in the UK and then this video right here…
Massively changed my opinion. Honest, funny and genuinely care about helping others.
Can tell you’ll absolutely smash being a dad out the park.
I have night sweats that constantly wake me up. I've had a water-cooled mattress topper (Ooler) and it's changed my life. It didn't cost £2500 but i'd pay £10k for the difference it's made to my life.
Facts. Same here man.
Thank you for sharing an alternative. Nice to know there are other options for mattress coolers. I don’t need nor do I want an app to track sleep stats, just looking for a temperature change without having to make the rest of the family freeze at night.
Ooler was the OG they used to sponsor the Mindpump podcast. I bought the single bed one first then after a couple of years I gave it to my daughter and i bought a kingsized one. Deffo recomend getting one the same size as your bed otherwise it can move around under the cover. @@Dust4Vomit
Why would you pay 10k when you can get one for 2.5k?
$2k for ooler cooler and 1yr warranty but you get manual on device control if the company dissolves/app breaks.
Just to be 100% clear; I used to be a sleep technician - there is NO WAY an app can get that much information on your sleep accurately, or even vaguely well.
In a sleep study, you are hooked up with 30 or more leads, many have direct contact with your skin, including about 10-20 on your scalp (that are pasted on with a highly conductive glue like substance AND tape). And EVEN THEN, it's not terribly easy to know what stage of sleep you are in by reading the brainwaves those 20 leads generate data with.
A fucking phone app, that is at best working on one or two sensors, that aren't even in contact with your scalp will be able to tell you, exactly, jack shit.
Snoring / breathing is so massively different from person to person, a microphone that MIGHT pick up breathing (would have to be an amazing mic, so definitely NOT a phone mic), would again, mean basically nothing. Snoring CAN mean apneas or hypopneas, but it also sometimes doesn't and is also in itself NOT an indicator of stages of sleep as brainwaves dictate that. There CAN be correlations, but it's not consistent.
Again, I really cannot overstate this, an app absolutely CANNOT track your sleep accurately, or even badly. I don't care who says otherwise, it's a total load of shit.
Most of those figures are based off one or two sensors at best and are the equivalent of 'guesswork based on averages of other people'.
But of course they are charging you a monthly fee FOR A FUCKING MATTRESS COVER, so they are going to tell you any BS you want to hear to convince you otherwise. It's so so easy to flub data that makes you think you are sleeping better than you are; it's simplistic social engineering to generate a very expensive placebo. This is like scamming 101.
If you pay this much, and keep paying this much for a mattress, it's stupid tax. i.e. you pay more for dumb things the dumber you are. This is a product for exceptionally stupid and gullible people; and rich evidently.
Edit: I'm not calling James stupid, I don't disagree that the cooling helps. He doesn't seem to know the thing about how temperature, the body and sleep works. For instance, your room should be about 16 degrees celcius, so reasonably cold. Your core body temperature needs to drop about 1-2 degrees C to trigger 'sleepiness', so having a warm shower before bed opens up your blood vessels, then going into a cold room/bed drops your temperature and helps trick your body easier into getting tired.
But the app is still a glorified temperature switch and nothing more. You are paying a monthly fee for an over complicated thermostat on an overpriced mattress toper.
It just sucks because you can see the app has convinced James more than anything else - and it's the most bullshit part of the whole product other than the price. He got scammed, and worse, he fell for it. I think this is one of your worst videos James, I wish you would have consulted experts that AREN'T AFFILIATED with the product to get a more objective take on this. There are a 1001 other things James could have done to improve his sleep, rather than spend thousands on this shit. One of those things could have been actual scientific research.
All because u don't understand something doesn't means it's not possible. Also a sleep tech here
@@dabd8175No no, that's the thing; I literally DO understand the thing - which is why I know it's BS.
I know the science, I did the work. It is NOT possible, not because I don't know how - but because it's physically impossible to transmit the tiny tiny tiny electrical signals given off by your brain through a non-conductive mattress (or an app no less) and not electrical wires with VERY good contact directly onto the scalp.
Just going to casually also remind you I know the mattress is no able to conduct because it contains water...and is connected to a power source. I'll let you connect the dots there.
I've applied the cables, straps and machines that monitor this stuff on hundreds of patients.
I've also done the same with CPAP machines. I've also had to repair both, which requires in-depth knowledge of how and why they work.
i'm VERY keenly aware of how this stuff works.
