I have a row of strawberries in a narrow 12” wide raised bed around my garden fence and a ring of strawberries around a few of my fruit trees. I highly recommend if you want strawberry fruit, to plant them in a row and space them out. If you give them room the individual plants will grow large and produce many berries. Keep some objects like bricks, sticks, large rocks around to prop up the fruit off of the soil when they start to develop. I had LOTS of rain this year right as my fruit was ripening and the only ones that didn’t turn to mush from the flash flooding and sitting on wet soil were the few that I happened to prop up with some bricks I had laying around. If you want strawberries as a ground cover, just plant them close together and let them send out all of their runners. They will grow together dense but the fruit will be small, not very numerous, and some will inevitably go undiscovered until they are past ripe.
