  • Having invested many hours of my time and no short amount of TP purchases into the MMORPG Tree of Savior over the last few months, I now move on to make a commentary/review for the benefit of others.
While this video is quite lengthy, it should provide you a very educated idea on the question of whether Tree of Savior is worth your time or not.

I used to play this game years ago. Have about 3k hours sunk into it and I can wholeheartedly say this game needs a FFXIV treatment and be rebuilt from the ground up if it wants any chance of making a significant comeback. The only people who play this game anymore are the ones who sunk way too much time and/or money into it to feel like they can quit, and even then those people are leaving too because there isn't enough of a casual playerbase to warrant spending the time/money to flex and be better than them. This is why new and returning players are shoehorned into the late/endgame. If you're not constantly grinding towards that next slight upgrade to your character, then all you're doing is wasting your own time. The actual story and plot of this game has been pushed so far into the background that I'd be genuinely surprised if even currently active veterans actually know what this game's about.
Tree of Savior has fallen into the trap where the endgame is just log in, do your dailies, log off, repeat. Which honestly would be perfectly fine if the stuff that came before it was compelling in any way. But aside from the art direction and soundtrack, which is absolutely phenomenal, there's nothing. You don't even get the chance to have fun before you're thrown to the never-ending grind, and it's really disappointing to see

Oh, hello there Shanochi! Thanks for the reply. I've tried to be as neutral as possible despite my own personal sensitivities sometimes being present, I really hope that came through in the video. I also hope that it hasn't made it too intimidating for potential new players, merely informative. Naturally, in my opinion, a person who joins a game that is in a way "not for them" is likely to become toxic later and, probably, it is better for both us enthusiasts and them to not bring forth such an experience. I still hope the community will grow despite it all. I made it my goal to try, as much as possible to "share the whole story" though this likely fell short.

    + Massive grind
    + Pay2win (esp. PvP)
+ Not all builds are balanced
+ Very low playerbase (Queues for dungeons can take ages, or might not pop at all)
+ Dungeon queues are limited per day / week
+ You have to grind dailies on all your characters to be optimal
+ You have to play multiple characters to be optimal (same problem Lost Ark has, but without the limit to 6)
+ Your gear is always made irrelevant by the next level cap update
This game is great and relaxing to be played on a second monitor while watching a movie or series, if you're just playing for yourself and you're not trying to compete. You'll need a casual mindset and like grinding the same mob spot for hours on end to enjoy it.
If you intend to compete with the top players however, better be ready to dual-wield your credit cards and cancel all your hobbies.

For the crown, instead of farming contents related to it you can just grind, or use the coins you get from weekly boss to buy the components needed, they are in the season 1 coin shop

It was one hell of a game back in iCBT, but now its not that good anymore, I feel like the devs dont really care about it now. As much as I love the aesthetics, music and gameplay I cant recommend this game to anyone anymore.

-Should you play Tree of Savior early in 2022? -Yes!!
-Should you play Tree of Savior in late 2022? -fk NO!!
They just nerfed all Beginner content to the ground. You make EVEN LESS Silver now. Beginners can no longer access Div.Singluarity. Challenge Mode gives a third less Silver now. World Boss Raid is harder now because the materials that new players need have been nerfed to encourage new players to spend money and no, I'm not talking like $50, it's literally $300-400 just SO you can actually play some end game content. Good Luck going into some beginner raids because you will get slaughtered. Yes, scales are easier to get now but it doesn't mean much to literally new players because the most important thing that NEW PLAYERS need are materials to upgrade their God Armor and Vaivoras. If you are +30 enhancement and have lv1 God and Vaivoras, you don't stand a chance against the beginning raids that no one does anymore.
-New/Returning Player rewards nerfed to the fking ground. You used to get around 5Million attribute points to upgrade yourself, now it's like 2Million only. Also, no more Div.Singularity tickets. Instead, they give you entry tickets to Raids that beginners can't even fking play.
-You make less Silver now. You have to play longer and chore through MORE boring endless crap just so u can buy material off the market to upgrade your vaivora and God armor. Prices for essentials have not dropped.
-World Boss Raid no longer gives Demon Lord Boxes so good luck in trying to get a Rexipher or Lion dude legend card because they don't fking exist as a drop anymore. Also, you don't have the stuff to properly fight World Boss Raid because NEW PLAYERS don't have the upgrade stuff to STAND A FKING CHANCE. HAVE FUN trying to reach the damage limit for rewards!
Solution: Spend $300-400 to buy the God armor and vaivora upgrades so you can even put your foot through the door to even play the current state of the game.
Also the TOS Support Guild is trash since Tsugami and friends left. Card Parties at 10pm at the night on Sundays like people exist only to play ToS. No one is there to answer questions and Vice Presidents are there to do the bare minimum and do stuff super late at night at 10-11PM just so they can say that they did requirements so they can get the 3000TP reward.

