"We need Will Smith."
He was 7 at the time, so.....
I think the kid wanted coffee ice cream. Not actual coffee.
The Indianapolis was a true story. Two writers took passes at that speech before Robert Shaw rewrote it himself. He was a playwrite as well as an actor.
TV reporter on the beach on the 4th of July is Peter Benchley the author of the book Jaws
Coffee icecream
Fun Fact: Several decades after the movie’s release, Lee Fierro who played Mrs.Kintner(the woman who slapped Brody) walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an “Alex Kintner Sandwich”. She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son in the movie. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot.
That's amazing.
Adorable.
That story is too unbelievable to be true. But if it is, WOW!
@@NexusDarkworld338 it really is amazing, isn’t it, I also find it amazing that the actor who played the boy in real life has the same last name as a certain fictional serial killer we all know.
That's an interesting fun fact. You should make an article about this.
Fun Fact: The shark (Jaws) is commonly called Bruce, after Steven Spielberg's lawyer.
Not suprising considering they are commonly referred to the sharks of the justice system.
Cool 😎
...And, was on the job about as much.
And in honor of that, Bruce is the name of the great white shark in Finding Nemo.
Like in the "Raft" Game?
You have to remember in 1975, the general public knew little to nada about sharks. This was the movie that spawned generations of marine biologists and brought about shark week et all. A summer beach town earns their entire year's money in the 3 months, and has to live on it the rest of the year. In the novel, you learn that the mayor was also in debt to the NY Mafia from whom he borrowed money for medical procedures for his sick wife. In exchange he gave them rental properties on Amity, that they could have all the rental profits from. No summer renters - no mob money = cement shoes for the Mayor Vaughn. :D
We were so ignorant about sharks and their behavior at the time. The author, Peter Benchley had no idea that ppl were going to go on a shark killing spree after the film. Up until his death, he became an advocate and educator on real shark behavior. He has a bit part in the film as a reporter on the beach. He was an amazingly creative writer.
Öh? I've read the book and it's a not a good book. The film makers have taken the only decent thing in the book - the shark - and cut the rest.
The boy wasn't asking for coffee. His mother had literally just asked him if he wanted ice cream. He was asking her for coffee flavored ice cream instead of typical chocolate or vanilla ice cream.
Coffee ice cream is huge in New England. We used to have some for dessert after a meal of clam cakes and brown bread. That or some doughboys. Yum!
I've seen this movie a million times and I'm just now getting that! Thanks!
@@DeanStrickson That is so interesting. Because my best friend grew up in Connecticut and his favorite flavor of ice cream is coffee. I never in a million years would have thought there was any connection.
No. He was asking for coffee.
@redrick8900 ice cream. Pay attention. Loraine Gray's character literally asked what kind of ice cream.
Jaws was the first summer blockbuster. After that, studios purposely made movies for the summer.
That was "old man" swimming. His heart was pounding, his lungs were burning, his legs were heavy and he's OLD.
Plus he was fully clothed, that's extremely heavy.
The Indianapolis story is true except for a few minor details. Robert Shaw's monologue was a one take acting masterpiece and, yes, he was drunk.
Two takes:. One drunk, one sober. Intercut.
@@briansass4865 thought that I'd read somewhere that they were unsatisfied with the sober one and used the drunk one in its entirety. Either way, still a brilliant piece of acting.
@@cindiloohoo it was actually the other way around. Shaw asked Spielberg to have a few before shooting and showed up in the bag. His performance was mostly unintelligible. Shaw sobered up, apologized, did a second take. They interspliced both takes. This is from the documentary.
@@briansass4865 Oh, ok. It's been a long time since I read anything about the film (I saw it in theaters when it first came out) so I probably got it backwards.
The fact is as follows: Shaw was trying to do method acting and present Quint as being truly drunk in that scene. He got a bit drunk for realism, did the scene for many takes but was flubbing lines and not performing well. He did it again the next day cold sober and ACTED drunk...and nailed it.
Spielberg was only 26 when he directed this. The term “blockbuster’” was invented because of this film.
Yes
You'll be happy to know that the underwater-disembodied-face-in-the-hole-in-the-boat scene jump-scare, among reactors on CZcams, is the absolute most reliable jump-scare of all movies, as far as I can tell. That one seems to get absolutely everyone, always. A good one to study for effectiveness.
He was asking for coffee ice cream-a popular flavor of ice cream. And Richard Shaw’s Indianapolis story is considered one of the greatest monologues in movie history and most of it was ad-libbed by the actor.