Just to be clear, incase you somehow forgot this (being that you claim to be a sleep technician); you would also know that part of the job requires reading multiple rows of brain waves to determine what stage of sleep someone is in (because AGAIN, it requires many leads and data points to accurately determine this - if it didn't, a more efficient means would be used by professional technicians, wouldn't they?), usually with reports every 20 minutes over a night shift. Which a human must do, not just because AI still can't, but because quality control measures require several stages of checks by external parties to ensure the results are accurate.
It has to be accurate, because this is a medical field; a persons sleep or lack there of DRASTICALLY effects their lives, usually severely so. Not just stress levels, but weight gain, overall cognitive ability, mood, energy levels, immune system effectiveness and life expectancy. Pretty much everything - you spend 1/3 of your life asleep, that impacts the waking 2/3 in multiple substantial ways.
And thus anyone doing this in a less than accurate and professional way would be literally putting people's lives at risk.
But again, if you were a tech, you would know this and also be speaking out against obvious fraudulent science like this mattress app.
If you were really a sleep tech that is.
Yeah but where’s your rebuttal?@@dabd8175
Well said, great to see such an informed opinion on the topic - thank you very much :)

I find it odd a 'fellow sleep tech' wouldn't be promoting alternatives like not having any caffeine within 8 hours of sleep (and no more than 2-3 cups a day), no heavy meals close to bed, no alcohol close to sleep, regular exercise, no smoking, weight loss, stress reducing exercises (like journaling before bed to empty the mind or meditating to reduce overall stress) and no light or noise in the room weren't strongly encouraged over spending several thousand dollars and a subscription fee for an over-engineered piece of fabric.
But again, if you were a tech, you would know this and also be speaking out against obvious fraudulent science like this mattress app.
If you were really a sleep tech that is.
Would be nice to also get a 3 months update or something like that
If anyone wants to try a far cheaper alternative first, i recommend linen sheets. Far better for temperature regulation than cotton or the unbreathable hell that is polyester. I used to wake up from sweats every night but since switching to linen i havent had that problem once.
Congratulations on your wonderful news. Having and raising a child is the hardest, but best experience ever. 🎉
Your review pushed me over the edge to get it and I LOVE IT. It has been an absolute game changer.
Let me tell you that your kid, in this day and age, is never gonna leave home! 😂
CON: from now on, you will never sleep well in another bed without an 8sleep 😅 I’ve been using it for 4 years now and I love it, but my sleep during holidays is much worse!
Hadn’t thought of this!!
Joe Wicks vid in the background ahahah
It has a cost of $2,500, you have to pay a subscription to use it/keep using it, there is no way the app can accurately track your sleep data like that, and the software/hardware will likely stop working if the company were to ever go out of business, which is a possibility because you'd have to be insane to buy this product. I'mma pass on this one.
Hey, just found your channel and was going back through some of your old videos. I love the way you do reviews. You aren’t paid off by the manufacturer to give a positive review. Respect because you could be making a lot of money that way. Instead, I subscribed because of your honesty. Keep up the good work.
41-year-old woman here.... hormones are a complex thing... the EightSleep has been game-changer for me. I didn't realise my body temperature was so complex until I got one of these. I don't realise how much I like it and how good it is until I sleep away from home and I am hot, then cold, then sweaty, then cold, then hot, then sweaty.....
I'm autopilot: -1, -2, 0, +2, and very low vibration alarm (+ eye mask + mouth tape + sunrise alarm clock)
Total dream!
It took a few weeks to get the settings right and find the right way to use it, (a few noise issues at the start too but customer support was very helpful to sort!) now wouldn't be without it.
I am impressed by your 47bpm and 87-101 HRV! wow.
Great video!
Congratulations on the baba!
Anything for the "bebe"
My exes have all complained that sleeping next to me was like sleeping next to a furnace. I'd love to have one of these, but I think forcing a subscription is asinine. Maybe I'll look at one of those under-sheet cold air blowers instead.
Bedjet. Worth it. No subscription. You buy a remote and you're set. Also roughly 6 times cheaper than this at $300-400 USD on sale.
You're entertaining informative and inspiring James thank you. But I can't agree with the recommendation of a 2,5k matress when we have our extremities that are little heat exchangers so if you need to cool down peak a cheeky extremity out of the duvet -- a foot, a hand maybe both hey -- and you'll get the required cooling. Having more devices that suck your mind out of your eye holes has its own downsides. And it looks like you would have gotten those great sleep scores anyway (good luck in July lol) proving that if you're already sleeping well this will make a minimum difference. And if you dont sleep well there are a pethora of free things you can try that should be tried before spending money.
