Actually cats purr most of the time because their heart is racing to much and their heart cant take it so they divert some of it to their vocal cords making them purr, it'll often happen in distressed cats or wounded ones. Though yes they will communicate through purring it is because their heart is racing as they adore all the petting, cuddles, etc and their feline heart can't absorb all of that and so they purr.