      @eriksanimeandgamingcomment5165  Před rokem +3

These points about hurdles for new players that you made are pretty legitimate, in my experience. In order to become competent in ToS, it is certainly true that I did end up purchasing a lot of TP. I am in absolute agreement that spending $300-400 to make progress is probably painfully accurate, notwithstanding someone with miraculous RNG landing a pair of wings to sell for 500m+.
Another good point is that PvP in some senses requires an extra gearing hurdle. Namely, a Demon Lord Blut legendary card and for many classes another ark such as disperse or suppress. To get a second ark to level 10 is another massive investment of one's already scarce silver. Something like 350k+ nucle is needed for the level ups, as well as some additional mats.
Challenge mode potentially yields good silver output if one is willing to sell nucle and sierra, but that is a difficult trade off, and may be tough to run for those not geared up with the new 480 equipment.

    • @eriksanimeandgamingcomment5165
      @eriksanimeandgamingcomment5165  Před rokem +3

To add another explanation to all this, something I forgot in this video was that my perspective is a little off on account of the gear level of my character. Vakarine coins only come easy if a person is already well equipped with 480 gear - i.e. Magic Association Assembly, and weekly boss raid if they are able to rank.
For a person in Vasilisa gear it would be unlikely that they can pull in the same amount of Vakarine coins that others can, and things would indeed feel far more difficult. The only solution to this is to rush 480 gear but again, without the armor and vaivora level ups that you mentioned the new players will feel rather limited.
In IMC's defence here, as others have pointed out - they have had free events in the past where these were given out for free to those who attended all the event days. One event had a free level 4 vaivora voucher (This I got), one of the previous week versions of that same event had an armor voucher (think it was level 2 or 3), which occurred when I was taking a break and thus I missed such. I have also heard from others still that at one point there was an event with a free level 10 ark voucher.
Still, these events with giveaways like that (Level 4 vaivora, etc.) do not seem to be all that common compared to regular events. Maybe this happens twice a year, or something like that.

I am considering returning to ToS. I first played when the game released, then stopped for some time before picking it up again. According to Steam, I last played in early 2019 and have a total play time of only 200 hours (may have been more than 200; I don't remember if I played it off-Steam before).
Personally, the most important part of a game is character progression. I don't mind if the endgame is lackluster or difficult to get into, as long as the progression feels good.
For example, in Path of Exile, I progress my character through the campaign, then get to yellow maps (early endgame) before getting bored and create another character. In Maplestory, I get to the last advancement, to the point where the character is "fully-fleshed out", before I do the same: get bored and create another character. In other words, endgame is boring to me and I often restart with a new character after early endgame.
With that in mind, do you think the current ToS is the right game for me? I'm fine with playing solo as long as the character/build progression is good. I wouldn't last till the true-endgame anyway.

If your focus is the character itself and provided you are not unwilling to pay a bit for experimentation (skill resets, etc) or at least wait patently for the events that provide them, then you may find ToS to be rather enjoyable. Quite a few classes have been added, so there is quite a bit of build diversity and the meta has not been terribly static in that regard.
Coincidentally I have been playing Path of Exile a bit lately and I am enjoying it a lot, it is rather interesting that you mentioned it. I suppose that if you enjoy Path of Exile in this way, you will likely ToS in a similar vein. Only a big difference is that in PoE, just like Diablo 2 , there is a lot of excitement that comes from the drop format and frequency (high drop rate on rares etc. with RNG modifiers) and the only close equivalent in ToS to something like that is probably costume gambling which is painfully more expensive.

@@eriksanimeandgamingcomment5165 Thanks for the reply and insight!
What a coincidence that you play PoE too; I don't know many players who play both of these (at least not as their go-to games). Unfortunately, I also quit in early 2021, because the game became too overwhelming in terms of crafting mechanics. I love the variety of equipment and content, but now it takes way too much time to craft those Rares your character needs. Would you say PoE is... less overwhelming in that regard nowadays?
Back on topic: Fortunately, the RNG of Rare equipment doesn't appeal to me. I much prefer making builds out of as many Uniques as possible. I suppose it has something to do with their build-enabling function. In this case, I think I will poke around ToS again! Thanks again for the insight!
P.S.: You mentioned newbies having the option to instant-level to 400. Since I wouldn't mind progressing alone as mentioned previously, do you think I should ignore the instant-level option? It's fine if you're unsure--I'll can just try both anyway.