Do wanna emphasize though: thank you for the great and entertaining video.
James. Love the honesty on the channel. Can you do a 1-3 minute one month or 3 month review stating your thoughts. This is the only honest video I’ve seen on the product but it does stretch the budget for sure!
Love your work :)
Good luck with the little one.
I was starting to wonder where you were mate. I always want more James Smith but I dont want worse James Smith. Great content as usual.
thank God for the first honest review Ive seen
The cost will linger, until the company goes under and the app will no longer work. On the upside you won't have to pay the $15 a month, on the downside you'll be left with a $2500 mattress protector.
Yes just what I want, my bed to use electricity
And water... together 😂
I don't mind my bed using electricity - (after all I LOVE my electric blanket - ) - but what alarms me is electricity AND water - water AND electricity - which ever way you consider it *sleeping* on that combo - nah mate, nah
@@juliaconnell you could even submerge electronics if you prepare it appropriately with something called conformal coating.
@@zednik8956well... ok... I totally believe you that this is true, and therefore safe - something tells me that this particular device (granted, of which I know nothing about) does NOT employ conformal coating
in a world where everyone is trying to sell me something, thank you James for being you, it’s refreshing to see how reluctant you are recommending this 😂
Paying a monthly subscription and both kidneys upfront to sleep is bonkers.
Great review btw.
You bought it so i dont have to but now i want too and cant 😂
Amazing tech. All I have to do now is wait for like 3 years until Xiaomi comes up with their own stuff at a third of the price, and definitely with a free app haha.
Here’s a question for you! How do you think using that nightly when you’re home will affect you when you travel? Would be interesting to see a follow up, say, after you spent a week away on holiday (not that you’ll be able to afford a holiday for years, between the baby costs, mattress purchase & subscriptions 😂) letting us know how your sleep was when you’re ‘deprived’ of the thermal regulation after becoming accustomed to having it.
Hey dude, the baby wont freeze in the temperature you sleep in.
Babies dont sleep naked so you can put some clothes on him/her.
In nordic countries babies sleep outside when it is actually freezing as in below zero.
Yeah I also did not get that part. Put a kettle in the bed. That's it.
Congratulations on the news all the best for June 🎉
Congrats on the Bub man. Super happy for you. You’ll get along and you’ll know exactly why you’re here…you won’t experience love like it, or frustration haha
Loved the video. The line "you want me to sleep down stairs on just a mattress." had me laughing. We loved the one we were gifted so much we bought one for the downstairs. So you might be out of $4,000 pretty soon ha.
Breaking down all the marketing that’s shoved down our throats. There’s so much to consume these days and almost everything is branded “the award winning best thing that ever lived, that will change your life forever.” So it’s nice to have someone help us with our consumerism and realise we don’t need stuff and things to solve our life.
wow - *congratulations* - shows me how behind I am in watching my favourite creators. awesome news - so happy for you & your partner. 🥳💛👶💛🥳
awww your dog's a Kelpie?! 😻we had a lovely lovely loving intelligent dog, Seamus, growing up - who was a Black Labrador/Kelpie cross - seen pics of them, but none 'in action' - yeah renowned for their intelligence, as are labs - he was such an awesome dog. love that yours is 'supervising' making the bed (& your missus should be impressed by your bed making skills, 'on ya mate 👍)
I would absolutely not recommend this to other people coz this is such a great idea that no way competition won't come out with better priced products in the future. Hopefully they don't follow suit and software block your mattress cover with a subscription.
right? i dont want all the frills and features, if i could just get one that can circulate the heat off me im pretty sure thatd be good enough
This also requiring a subscription! WTF. Love The Video James, Makes my day all the time
I would do it if it was cheaper. For now if it’s not summer I have an electric blanket turn off after an hour at a modest temp to promote sleep from a drop in body temp.
I like how your concern over not sleeping is what temperature the room will be 😂
Just watched your video on calling out podcasts too. Became a Dad a couple of years ago myself. It's definitely as shit as people make it out to be in the first few months but the scales shift as they get bigger and a bit more interactive. Tip for you: make a list of films you've been meaning to watch or books you've been meaning to read; you'll be suprised how many you'll get through with the constant 3am feeds and cuddling back to sleep. Best of luck to you pal!
Ugh, I hate that you love this. If it was a reasonable price and/or the app was free (AS IT SHOULD BE) then I'd actually buy it.
