After taking all the comments on board, I've finally got the Raleigh Superb back up and running. It's took a bit of work but I love the result. As also suggested, I'll run the auction with a portion going to charity. Link down below.
Well worth the effort. You gave an old beauty a new life.
That's a labor of love
It turned out pretty well! They're tough these old bikes!
Nice job. An appearance by Torvi is always an added bonus too.
Another Beautiful Old Bicycle restored, Happy days indeed.
Beautiful Torvy the Cat.
Indeed it is!
Very nice restoration, a true classic. Thanks
This looks like a really great bike and a piece of history to boot. I've been wanting to build a winter bike with this type of chain guard and a three speed internal hub. This bike is definitely ahead of even today's bikes when it comes to a drivetrain that does not get affected by winter weather too much. Great job!
Go for it! Just get the tension and alignment right to save the rattles!
Nice work there
Thanks!
Love the work you did on this bicycle!!
Thank you!
Nice job with the restoration and the video. Thank you!
Suggestion: If you could blend in the audio from working on the bike, the tools and parts going together, behind the music, that would add a lot of atmosphere to the video
Suggestion noted. Thanks! (I tend to listen to music while I'm working, so I'll have to switch that to headphones instead)
Spent the morning working on a f moser rando I bought for 15 euros, no rust! then back in time to watch and enjoy the Torvi show. Love sundays, bon continu..
The Torvi show! Haha. Yes, it's turning in to that isn't it!
beautiful restoration to a working bike, Torvi is such a good foreman-woman!
Sure is!
Looks great! Nice job on the chainstays. I like the way your cat keeps an eye on things ;-)
She's always watching over me!
Lovely job, must do something like this soon
Go for it!
It looks amazing thank for the video
Just beautiful!
Thank you!
Very nice. Hope it sells quickly. Great video
Me too! It's gained a few bit of interest already.
Absolutely awesome work! 😍👍 Inspiring me to take on antother bike project myself..hmm🤔
Haha sorry about that!
lovely job
Thank you! 😊
VERY nice!!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video really interesting
Glad you enjoyed it

Hi! I own a gents bike a bit older than this, can you please help me with some book of instructions to assemble the chain case? Thx!
Superb!
🙂
You did a really nice job to that old guess you call it a rally Town bike or something but it looks cool enough patina but the new Brooks saddle new hand grips really Set It Off
The new owner loved it too. Hope she enjoys many years of riding out of it.
Fantastic job I love it. You are turning vintage bike restoration into an art form :) Every bike work shop should have a pussy cat too!
A shop cat or dog is always a winner!
I've restored some rusty parts but never have i had to resort to filing the rust away !!!
Well... the file was an initial pass was I was "investigating" how deep it was.
I came here by accidentally. Your's nice cat Torvi means a horn in finnish :). I have retro style Pashley Guv'nor with some modification; like chainwheel, cranks, wooden fenders. Mayby some day a real old bike.. hah.
Thank you. Wooden fenders always look very classy!
Great job someone's got to save them does torvi yell at you to pick up the pace😎
She yells at me to get back inside and give her some treats mainly.
Looks great nice job. I do like the tan grips and saddle. Just out of interest do you find it harder to sell ladies bikes iv had some really nice ones but they've took an age to sell. Took lots of good detailed pictures and a good write up too.
Always. I've heard people say they get great money for them but no, in my experience they're tough to sell and don't do well price wise.
really liked this resto.Have to get me some of those tweezers. What's the white grease you use MS?
It's just weldtite grease. I have pots of it.
This is amazing to watch ♥️♥️. I have found 1951 superbe e in Sri Lanka and all the components are intact. 😍 i would like to get the seat replaced while restorating it. Can any one help to get me the original "brooks". Thanks🙏🙏
Thanks! If you're looking for an original saddle, my go to is always eBay but you've always got to think a completely original one could fail fairly quickly depending on how it looks. Brooks still sell saddles that are similar too.
That's a work well done. Very good video btw. Bike look amazing - although rims are too shiny ( yes, I'm absolutely jealous as I can't make mine as shiny 🤣 )
Quick question though, what is the saddle you put on the bike? I'm looking for something like it but finding cheep and crappy eBay ones and definitely too expensive brooks ones. Nothing I would use and don't be afraid of it being stolen 😉
The rims are stainless! They're always that shiny!
The saddle was probably £20-£25 off ebay. New. Not entirely sure if it was leather or not though.
Once you've cleaned all the bike up do you put anything on the frame and bars to protect it from rusting again??
Also what do you use to clean your parts etc..
Thanks
Beautiful. I almost hate that that amazing chainring has to be covered though!
I know right! Good thing is though, they stay preserved!
Love your videos!
One question: what greases do you use? A white (lithium?) for the bearings and a brown for the threads.
I use a Weldtite grease for bearings and I just used normal copper grease on the threads here to stop anything seizing.
Hello, great vid. If I may ask, can I use the same type of grease for both bearings and threads? I am fairly new to bike maintenance and restoration. Thanks.
Nice work again mate! I’m thinking of doing the same with a 1959 Trent Tourist as I don’t want to lose what appear to be hand painted decals. Do you now rebuild 26 x 1 3/8 wheels as a service or just for your own bikes?
I'd honestly love to offer services but at the moment I can't. Everything is a bit "up in the air" at the moment here.
