In the late 90s my great uncle who was from Ireland I was close with sang this Everytime we visited he's been gone a long time and when I heard this I was almost in tears
Near Banbridge town, in the County Down One morning last July Down a bóithrín green came a sweet cailín And she smiled as she passed me by. Oh she looked so sweet from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut brown hair Such a whimsome elf, that I pinched myself For to see I was standing there. From the Bantry Bay to the Derry Quay And from Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the sweet cailín That I met in the County Down. As she onward sped while I scratched my head And I looked with a feeling rare And I said, says I, to a passer-by "Who's the maid with the nut-brown hair?" Well, he smiled at me, and he said, says he, "She's the gem of Ireland's crown. Young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann She's the star of the County Down." And from Bantry Bay to the Derry Quay And from Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the sweet cailín That I met in the County Down. Well, I've travelled a bit, but I never been hit Since my roving career began Got me fair and square, I surrendered there To the charm of Rosie McCann. With a heart to let and no tenant yet Did I meet and a row began But in she went and I asked no rent From the star of the County Down. From the Bantry Bay to the Derry Quay And from Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the sweet cailín That I met in the County Down.

"At the harvest fair, she'll be surely there, So I'll dress in my Sunday clothes, With my shoes shined bright, and my hair combed right, for a smile from the nut-brown rose. No pipe I'll smoke and no horse I'll yoke, Though my plough with the rust turn brown, Till a smiling bride, by my own fireside, Sits the Star of the County Down.
This song used to be one of the tavern songs I liked least (what was I thinking) and somehow its massively grown on me to the point its almost my favourite
THANK YOU! I have been playing this ditty on my guitar wishing I knew the words or at least the title! I've been going, "Nanana nana na nana nanana.." (etc.)
If you like this listen to the high kings and Loreen mckinnetts version. Then listen to everything by the wolfetones, the dubliners and Christy Moore. Maybe the odd Sinead O' Connor song.
The tune MIGHT have existed, but the lyrics were written by a man named Cathal McGarvey, who wasn't even born until 1866. Prior to him, the tune was associated with a child balled called "Dives and Lazarus."
As a kid, I was listening to this before sleeping, I didn't believe my ears when I heard it in a tavern in the game !
Lazerstory that was very nice to read :) good story
Seriously, that's cool.
This song reminds me of a beautiful girl named Colleen I used to know

AC4 did an astounding job with its soundtrack. I honestly can't find a better version than the one in the game and I'm a Celt.
I've listened to all the bands on youtube singing it and I have to agree this is by far the best. The gruffness in his voice makes this song
Orthodox Celts version is 🔥
@@AmberW28 I like your pfp!
I love The Irish Rovers version a lot. It's similar to this but it a little faster
I'm from County Down and was so surprised to hear this in Assassin's Creed!

I always confused a few words in the song but with the lyrics all of the song made sense
thanks for the lyrics
Literally the only man on the internet with "cailín" spelt correctly. As a native speaker with concern for my dying language, I thank you.
Thank you
Soundtrack of losing at 9 Men's Morris
I can't believe the best version of the song is from a video game

Nothing is true, everything is permitted.
Listen to the High Kings Version.
high kings start like they have been shooting up but they get great toward the end
This one's better, I think
Sean Dagher's version of this son is pretty good too ngl
I mean he's the lead vocal in most of this game's soundtrack so unsurprising his version of the song is good he had plenty of practice
i love it
Try the Wolfe tones if ye like this lads
Best Version!

Games that delve into history tend to take songs related to theme a bit more than time period.
I'm Am Edward Kenway The Pirate Assassin
Why does it sound different in the albums on Apple Music and Spotify?
Because Star of County Down is an old traditional Irish song, long before the black flag version was created
who listen in 2019?
R4gn4r0k HD me lol
Which version is this one?

2020 anyone?