Fun fact, the reporter seen at 20:47 is actually Peter Benchley, the author of the original Jaws novel.
I think his kid meant coffee flavor ice cream!
And I never thought about Quint before when the shark blows up but you’re right he wouldn’t have been digested at all!!
I think this is one of my favorite collabs you have done, loved the reaction!
Thanks bro! Had a lot of fun with flair
When a person is in shock, your body cannot move. Also, swimming can become exhausting if you are already fatigued and trying to avoid attack by shark. Easy to say "swim faster" when the person in the water is stressed and tired.
*And* fully clothed.
Sequels always try to do it bigger, so it's gonna be fun to see where they go with the next film. It was a great experience working with you, have a great week and I'll see you again soon!
I think you'll enjoy Jaws 2. It's not a bad sequel to be honest. Skip 3 and 4 though ;)
2 isn't bad, but they went overboard... ha an unintended pun there... after that
Avoid all the sequels. Dont waste you time on them. Speilberg wasn't involved.
@@TayannaStudios Jaws 2 good film is.
@Flare Unique.....this first movie is the best of the "Jaws" franchise -- they go downhill with each sequel - especially #4!!
5 deaths. #1:girl swimming #2:little boy #3:Ben Gardner(even though he wasn't eaten, the shark still managed to cause his death) #4:rowboat guy #5:Quint. Presumably the dog Pippet also got eaten just before the boy.
My favorite line of any movie: "Smile, you son of a bitch!" Epic.
And "You're gonna need a bigger boat."
one of my favorite horror movie lines along with "Get away from her you b*tch!" and "Yeah, f**k you too!!"
@@bridgethaines7127 Yes, indeed. :)
@@bridgethaines7127 Yes absolutely!
I watched this movie on repeat a lot when I was in middle school (I was a weird kid lol) but after the first watch and I went to my swimming lesson, I kept hearing the theme whenever my head was underwater and it freaked me out 😂
Come on!!!! The Shark saw a human trapped in a cage and was trying to free him!!! lol
The mom who slapped Brody didn’t know how to act, so she really slapped him so hard that Roy almost started crying
Really?
Outside of Brody, Hooper, Quint, the mayor, and Brody's wife practically the entire rest of the cast were just local people from the filming site.
I'm not a fisher expert, but the things that Quint used to strap himself on the chair are used in the heavy fishing. Those things are used to lock the fisher to the chair (that's locked to the boat), so when the fish (or whatever thing) is pulling, the fisher wouldn't be pulled out (meaning falling, getting into water, etc). That's also what Quint uses to support his feet. With that thig he would never be pulled over, so he an pull things bigger than him.
Yep
@@Angelicwings1 yeah they’re called fighting chairs i’m pretty sure
Fun fact...the mechanical shark had constant problems during filming. They had planned on showing the shark more but with all the malfunctions they had to rely on the suspenseful music and what your mind would conjure up. It worked brilliantly 😊
My Friends and I went to see Jaws the Week it opened. We used to go down the Jersey Shore at Long Beach Island. If you swim out a mile there's a sand bar and you can stand up in 4 ft. of water. We'd do this every day we were there. Since seeing Jaws I have Never been in the Ocean again! I'm 69 years old.
Ben's head jump scene never fails. It's perfectly executed.
Apparently, I heard that Spielberg was unsatisfied by the original cut so he did tones of takes in his own pool with the scare at different times so he could find the one that tested better with audiences. I think they did like, 30 takes just for that one jump scare.
20:47 The reporter talking with the microphone is PETER BENCHLEY, he is the author of "Jaws" the book. This is his cameo.
Famous trailer line for the second movie, "Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water."
The story Quin told about the USS Indianapolis going down and the subsequent shark attacks is a true story.
Cool fact the dead body under water half sunken boat scene was done in Steven's pool by him and his wife because he went over budget for that scene because he was never happy with the takes on set.
Nope. It was the film editor Verna Fields pool, not Steven’s. When they were cutting the film together he realised he wanted another scare so she volunteered the use of her pool. She was even OK with adding milk to the water to get the murky effect.
Police chief Brody's son who went to the hospital for being in shock....while being wheeled down the hospital corridor on a gurney, did not want coffee. His mom asked if he wanted ice cream....he said, " coffee " , meaning coffee ice cream, not coffee the drink.
