this has become one of my favorite videos on youtube. I come back to it every couple of months to remind myself why I make music. Pure rock and roll consciousness...

🥁 Steve f*ckin Shelley... he's a beast! 🤘 This is a great (and underrated) period of the band's history. I've seen quite a few clips of great SY shows from the late 90s. As an album, A Thousand Leaves has such a loose and meandering feel - which comes across in the live versions really well. Thanks for posting.😎
Before they had all their gear stolen in Orange County in ‘99( where I’m from ) I wonder how different their sound was. After they had their gear stolen from what I understand, they began playing older songs again. How they meshed their guitars into howling beasts was always fun to watch. By turning their back on classic rock they revitalized the form. They reinvented rock, punk and noise into their own signature sound, which, now that SY is done is great to re-examine.

Steve Shelley also toured as a guest with Disappears, a band out of Chicago ..that Sonic Youth helped promote. czcams.com/video/s70GVolnehI/video.html

Turning the fridge off is a bad idea.

They did actually blossom out of the NO WAVE movement of late 70s NYC (worth investigating), so that they're abrasive and original is inevitable
happy birthday!!
