I was inspired by your work and wrote this quick poem. It follows a similar theme, should anyone want to read. If I were to ask you how your day has been You might shrug a little, say it was fine And when you asked me back, you might have seen A similar response - I wouldn’t want to cross a line I’ll just say “medium”, “okay” or even “good” While inside, I feel my stomach churning, And I feel the need to repress - I feel like I should And all the while, my head is burning Because some days are harder than some And even though I keep my smile I just end up feeling numb Trying to push that extra mile To see what difference it will make To hope it has some affect upon Directions that things take This work has always just begun And always I push a little more Poking and trialling and wishing and praying To hope that the next day’s better than before And flinch when all their playing Turns to scuffles and shouting and fights You try to take the high road And you try to do what’s right And you carry that huge load Of weight upon your mind You did your best, that’s it But you’re struggling with the kind Of thoughts that make you think, what if? What if I hadn’t been there? Would someone else have stepped in When very few seem to care? When not a lot will then begin To feel like you’ve been here For so long you can’t remember When you’re tallying the years And thinking back to last December Because that’s when it all began Would you take it back? When they first asked if you can, Would you follow the same track? I can’t say for sure right now If I would answer yes or no, But as on and on I plow, There is one thing I know I’m glad that I was brought To this school and to these kids And I know I didn’t ought To say they taught me, but they did Because even though it’s hard some days And I press my forehead to the wall And I can’t find other ways Of getting through it all It’s worth it. Because just being In a place where they can learn I’m just happy seeing (It doesn’t matter what I earn) That they have a place to be. Where they can laugh and talk and dance What matters is, I see These kids have been given a chance.
I just stumbled upon this and I happen to be an English grad who now works in a specialist school for children with Emotional, Social and Behavioural Difficulties. Every kid in our school feels like a fuck-up for whatever reason, and every one of them has been rejected by mainstream schools. The reality is that they had a really shit start in life, they've been abused in some way, or that they have learning difficulties and no one is ever patient with them, or that they're currently between foster carers and don't know who to trust from one week to the next. These kids are the ones who need sticking up for. Thanks for being on our team, Mark.
Love it! heldback the tears: this week has been a blur, Dads a devil sir, and me the devil child. Just ask the other teachers, sir: they all say i am wild
Mark Grist is a genious in his own Right. He makes a decent poem about stuff thats in his own life. To only show the rest of us that we can not be owned by, This sense of annemosity that beholds us every night.
Your an awesome poet! I have only written a few poems and there kinda crap but I go on this website called Wattpad where u can do that kinda stuff. My Username on it is CodyDoodle, though I doubt your gonna look at it cause usually teachers and grownups don't have time for that kinda thing...
Wow!! I was an English major, been writing all my life. That just blew me away..tearing up a little. Yet so beautiful, so precise. Thank you!!
Cheers. More teachers need this attitude , especially in the U.S. Keep it coming Grist you're the man!

If I were to ask you how your day has been
You might shrug a little, say it was fine
And when you asked me back, you might have seen
A similar response - I wouldn’t want to cross a line
I’ll just say “medium”, “okay” or even “good”
While inside, I feel my stomach churning,
And I feel the need to repress - I feel like I should
And all the while, my head is burning
Because some days are harder than some
And even though I keep my smile
I just end up feeling numb
Trying to push that extra mile
To see what difference it will make
To hope it has some affect upon
Directions that things take
This work has always just begun
And always I push a little more
Poking and trialling and wishing and praying
To hope that the next day’s better than before
And flinch when all their playing
Turns to scuffles and shouting and fights
You try to take the high road
And you try to do what’s right
And you carry that huge load
Of weight upon your mind
You did your best, that’s it
But you’re struggling with the kind
Of thoughts that make you think, what if?
What if I hadn’t been there?
Would someone else have stepped in
When very few seem to care?
When not a lot will then begin

Of getting through it all

Awesome. Shared your videos with my parents, they have both been teaching for over 20 years now and they love your stuff. :)

Well, you had my like as soon as I've seen that Mansions of Madness in the background, but hell, this is strong stuff, Mark. Well done, my hat is off.
So powerful. You remind me a little of Taylor Mali's 'what teachers make'