MonkeyShred No probs, if you do let me know, I’m not far away in the East Midlands.
👍
What is the cleaning solution you Are using to clean the parts ?
Lovely bicycle. Does it have a USB connection to charge the phone?
In 1946? A usb connection?
Can you tell me please how you removed the chain gaurd
Hi. What size bearings does this bike take for the bottom bracket, front hub and stem? Ive just gotten a 1952 Rugde Whitworth Sport which is pretty much identical to this bike
Sizes can vary so it's best to measure your own. BB is generally 1/4", Headset can be 5/32 or 1/8
Those grips are nice too.. Link?
Pretty old video now so I’m not sure the grips are still around but you could always search for cork grips
Hello Richard. Question; Have you ever heard of a RodBrake Raleigh with a full chaincase in a single speed configuration? I have one and one person thinks its from the 1955--1960 era. It has a white tail rear fender non-standard rear wheel attacment. No dropouts. The axle slides in from the rear of the chainstays. I don't know the model or date of manufacture. I was under the impression that Raleigh rod-braked bikes were either three or four speed machines using SturmyArcher hubs. This is a single speed geared bike. Any ideas or thoughts?
The white on the mudguard came from WW2 says I believe. Single speeds were the base option for most models with 3 speed etc being options.
@@MonkeyShred Thank you.
Hi.
Can you tell me which brake cable clamp nipples did you use?
I have considered making new soldered cables, but don't really trust my soldering. Most people seem to have ordinary cables and either use an upturned spoke nipple in the brake caliper recess hole, then a barrel type nipple; or they use a nipple which appears to have a recess milled into it. Yours appear to be that type.
I have just sent off for a pair from France from a company that advertise on Ebay.
Great restoration. Really pleased to see you using copper slip. I see so many mechanics complaining about seized parts, then they put those same parts back together without appropriate grease to make it easier for them (or another mechanic) to take them apart in the future.
Thanks.
I think you may have ordered from the same place I did! I believe mine came from France too.
@@MonkeyShred Great minds think alike, as they say. Thank you for your reply.
great bike, great video. Shame about the music; sounded like an "old school" tape recorder was losing power!
Sorry about that! I wasn't sure when I chose it either :S
It cannot get more british then that
How about a saddle bag with a flask of tea and some biscuits?
@@MonkeyShred Made by Brooks ?
Why keep parts of the bicycle rusted?
On the frame? Because it tells a story. Original paint keeps well.
Good on ya! Great job. Only thing I didn’t get on with was the background music, that wavering tempo drove me mad 🤪
Sorry about that!
Hi Richard, have you heard of anyone retapping a French thread to convert it into English? I read this article (in French) which basically says that against common sense it works if done very carefully. The guy gives all sorts of alternatives in other articles and it looks like he knows what he's talking about. I wonder what your thought are on this topic or if you know about or heard of anyone who has done it. Greetings from the Basque Country!
PD: the article: www.muzarde.com/convertir-boitier-de-pedalier-dun-vieux-cadre-de-velo/
why don't you go for a threadless bottom bracket,
Boîtier de pédalier réparation. 20 euros from ultimebike. Easy fix and cheaper I would think.
Who's Richard? I've never heard of retapping something from French to English before though, sorry.
Two dislikes? Some people hey?
You can't please everyone. I do like recieving feedback though so I know why people dislike builds or videos.
I think you need a new camera! :D
Why's that?
Like 10% of your videos is fiddling with camera settings and focus. Don't you want to be a little bit more efficient? I know I don't like be sitting here and waiting until you sort your camera out. I like your videos a lot, but sometimes it is frustrating to be waiting for juicy parts. Also you could plan your takes a little bit more, sometimes you get stuck in what to say, or you spend time to find what you wanted to show us. Please don't get offended, this is supposed to be a CC.
Nice work, but I agree with others: ditch the music. It's completely unnecessary, and detracts from the video.
Let's hear the sounds of the work being done.
Recent videos have had no music :)
Have you thought about linking up with someone in the capital to sell your bikes? Seems criminal you can’t shift them but I think a lot of the people with the money to spend on this sort of craftsmanship won’t know you or your bikes exist - most bike people like the project rather than the result and already have a full garage anyway 😅
True! I always see a lot of comments loving the bikes but that doesn't translate to sales. I do offer shipping on bikes and I do get a lot of interest from London tbh!
LOOKS LIKE THE CAT WANTS TO LAY CLAIM TO IT'S OWNERS RECENT MAIN FOCUS OF ATTENTION!
Oh no. She rules the roost. She’s the boss.
you gave him a clean one, a fixed one, but you have not restored it !!!
Oh not this comment again. There are lots of different levels of "restoration". This one is a "sympathetic restoration" as it says in the title. Many people, myself included, love the history of a frame like this and want to keep it. It wasn't in a rideable condition before...and now it is, thus, it has been restored AND kept alive.
By the way, how often do you clean a bike by rebuilding the wheels?
@@MonkeyShred I'm sorry you got angry. I like to call things for who they are. the video said that I would have attended a restoration, instead I have seen a cleaning. Simply...
I'm not angry Mauro. As I said before, a restoration can be on many levels. You kind of ignored my question though. How often do you clean your bikes by rebuilding the wheels?
