    I would add one more step. Film a few seconds of the monitor being OFF. By doing this, you can capture any reflections that appear on the monitor's screen. If the actor is close to the screen, you might want to shoot a take of the scene to capture the actors reflection on the screen with the monitor off. With this reflection layer, you can place this on top of your layer stack and blend it using Add or Screen. This will add even more "realism" to the shot.

      Thanks for sharing your tip! Not something I thought of when I filmed the scene.

      Or, could you just take the original footage, flip it horizontally and scale it into the monitor space, adjusting the opacity and blur to make it look like a reflection? Save shooting it twice?

    • @AllThingsFilm1
      @AllThingsFilm1 Před 5 lety

      @@allspark2013 Flipping the actor horizontally would only work if you're shooting the actor from the side with a little bit of the monitor screen showing. If you're shooting over the shoulder of the actor, a horizontal flip will not work. If the actor is in front of part of the monitor, it would be easier to use the actual reflection, with the monitor off, and then masking most of the reflection, avoiding the actor's head, and blending it on top. Since you're only using the reflection, the mask wouldn't have to be exact since you're only using part of the reflection for the effect.

    A few people are suggesting that you display the HUD graphics on the monitor while filming. That will work if you're using some generic HUD elements which aren't of any consequence to the scene. However, if you need something to appear on the display at a particular time, you will have to make the actors interact with it. If you have them touch the screen to activate something, and have 2-way interaction, you're getting to the point where you really would need to do it in post. Lastly, adding in post means you can decide later what appears on the screen - you can add something which might not have been created when the acting is being shot.

    Great tutorial, but i`d do it different. I would do the Sci-Fi VFX, render it and just play it on the monitor as a video.
    Cant get more natural than that

    Ive been looking for this tutorial for 3 days now.Im using the same HUD elements as you, but how do you make the HUD display before putting it on the laptop screen? I've doing it wrong I think, I've tracking my screen with Mocha pro and did a screen replacement first. Then took one HUD element at the time using the same mocha tracking data and uploaded with corner pin, the HUD looked like it was pasted plain and stretched out on the screen..
    Do you think you can help?

    • @renardvivek2239

      Meant to say, if graphics could play in the monitor directly on set during shoot, we could save lots of time... Post can happen before shoot
