WHY were so many of our charter schools in old abandoned buildings??? Mine was also founded by a suspicious and very wealthy widow who was often scene in overalls gardening in the flower beds around campus.
Oh! And we used a YMCA for a “gym” and when I was in the 7th grade someone had the not so bright idea to put 7th and 8th grade varsity athletics in the gym at the same time as Junior and Senior High-school boys leading to multiple definitely illegal relationships and two early teenage pregnancies AND my mom pulling me out to put me into a different school because I was getting stalked by an 18 year old boy at 13… chaos.
They're in abandoned buildings, in old churches, in parts of buildings that are also used by other businesses. It's wild. I think it's to keep costs down
Good on your mom for protecting you! I hope you and the other children have recovered from that terrible experience and are safe and have good food to eat ! Do you know if the school *got closed down?
They’re often in sketchy buildings because charter schools are not legally able to get loans to buy/build a better school

HONESTLY Seeing my worms in the compost makes me so happy. Those are such happy worms, THRIVING and WRITHING in their happiest place. I love taking care of my worms

Fun fact: earthworms are not native to North America and are an invasive species that have done harm to the soil. Earthworms aren't actually needed for good soil, they just make composting go quicker.

They are like my little pets I love them. My thousands and thousands of little pets.
I go out in the rain (it doesn’t rain here often) or shortly thereafter and pick them up and put their silliness back in the bins or at least into a planter or the garden (if they seem to want a new home so badly) so they don’t come to harm.
My bins are over concrete not dirt so they could dry out and die without intervention or an excellent sense of direction :( ma bebes!!!

I went to a very prestigious charter school that turned out to just be a cult. It took me a few years to realize that the teachers were absolute bullies because I assumed it was normal.
I went to a charter school too…. We didn’t have a worm bucket, but there was a goat.

My charter school had a pond, bunnies and chickens. It was such a pretty green place full of fruits and plants, but I still suffered socially (as one does)
Everyone suffers socially in school, charter schools are actually far better from the studies.

At my charter school in the 1st grade they tried to be "different" by having us raise up mealworms into beatles instead of butterflies. It took awhile to get used to feeding my hedgehog live mealworms. 😅🦔

I also went to a charter school, and half of the building was under construction the entire time I was there.
I also go to a charter school for high school. Our piles don't have worms though. We do have chickens. But my last in person school had a whole small farm. This is the third highschool I've been to. It's still not cun but at least they have gender neutral bathrooms and teachers that call me by my name.

Only knowing someone by the name Doctor Worm reminds me of how long I only knew someone by the name Doctor All-Bright before I could remember his actual name. I'll always remember someone he was in a skit with saying "Turn around bright eyes." With a ton of anger in his voice, it was hilarious!
It's wild how different charter schools are. My neice & nephew go to one of the best ones that's more like a private school so hearing other experiences is fascinating.
I also went to a charter school with a worm compost but my teacher for 7/8 grade had the only one in the building😅 Also chickens, a fish tank, a little herb grower thing, and potted plants around the room😊 he'd been a teacher for 10+ years and that was the first year he had done anything like gardening and interactive stuff for the kids. idk what changed but it was welcomed. Definitely thankful that i was there during the trial and error of learning worm composting and gardening 😊

My high school charter school was an old Victorian building and all the bedrooms were converted into small classrooms, the art room was in the basement, our principal was in the attic, we had a giant garden in the back, and we had home economics in this huge kitchen. Kids were always every where. It was a very interesting and simply amazing experience.
That sounds amazing!! As a spooky kid, I would have LOVED that.
In the winter when the worms are alive I go outside to dig them up with my hands. It’s reminds me of when I was little, so I do it when ever I can.

Except the naughty students were made to look after the grass snakes (they are pretty much the size of a large worm)
Some of the naughty students stopped getting into trouble as much and just volunteered to look after the snakes during lunch or a hour after school
AS A PERSON WHO IS DEATHLY TERRIFIED OF WORMS. I THINK THAT WOULD MAKE THINGS WORSE.

I don't know why but that almost sounds wholesome both giving the kid the nickname doctor worm it seems like it's more affectionate than anything else and going to count the worms as a way to calm down and discipline your behavior not so much a punishment maybe that's why I think that because the horror stories I've heard about creative punishments outside of detention and extra homework that teachers and staff come up with have been horrendous so maybe that's again why I think this is kind of wholesome

I went to a charter school in Colorado (15 years ago lol...) and we didn't have worms but we did have prairie dogs in the school yards, and a neighbouring horse.
My charter school had rooms sponsored by a phone company. And they got rid of 75% of the library to expand the engineering class.

i didn't have a nickname in /highschool/, but if someone didn't know my name, i was always the kid covered in paint up to my elbows. "Hey, you! Uh- the guy covered in paint." *I turn and face the voice* "yeah?" "Damn, thats more paint than i thought." Im legally blind (not fully blind, but am very visually impaired), and a messy artist. Me and many kinds of paint dont mix well.

lol i get you with the charter school thing, my high school is a charter school and was an old cotton mill in the 1900s and either floods, the water gets shut off, or some other off the wall event happens quite regularly
I also went to a charter school. It was an abandoned church turned school by a bunch of teachers from Turkey. The ceilings were low, the school was dark, and the baptismal pool hidden behind a very obvious bookcase in a super spooky library was a great make-out spot. 😂 Also we had tea time. 💁♀️
We get a worm bin every year in the science room for the 7th grade life science unit. The teacher cared more about the worms that us I think.

I work retail and where I work we sell fishing worms - when I was a cashier and when I worked in the sporting goods department if someone bought the worms I would open them and shake the container a little, sometimes even poke around in the dirt until I saw a squirm.
It was my favorite thing ever because even the people that brought it and were going to buy it would get so shocked that I was opening it and checking it.

Yeah, in primary school we had a worm farm, it was one of those ones that have multiple layers and a tap at the bottom.

I had a similar experience, not with the worms, but with a “unique” high school experience. I attended a conservative homeschool co-op for my entire high school experience. The craziest thing that happened there was a “scandal,” if you could even call it that (there were no pregnancies or drugs or anything. I think some kids cussed their parents out online or smth.), that made a few people leave the school. And the school was so small that I ended up being the only person in my graduating class.
I went to charter schools in Texas 😅 after I finished at the AEP’s…..😂
