  • I was ready to upgrade my old cargo carrier system for something much nicer looking with better functionality. So I fabricated a new frame and purchased a large toolbox to use and this was the outcome. Real happy with it! This is the new Abom BBQ camp box.

    I would put a piece of Scotch 130C Linerless rubber splicing tape between the box and frame at the bolt holes to help with keeping any moisture out of the box. Just a thought.

      That might also help mitigate some of the potential for galvanic corrosion between the aluminum and stainless steel.

      Excellent idea. If the carrier is powder coated there should be no galvanic corrosion between the metals. Hopefully Adam will have the frame powder coated as well.

    This was an excellent day. Videos dropped from my three favorite channels (Scrappy Industries, Diesel Creek, and Abom79). Thanks Adam for completing the trifecta!
    Thanks for helping out, Abby. I'm sure you're exuberance and support are very important for Adam.
    I really like the new aluminum box, Adam. Nicely done with the mounting. Good to see you put the new Spokane, Washington, USA vice to work a bit. She's a beauty.
    That welding fixture table is definitely fantastic. Glad to see you're putting it through its paces and it's functioning admirably.

    If you don't cap (close) the open ends of those tubes, you're inviting wasps to setup house inside. Take it from an old farm boy. Close 'em up.

    That box will definitely keep the rain out but it won't keep out moisture. If there are no vents, condensation will form on the inside. Hot day, cools off at night, lid is closed, moisture will condense on the inside.

    random suggestion, put a few nylon washers under the box in between the frame and the box. this will allow water and dust to drop out the bottom and not get stuck and rot the frame.

  • @user-Carl-2964
    @user-Carl-2964 Před 4 měsíci +8

    2 suggestions.. drop rubber/ strips on frame before you secure the box to the frame. The rubber/silicon is to prevent steel/ aluminium reaction 😮from rain and/or salt water and to slow the wear from the metal movement. I had it on mine and it lasted years. My friend had none and wore thru holes where the metal sat inside 3 years. On mine, I had brackets to hold ratchet straps (light duty) in place, to secure top while traveling, and to hold items on the top, if needed. Also not a bad idea to add reflectors to the bottom support for improved visibility. Both back and sides.

    Hey Adam,
    A seemingly non trivial thing… the forward open ends of the tubes.. will scoop up all the water ( when there is a storm ) as you drive … a couple of rubber plugs
    Also… the bolts inside the box to hold it on the frame… I hope you used Nylock nuts .. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen storage like this fall off the back of a camper ( I drive a semi ). I have a different sense of things that rattle loose

      Maybe add a simple car door switch to the box latch linkage that will light up on the dash if not locked up. Would probably have to run the circuit through a separate plug unless he had an unused terminal in the regular trailer plug. Heck, come to think about it a third brake light on the back would be a nice feature also!

    On the bumber you can also use 2 clamp on receivers 2 feet apart. Then make your custom tray with two hitches, or three if you want to keep a center mount. That will alleviate twisting and provide a stronger connection.

    Alright, I have one for you if you like. Do you have a trailer plug on the back of the camper? Probably not as it is already a trailer but you can buy or make a harness for one and install it. Then, since you seem concerned about the brake lights, mount either brake lights/turnsignals on the exterior of the box or one of those low profile bars across the box. Run the wires through the tube in the middle and plug in to your harness. No more comments or worries about blocking the lights.

    I like that locking pin. But the downside is it can be removed too easily. Instead of a camper, I haul my Jeep on a trailer. I've been out in Moab where guys have had their whole trailer and Jeep stolen off the back of their trucks by removing the hitch. My hitch pin is a lock. Sure, it can still be defeated, but I am going to make the dirtbags work for it. :)

  • @odiekivarkis8193
    @odiekivarkis8193 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Hi Adam, I watch your shows all the time and I know you have a good sense of how a structure behaves. The detail of the steel support is very simple and very elegant. If anything I would question about the design would be the strength of the middle connection to the truck. This connection resists the entire load resulting from the weight of the box and the impact that magnifies the load when you hit a bump or a pot hole at some speed. I am sure you considered that and that is why you kept saying that there was only light stuff in the box.
