That's really the point of New Order's sound it was on purpose that Bernard's voice didn't take over the music. In Joy Division Ian was the focal vocal. It's been mentioned in many interviews by the band.

Le pire je crois, c'était pour moi un concert de Garbage au Zénith en 98 (Aïe mes oreilles se souviennent encore de la douleur ) ! Trop de machines t'éloignent de la scène...
