  • I picked up this great base station at the Shelby HAM fest a while back and have just now had the chance to play with it.
President and later Uniden made these all the way up till around 2000. There is a reason for that. THEY ARE GREAT! These are some of the best radios made from that era. Easy to modify, great receive and transmit and nice to look at. This one has clearly had a life of hard use. It's well worn, but still working almost 30 years later.

That was also my first base station , bone stock in 1997 , I was living in Hull, Ga , the edge of Jackson County out in the country . I had a great Antron 99 with a ground plane kit , plus I ran radials in 3 directions with ground rods . I literally worked the US and Canada , on 20 watts of PEP on SSB with ease , what a beautiful era in radio I experienced in the late 90’s . Great radio , enjoy it !!

President needs to produce these again. I'd pay good money for a virgin president Washington over something like a galaxy 2547. I like the old school look. $5 you're a lucky dog. I had one for $100 and my job screwed me out of being able to seal the deal in time. I did manage to buy 2 cobra 25 nightwatchs an a 66 and 68 uniden for $40. So, $10 a piece ain't too shabby...

I just remembered I did not have a frequency counter built into that radio myself. What I did was I took a 1 foot piece of copper wire. Wrapped it around the coax close to the radio itself. Took the wires and some alligator clips and tied it to the two ends of the copper wire that is on the coax. It gave me an idea on what frequency I was on. it was a cheap frequency counter. but it had worked very well. The idea of this message is to make sure the copper braided wire is tightly to your coax coming out of the back of the radio. It wasn't a hundred percent accurate but it gave you an idea on where about you are on the frequencies. believe me it helped. You can get a frequency counter a cheap one at least $50 and up. It is good to have I use them quite often.

I had put it on a shelf and left it in the closet for years mine had extra channels in it with a variable watt knob on the back so I can run my tube linear. I still have the tube linear but the radio is long gone. They were an ass kicking radio and if you can find one that's a virgin oh my the world is your oyster. that's a steal what you got it for.

Hey Eric. I know this is an old video and I'm wondering if you're still hanging out here. Last week I found one of these at a garage sale and decided to buy it. After I got it home I noticed a couple switches on the front that didn't look factory. I've been doing some research to try to figure out how these things are supposed to work and was wondering of you found anymore information on yours that you could share. I've got the covers off and I see what they did...took some ohm readings and now I'm a bit confused. If you found anything on how this was supposed to be installed would be helpful too. Thanks!

I have my A-99 with grnd plane kit atop 2- chain link fence top rails secured where they go together with metal screws. I have a steel plate secured to my shack corner at about 8 ft that sticks out enough to use a "U" bolt to hold the mast to it. The mast is in the ground about 12 inches. It has stood through 3 hurricanes with no guy wires. Suprisingly enough, the sway was very little in a 100 mph hurricane. I have the same setup on another corner of the shack with a 2 meter beam antenna.

The antenna is an Antron 99 without the ground plane kit. 50 ft of coax. My radio is a Galaxy Saturn Turbo. I have also a d104 lollipop mic the midnight one. And a second midnight one would have 10d sideband head. The first Mike has the bottom key up pad and a sidebar the side band one just has the sidebar. I do pretty good with it and central New Jersey when I talk skip people hear me all over. very happy with my setup. it's a little makeshift and rigged especially when you use hose clamps but I do a okay.😁 pretty familiar with your radio I haven't seen one of them in years.

I've got a Washington (in the closet.) Their excellent transciver's! I've also got a heavily modified Madison. The Madison is my go to SSB rig. I'd say for $5 you scored! Even with the wear it looks like it cleaned up nicely. Looks like with all those extra channels you're going to need a frequency counter (as you mentioned.) There's at least one eBay seller that I know of who sells a frequency counter for the Washington. As opposed to an external one this counter gets mounted in the speaker grill, and actually looks very nice (when done right.) I believe it comes with a bezel. As far as price I'm not sure, but I paid $60 (if i recall) for the frequency counter that replaced the digital clock on my Madison. I think there's a few companies that sell a frequency counter kit for 27mhx. I would assume the kits fairly cheap taking into account you have to put it together. Once again nice purchase.👍 73

Check out tarheel roundtable radio group on facebook. I have said if Uniden came back out with the modern day Uniden Washington with a 6-digit frequency counter that was easily modifiable for extra channels or that would have extra channels in it with a band selector switch and then 30 watts of power on am or sideband, that radio would probably outsell the RCI 2995dx due to the fact that the 2995 DX is so overly priced at $700 before conversion and tune and modifications. yes ! ! let's make CB radio great again, it can be done. you do not need a counter if you have a hf receiver with ssb. zero beat a time and frequency station to get a idea if it is on frequency after a warm up. then transmit on dummy lode low power and use no antenna on hf receiver use a battery power on the receiver and CB to keep to much rf getting in to the receiver. i use a hf receiver that is with in 10hz of 20mhz time and frequency stranded and use it as a counter using a probe to loos cu-pal rf in to it to check oscillators. never had a problem with being off frequency. free band is a live and well if you have agitators and hi power cb operators it wipes out the standard 40ch. places that are mostly flat are bad as the harmonics can travel along way.

Cheers Eric. I got my Washington back from a service last week, after owning it for 2 years (original box & mic all in great nick) and I'll be using it this skip season. It has normal FCC band and added high band on NB/ANL switch & 10kc shift on ch9 button. Sounds great. I have the Dwight .D too so only the Madison to collect for the set. czcams.com/video/TY3Z-6hGkt4/video.html

Hey dude are all your videos COPPA safe? No toys or cartoon stuff in the back grounds? Why I ask? Because the "haters" are rubbing their fat sweaty hands together as they drool when watching the COPPA count down clock.

It has been on my mind some, but looking at my stats. It appears that my under 18 viewership is less than 1%. Although I've always made my videos rated G, I can say that I'm 99.9% sure no one could mistake them for one that would lead to a COPPA violation.

well, I came here to find out what year the radio was, and I wound up clicking off because all I heard is filler filler filler. just talk about the radio, I don't care about your deals, I don't need to see pictures of other radios, just talk about the uniden Washington and make the video simple for people...

The average viewer comes for information. we don't have all the time in the world. If I see a seven and a half minute video, and a one and a half minute video, I'm likely to click on the one and a half minute video hoping it gives me the information I need. When I click on the 7 minute video, I do not expect to hear life stories. All I'm concerned about is the radio itself what does it offer, what are the pluses and minuses, and hopefully see a transmission and receive segment. That's what I expect as a viewer. I understand you like to talk mumbo jumbo, but it doesn't help the viewer much. Thank you.
