This is the start of a new era for our channel! And we're very excited about it!
Ecuador will continue to be our home base and we still plan to apply for citizenship next year when we're eligible, but we're taking our brand of expat edutainment on the road for future videos.
We already have several trips planned to other countries! This will allow us to gather more boots-on-the-ground information and do better comparisons between the various popular expat destinations.
In this video, we visited the neighborhood of Colonia Americana in Guadalajara, Mexico. It was recently named the "Coolest Neighborhood in the World" by TimeOut: www.timeout.co...
We're not sure it's the "coolest" neighborhood, but it was really cool. It has lots of restaurants and nice housing options. There are several universities in the area so it has a young, energetic vibe.
We really enjoyed our time in Col Americana and plan to visit again!

I´ve lived in Guadalajara more that 40 years and still have my kids there. I lived in that neigbohood during my student years and had my arqchitect study. My doughter got married in that church. The main street has been known indistintibly as Lafallette and Chapultepec. You´re right, you´ve seen a VERY SMALL part of Guadalajara... tiny, if you consider the surroundings. I´m retired now, and living in a much smaller place but Guadalajara is a terrific place to live, one of the best, according to people that have been all arround the world. 8:20 Those dresses are used by teenagers for their "Quinceañera" celebrations, kind of your "Sweet 16s", not as popular these days as they used to be.

Excellent video! The vast majority of the things you both pointed out were positive attributes. But one thing that's a must-have for me is a park. Gardens, flowers, benches, a place too feel free to sit, enjoy the tranquility, read the paper, etc. etc. Wondering if you saw any parks but either didn't film, or maybe I missed it. Thanks again for what you do!

There are many benches to sit and read and a lot of vegetation that makes you feel calm and fresh. There are also many bookstores in the area. There is no large park as such, as it is in the very center of the city, but there are small gardens with benches and very welcoming trees.

Mexico is by far my favorite country in the world! I love the friendly people, great food, great music, good manners, and the variety of topography! I noticed there seems to be a lot of graffiti in your area though. That is unfortunate. I don’t mind the more official, artistic painting but I despise the gang type of symbols. I’ve always thought they are idiots who don’t know how to write with real letters, not that they need to be spray painting anything at all on someone else’s property. It’s a problem everywhere (not usually in good neighborhoods though).

Years ago in Costa Rica I was told el leñazo is slang for la cuenta (in some parts at least) and I just recently learned that la leña is firewood. So I guess it's kind of like chop the firewood. Anyways, funny to see that word again on the restaurant!
PS it's more like hit me with the firewood

    • @seulmartinez710

Leñazo really means a hit/ coup/ blow with a log. So it's a metaphorical way of saying hit me with the log. Cause it's a bad thing you don't want. It must be part of their humor.

I lived in GDL for 3 months (2 in Colonia Americana), it was my first Latin American city and I was constantly tripping 😂 After being in Latam for so long, now I only trip a couple times a week instead of a few times a day!
The best supermarket in GDL is City Market, but I think it's only 1 location at Plaza Patria. Fresko is their slightly less fancy sister chain, pretty decent and they have a few more locations. There are a few larger Sorianas or Walmart in a pinch but you may have to use Uber.

LLorona will be searching for her drowned children on "dia de los muertos" which will happen in a few days. November 1st and the 2nd. Ensure that you spend some time near La Catedral in centro. There will be many people dressed as Katrinas and their will be ladies telling you stories about their ancestors around "ofrendas". Ofrendas with photos and orange marigold flowers "cempasúchil" with candles and food to help them on their journey.
You might try eating at Piggy Back in colonia America as well as Hato Ramen.
There is an amazing mural near Expatorio "323 Calle Escorza"
Go to parque revolucion ( parque rojo es el apodo )
Be careful with your cell phone on the major streets. Even Libertad next to Expatorio. Motorcycles await people and then roll by and snatch your phone out of your hands. I let this happen to me last year when I let my guard down on Libertad at night. On smaller side streets this most likely will not happen. Down south in Tlaquepaque this happens often.

Expats have totally found this place. Its part of what we call the Expat triangle in GDL that includes Americana, Providencia, and Chapalita. The prices in the triangle are FAR higher than in nearby neighborhoods and the crime is worse. Just do some googling about the crime if you're thinking about visiting. Its not terrible but it is common.

This idea is i think from france possibly as far back as late eighteen hundreds, for the rich families. Now everyone does,.Even latin America is also starting to do it!!!