I really like the idea of this, but if not the overall cost is what puts me off, it's the subscription. I'm so sick and tired of having a god damn subscription for everything even down to a fucking door bell!
Bro tried to sneak in Neutonic...
Tl;dr - buy an 8 sleep
I have severe hayfever, and due to my hayfever, run extremely warm and for years (10yrs+) i was trying to thermal regulate with fans, air con etc.
I took the hit, bought the 8 sleep and have it on 13 degrees celcious all night until time for wake up where it warms up.
I went from 55-65 sleep scores (OURA ring, apple watch) and between 4-6 hrs to now, over 85+ consistently and over 7hrs+ sleep.
Been a life changer...
I love it when you be saving us coin!
Love it. Couldn’t agree more with all of this. It’s a nightmare travelling now.
Does it come with a lifetime warranty, especially if you have to pay a subscription? Sort of thing I can imagine going wrong after about 18 months and need a repair.
2 year warranty. They have two subscription models - expensive and very expensive. If you choose the very expensive one (and keep it) warranty is extended to 5 years (but you also end pay around 50% or more of the initial product price in subscription fee over the 5 years.
I have the 8sleep Pod 3 cover with the very expensive subscription. I love the cover but hate the subscription model.
I’m very happy with chilipad dock pro. It’s super cold!!!
Oh no, James is loving an app with numbers and graphs and bars 😂
you are SERIOUSLY going places. I discovered you not too long ago but I genuinely can't understand why it's taking you so long to be on top of views charts, the content is amazing. keep up the fantastic work and I'm excited to see such a genuinely good person see his future success.
what a video to comment this under. James thinks I'm a proper tosser!
What happened to rich roll. He sleeps or slept on his roof in a tent. Maybe he was AI generated
My 2 estonian hounds like to play around with everything I do as well. Making the bed turns into a circus. Good on ya mate :-)
Congrats on the baby 🎉
Congrats on the arrival of your child! Looking forward to parenting + fitness videos.
Bro you got the most energetic dog in the whole world. Get him some sheep stat.
thanks for this James, much appreciated. I have to admit I had never heard of a/this cooling mattress cover (seen ads for cooling BLANKETS, which is what I thought this was...). don't know what part of aussie you're in (assuming you're back in aussie) mate I struggle with the heat in Auckland (Aotearoa/New Zealand) - currently have 3 different fans going (one of them similar - cooling fan - add water). I might consider this one day - but the thought of water and electricity - sleeping on that combo, yeah not a fan of this concept. maybe next summer....
I had the Pod for 2 weeks and found it to be somewhat uncomfortable because I like a cold room, but this felt lke something was jsut making my skin cold. As I adjusted it throughout the 2 weeks to get it to a comfortable level, I ended up bringing it to nearly a neutral temperature, which was where my mattress was in the first place. Because of the price, that slight marginal change wasn't worth it to me, and I began to wonder if everything is just a gimmick. Seeing this video adds to my suspicion that maybe I need to give it another try down the road, one more time.
Hey, congrats on the near new arrival James. Dadhood is great, you get magic powers man... Seriously!
THANK YOU for calling all these jerks out - The internet is broken, and all these 'tech' companies need to shape up and be called out on these CRAP products that require subscriptions to work correctly. You will own nothing and be happy - hahaha
Your channel rocks; keep up calling these A-holes out.
Congratulations on baby news!
I’ve had one for a few years. Never had an issue. I like it. I’m not making a witty video about it though.
The idea that he finds being in a cold room and being warm under blankets mental is funny to me. I live in New England, and my best sleeps always come in the winter when I turn the heat down (just on enough so the pipes don't freeze) and break out the comforter.
Water and electricity. The exact two things I always wanted together while I'm sleeping...
Best review video ever! And your kelpie is the best.
That subtle Joe Wicks workout in the background 😆 - was that some underhand diss?
Honestly it sounds amazing but that prize tag and subscription are obviously made for people with above average income. I just looked it up and it's even more expensive in the EU. As good as it sounds I'm not going to pay a monthly fee for a mattress topper app.
Say farewell to those full nights of sleep once your baby arrives. Congratulations brother!
Falling asleep within 5 mins would be an absolute dream
Genuinely good for you mate 👍

Obviously Aussie land is different with different problems. In the UK my answer is Harrison mattresses. Cold side, warm side, natural and with no water pumping. And no subsrciption.
