Oliver Queen in season 1 had more in common to the Green Arrow than season 4 Oliver. He did not needed Felicity to bring in the lighter comedy tone, she actually made him more moppy and melodramatic. He should have continued to be sarcastic in more occasions.

They cut the humor down as a whole which is a pity but that's a very drastic statement. It's not Felicity fault but the writers. He grew softer and into a hero bc multiple ppl believed in him, Diggle, Felicity, Thea etc- and even S1 was melodramatic/moppy let's not lie.

But when drama that has been done again and again between characters I no longer care about in a once promising, epic and ambitious show, then there is a problem. Just take the flash, first 2 seasons were great, he was learning his powers, learning what it means and takes to be a hero, and his resolve is finally challenged with his father's death. Now, we have half a season of pep talk where litteral multiversal forces were transformed into a family drama, and nothing really matters because any proggression made in the characters' relations will inevitabily be challenged for the most stupid reason in the next episode, so we have to watch them learn the same lesson again and again and again
