    We were featured on an episode of American Pickers several years ago, and I have to completely disagree with Nicki Swift. Our episode was not staged or rehersed, and was shot completely live in a single afternoon. There may have been one single retake of a tiny scene when my wife stumbled on an answer, but that was the only time that any correction occurred. We found both Mke & Frank to be professional and very easy to work with. They were genuinely interested in our collection of stuff, even though we were not anxious to sell much, and they made very fair and reasonable offers on everything that they were interested in. They NEVER "low-balled" us or insulted us with ridiculous offers and when we did agree to sell anything, they paid immediately and were extremely professional. We had a wonderful time with both of them, both on camera and off, and Mike was even kind enough to share some other leads with us on things that we were interested in. They have since called us several times for on-air opinions or evaluations of items in our field and we have always had a great relationship with them. We have never seen them attempt to take advantage of anyone, young or old, and we have a great deal of respect for both of them.

    I worked on an Extreme Home Makeover several years ago. Yeah we built a home in one week which was something to see but the jobsite was staged several weeks beforehand. The opening scene with the workers charging onto the jobsite took several takes and most of one morning. The "stars" would approach us while we worked and the film crew would momentarily have us stop so that the stars could be filmed as if doing our work. Even Ty had his own personal carpenter that did his special projects. Its all movie magic, fake but still fun. One highlight was meeting Randy Travis at the house and realizing he is only like 5ft tall lol.

    I wish The History Channel would have actual historical programming like they once did. More traditional world and American history shows seem only appropriate on what is suppose to be a channel called history. American Pickers and Pawn Stars, for example, are only a small slice of our past, yet these programs dominate the air waves. History enthusiasts like either factual historical presentations or historical fiction like The Vikings. The Roman Empire, native Americans, Egypt, the Middle Ages, Civil War, and other real historical events and people should be the focus of this channel.

      AGREED. (My response was) This production, of non original content I might add, shows the posting party to be incredibly naive and/or just plain low. Everybody screws up. Everybody. And there's nothing here. Did you think they were perfect, angelic beings? -This is a TV show. Did you think they just load up 4-7 items in the van and magically the van just empties for the next show in the next state? The show plainly shows they have areas scouted out prior to arrival. -And you're faulting them for having fans? As in, fans are not part of the show. It's not a game show you try-hard, no talent Brit. Without TV revenue, it's a severe waste of their time if they don't have a larger system. Employees coming in behind them for lesser picks, even making offers on lots. You're a piece of shit lower than the entirety of what you just presented.

    Obviously filming is a lot more involved than just following them around with a camera, and I've often wondered where they slept and bathed when on the road, so there would have to be extra vehicles involved. however, this is an entertainment show and the end result is a wonderful adventure into the past. When I watch it I feel almost as if I am out on the road with them discovering all the antique gems and rummaging through all the rubbish to find the good stuff. As far as the FEW bits of dirt that have been dug up about Frank, bless him, I think that they are pretty regular guys, and let's face it, who doesn't have a few skeletons in their closet? Everyone has a few skeletons in their closet, not nearly as scandalous of some of the people in Hollywood for sure, sounds to me like Fritz might’ve had a substance-abuse problem, or simply just made a mistake taking a Xanax after drinking a beer. Of course there’s more behind the scenes at the show, but what they’re trying to re create is the way things were before the show came on air. I never for a minute I thought it was just them two in a van, of course the camera crew and other people are going to be riding behind them in some other vehicles.

First thing is cleaning the crap out of the house and out buildings. They will be lucky to find anything of real value. Maybe 5% will bring some money. The money Frank and Mike offer them is usually the best offer they are going to get. Consignment shops charge 40% and auction houses up to 50%.

  • @2cleverbyhalf
    @2cleverbyhalf Před 6 lety +26

    I had my own collectibles shop online before the economy collapsed in 2008. I went to auctions, yard sales, flea markets, and estate sales. It isn't that hard to find things of value, particularly at auction when you can buy boxes of odds and ends for a couple of dollars each. It is harder than they make it look I suppose, but anyone that thinks that these guys do the actual leg work to find their treasures is high. What they do is a highly convoluted form of what I used to do, driving all over the country? Why when more stuff exists in cities.

      A couple weeks ago, I was given a rear-engine Snapper riding mower at an estate sale. After sticking $44 in it and servicing/sharpening it, I sold it to a guy who drove 80 miles (one way) who gave me my asking price of $350. Quite the tidy profit! Of course, I didn't include my cost of labor. I bought a President Jefferson CB radio with a 100 watt linear amplifier, mike, lock (w/key!) and a K40 antenna all for $20 at a garage sale! It's a damn $250 radio by itself! You wouldn't believe the deals I get on old US coins at estate sales! I usually pay about 1/3 less than Red Book value. I sold an 1870 Carson City-mint quarter I found metal detecting for $13,500. It was book valued at $17,000 at the time. It's now up to $20,000!

    i WATCHED THIS AND Nothing is shady at all. It means normal all American guys. I love them both and the show and my late father and I got alot of pleasure watching them in his final year with cancer. Awesome show, awesome guys, great Americans around the country. Yes some of it is staged but you can tell its mostly for good television not to cheat the public. So in closing this is not shady and they are normal American guys who are not perfect. But that's another thing that makes them great! Just no more drinking and driving as you put others at risk please! Keep the show going there is an endless supply of goods!

      sorry about your dad- that must have been tough. my mom died recently and I was lucky enough to spend her last few years with her. at the end of the day, you feel really thankful to have been that close to them when they really needed you. it really hit my older brothers (we're all in our 60's) harder when she passed, i got to really know and love her well. i had a real advantage. we used to like to watch 'pickers', too. my mom never speculated about the real mike and frank- she just wasn't a judgmental person and considered that to be idle thinking...

I wish I could be out there with them.

    I think we can all agree that we know there's some production setup behind it, but at least they're offering these old people company and money. Better than pawnstar where they offer 10% of its value. They offer to buy shit that most of these people didn't even know they had and for a good amount. No one would ever come by and buy a rusted can for 20 bucks.

      agreed we do get an education but being a dealer in collectibles for many years people have gotten smarter and they charge more for items like vintage signs, gas & oil memorabilia and anything seen on this show! Just go to a simple garage sale and you have to now arm wrestle the person or flip a coin to get a good deal on just an old license plate!

Pawn stars is just not enjoyable to watch and the people are just not interesting enough to watch. As someone who constantly looks out for estate sales, garage sales and community cleanings I get what it’s like to come upon a rare gem. I have a chest from the 1700’s that I picked up for pennies compared to what it’s worth and I even paid more for it than the original asking price.

    I can identify with the role, I was a professional picker for 23 yrs. Its much harder than portrayed in the show for sure. I also sold my picked items at shows, on the internet, and at flea markets. It was a fun job at the time, I started in 1992 and retired in 2016. There was a lot of cool stuff sitting around then. Now days its next to impossible to make a living doing this since the good stuff is so far and few between. I specialized in hunting and fishing collectibles, but dealt in a much broader spectrum as well, before the internet you had to rely on your knowledge of items totally. Knowledge is power. Or was before the internet came along. It was a fun and challenging job.
