  • Discover the wonders of Lake Bogoria in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, a site celebrated for its vibrant flamingos, geothermal hot springs, and unique geysers. Spanning 34 square kilometres, this alkaline lake is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including rare fish species and over 200 bird species.
Lake Bogoria's unique ecosystem harbours valuable microorganisms from which enzymes are extracted for use in pharmaceuticals, textiles, and cleaning products. These enzymes have been crucial in developing antibiotics, eco-friendly detergents, and eco-friendly alternatives to harsh chemicals used in textile processing and leather production, highlighting the lake's significant commercial potential.
However, while these resources benefit the global biotech industry, the local Endorois community has historically received minimal financial benefits from these activities. Efforts are ongoing to ensure that the profits are shared more equitably with the local residents, in line with the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing.
