Not sure if anyone's explained this already, but 'Hanbada' means 'large sea' whereas 'Taesan' means 'large/great mountain'. It has added meaning when you find out more backstory...but for now, it shows how Woo Youngwoo is like a whale roaming freely in a large sea where she has freedom to be independent and be nurtured. Mountains in Korean (and many Asian) cultures are seen as a symbol of strength and reliability as it shelters people...but I guess you can say that since Youngwoo understands or identifies with whales more, then a large sea is better suited to her.

(This is not a spoiler) at the end of this episode, the female boss of the 'Hanbada' law firm calls woo's dad "Sun bae" which means the senior in college (usually in public education institutions like high-school).
So you can assume that woo's father was senior of woo's boss when he was at the college

    • @lixjoonhoneymt7149
      @lixjoonhoneymt7149 Před 2 lety +27

it doesn’t just mean in college or education… all it means is senior, this could be a senior in a work or educational environment, just someone who started before you.
Ill use kpop as an example: Person A debuts after Person B, therefore Person A would refer to Person B as seonbae 선배
The thing is it has to be the same field of work, and when it comes to schools it’s usually just for those who went to the same school, it’s an interpersonal honorific for those who are your seniors in a specific field
A kpop idol wouldn’t call an older comedian 선배 unless that comedian was a kpop idol who debut before them, instead they would use 씨 (ssi) or 님 (nim), Ssi is more often used with the persons name while Nim is more often used with their “position”, Nim is considered more polite or a higher level of respect than Ssi

Yes, seniority is a thing among siblings. The law the eldest brother quoted at the beginning, about how the older you are the more inheritance you get, did used to be the law apparently - Young-woo said it changed around 2000. Even if you're twins, whoever comes out first is still the older of the two 🤷🏼‍♀ And in Korean, there are special terms you use for your older siblings, so for example, if you rewatch, you'll notice Dong-sam referring to his brothers as "hyungnim", which is a respectful way for a male to address his older brother(s). This is one of the reasons people joke that the most common question in Korea is "What year were you born?" because when people meet they need to figure out who's older and who's younger, or if they're the same age, since that will determine how they address each other, as well as the honorifics they use, as you mentioned.

Best Reaction - Extraordinary Attorney Woo. I will Wait next Epi .

My appreciation is in the fact that all these reactions towards people with disabilities in the drama so far is so so real and the character development is also just as real like her mentor. And it's also real in how society really forces people to buy into the dog eat dog world, especially in very competitive professions. It sucks.
Also, in Korean and most other Asian culture, age is a huge factor to the way respectful and formal language is used. To the point where Korean, Chinese, and Japanese work culture easily becomes toxic because of it.

    Dong Dong One
    Dong Dong Two
    Dong Dong Three

yes, filial piety is a very significant value here in asia, especially in east asia (korea, japan, china, etc.), to the point where it can get abused and used against others. it's something that a lot of western audience may miss or not understand fully if they're not familiar with the concept. it's very hard for the youngest child to go against the eldest child just as it's very hard for children (regardless of age), in general, to go against their parents or any elder in their family (e.g grandparents).
also, i very much enjoy your discussions in the end of every episode !! looking forward to see you guys watch more episodes :))

Woo to the Young to the Woo! Dong to the Geu to the Rami! * Flails arms * *bows* HA! This was adorable 😍 Geurami and the lawyer boss are my favorites. Also fun fact: Dong Geurami (name of Young Woo's friend) means circle in Korean which was probably given on purpose. I heard symmetrical shapes like circles bring comfort to autistic people (could be wrong though. Heard this in passing and I don't have a legit source).

Korean has his/her own Registered Seal (the stamped copy of the seal is registered at the government office and used to check the real owner's will for important legal activities such as real estate transactions) and it is used for a contract or important legal action. it is different to the westerners who usually use signature. At the law firm office they have just signed at new contract it is also clear because it was done in front of a lawyer.

Don’t you worry about JunHo’s gift search here in CZcams bonus clip in SWOON Netflix extraordinary attorney woo. But they released it after episode 5 so better watch episode 5 first for the continuity and I’m going to comment there regarding my POV in that clip. Hehehe! Anyway I really love your reactions to the point that I subscribed because I can’t wait for your reactions. I think another reason that Young Woo came back to work is the words of JunHo, he has small screen time but contribute big time. Those encouraging words that someone believed in your capabilities lift up Young Woo’s spirit, I mean she love the law that’s the reason she became an attorney, although she tripped on the last episode, someone help her up to stand up again, and with her family, best friend, colleagues and of course the potential other half will be there to complete her. Well! I just love her! I can’t wait for you to discover and next story about the characters! Good luck!

I think the brother's names also refer to their order. Il, I, Sam is 1, 2, 3 in Korean numbers. So Dong-Il is first born (#1). Dong-I is second born (#2). Dong-Sam is third born (#3). Kind of a really straight forward way of saying Child 1, Child 2, Child 3. I believe.
