    as many have said here, Dance is _exactly_ how I pictured Lord Vetinari (save for the hair), but I want to draw attention to a specific bit of his performance: the way he says "don't let me detain you." TOTALLY nails the way it was described in the books - it's absolutely chilling

      The one thing that bothers me about Dance as Vetinari is that he looks a lot like how he was envisioned to look by Terry Pratchett and Paul Kidby minus the colour of his hair, Vetinari's being said to be black in the books; which could've been fixed in production. But apart from that, he looks and acts like he was made for the role.

  • @GuukanKitsune
    @GuukanKitsune Před 2 lety +12

    Charles Dance even managed to nail Vetinari's 'sense of humor'. That is... he doesn't usually show it, if it's showing, somebody is really in an awful lot of trouble. He managed to radiate menace and intimidation without ever directly acting threatening or raising his voice, and thus when he DOES raise his voice snappishly, it kind of makes the blood run cold.
    Truly the perfect actor for Vetinari. I am fine with some deviation from the established appearance so long as the character is portrayed right. And Charles Dance didn't portray Vetinari, Charles Dance BECAME Vetinari. His hair color bothered me zero from the moment he was on screen because he *WAS* Vetinari, through and through, from the way he moved to the expressions to the way he spoke. Not a 'version' of Vetinari, he became the character, stepped right off the page, and I freakin' APPLAUD him for it.

But, I guess, it is based on London, and by the time of Going Postal it is going through its own version of the Industrial Revolution, so maybe this was actually a more accurate depiction. Dance's assessment of Lord Vetinari is incorrect. Lord Vetinari didn't manipulate; his methods were far more subtle and refined. As Lipwig observed, Vetinari doesn't pull your strings, he lets you pull your own strings. The entire reason Vetinari chose Lipwig to run the post office was because he could see Lipwig's character was well suited to performing the task required. During Lipwig's tenure as the Post Master, Vetinari never told Lipwig what to do. Lipwig came up with all his own ideas and implemented them. The most Vetinari did was to remind Lipwig that he was keeping an eye on him.

    I hate to say anything negative about anything associated with Pratchett's work... still, am I the only one who thinks that the portrayal of Lipwig lacks a certain amount of the subtlety which made the character so good in the books? Maybe I just never fully acclimated to a certain level of theatricality in acting? His dry wit and understated reactions (when he wasn't performing for the public that is) always reminded me a little bit of Gene Wilder as well as Arthur Dent from the Hitchhiker's Guide, albeit with the instincts of a natural born con man and the wit of... well, of Gene Wilder lol.

    I was really unhappy when they chose someone with light hair, but he was really good and I enjoyed watching this movie. The only inconsistency I found was when he was answering about playing a game sometimes "we already are" that seemed a little bit out of Vetinari's character, not calm and self confident enough. But I guess it was in the script that way, so nothing to complain on his side. Anyway, good job and good movie. Highly recommended.

    I do think Dance was the best Vetinari yet but I feel like Vetinari as a character is a bit like Sherlock Holmes, always played by actors far older than the actual character.
    We know that Young Sam Vimes was born on the 30th anniversay of the Glorious Revolution. Going Postal is set a couple of years after this, I'd say rough estimate that he's between 4 and 6. During the revolution Vetinari is last year of school (18). Therefore he's only 52-54. Dance is in his mid-60s.

    Dance seldom has more than a few scenes in most movies and yet everyone makes a fuss about him saying stuff and nonsense like 'he steals the show, blah-blah-blah', 😒 as if the other actors are insignificant. Prior to GoT, he was little known.

      Frank Lee Steamed Charles Dance has been a well known actor, starting with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1970s. In the 80s he was in The Jewel in the Crown on TV for which he received the same kind of praise and fame as in GoT. I don’t think he’s done much in Hollywood.