If I remember correctly one of the things that made the USS Indianapolis sinking worse was that when they sank they sent out an SOS but since it was on a secret mission the US charts showed no US ships in that area so they believed it to be a fake SOS sent by the Japanese to lure US ships into a trap, so they basically ignored it which made it take longer for the rescue of the sailors in the water.
Declassified records later showed that three stations received the signals but none acted upon the call.
One commander was drunk, another had ordered his men not to disturb him, and a third thought it was a Japanese trap.
The fact that Navy brass court martialed Captain McVay to hide it's failures in other areas was a travesty.
He was court-martialed on two charges: failing to order his men to abandon ship and hazarding the ship. Cleared of the charge of failing to order abandon ship, McVay was convicted of "hazarding his ship by failing to zigzag".
Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz remitted McVay's sentence and restored him to active duty. McVay retired in 1949 as a rear admiral.
It took until 2001 for the Navy to enter the Congressional language into McVay's official Navy service record, clearing him of all wrongdoing.
There's a play called "An Enemy of the People", written in *1882* about a town that raises most of its budget from the people who flock to the town to "take the waters". When the local doctor discovers that the waters are polluted, he tries to get the waters shut down, but the mayor and the town council fight him to keep them open.
Now you have to watch Psycho (1960) during Halloween season! It’s one of the most iconic and influential horror films ever made.
Did you know? Jaws movie is inspired of true story by “Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916.” The shark kills four people in twelve days. Try watching “The Ghost and the Darkness.” Another true story by Tsavo man-eating lions kills 135 people per month
I loooove The Ghost and the Darkness. Such an underrated film. Terrifying story, too.
There’s a couple deleted scenes up here on CZcams they cut because they were deemed too intense. One is when kid on the raft gets eaten then other is when the shark eats the guy in the row boat on July 4th. Spielberg definitely held back a few times with this movie.
When Alex is pulled underwater if you listen closely, you can hear him say "It hurts! Help--" before it cuts off.
In 1975 when this movie came out it was the first of the giant shark movies. Up until then sharks in movies or t.v. shows were these dolphin sized fish.It came as a surprise to a lot of movie goers that while at 25' long the shark was a bit bigger than the recorded length of Great White's it wasn't much bigger and fishermen reported seeing them at that size.
If Star Wars didn’t exist, this would be my favorite movie of all time.
It’s an absolute masterpiece. And it shows. This movie is often called the first ever summer blockbuster, and it was a cultural phenomenon.
Only problem was it made everyone hate and kill sharks, and unless you're an idiot, there seldom a problem.
It is the original summer blockbuster. The term blockbuster was coined due to the huge queues for the cinema stretching round the 'block'. Even with the greatness of star wars, I think this movie is still the greatest movie ever made. No other movie before or since has had the cultural effect on human beings as a species as this one. You must remember that after this movie released it tapped into the DNA level primal fears we have as humans, and stopped half the planet swimming in the ocean again!!! The soundtrack is perfect, the casting, the acting, the screenplay, the direction, the cinematography. In fact Robert Shaws famous monolgue is arguably the greatest piece of acting in the history of celluloid.
NexusDarkworldProductions,
Jaws actually lead to more scientific knowledge, understanding and finally protection of sharks. Without Jaws, we wouldn't know what we know now about sharks. Jaws was instrumental in marine biology upturn.
That first Star Wars film played in theaters when it came out for a record 1247 weeks. It didn't hit home video until 1997.
The story that Quint told about the sailors getting eaten by the sharks is actually a true story.
Bruce/Jaws: “I’m the biggest, scariest shark in the sea!”
Megalodon: “Hold my teeth.”
Nah.
You know that it is extinct, right? 😂
My dad lived near the beaches of California when this movie came out. He told me that after seeing this movie it took him a while to go in the water.
Also, John Williams' music never disappoints :)
Timothee: that's a pretty big boat there I don't think the shark will attack it that size
Jaws: WATCH ME!!! 😬
Shark attacks are extremely rare but when they do happen it makes headline news. They have a Great White shark exhibit at the California Academy of Science in San Francisco and it's very interesting. More people die from bee stings (a lot more) than shark attacks. And Spielberg credits the mechanical shark breaking down all the time with it being a successful thrilling movie plus the John Williams score.
If I ever get a boat, I'm towing three yellow barrels wherever I go... ;)
Fun fact. Quint was based of a real life person Frank Mundus who was an avid shark hunter until he reached his later years when he did a 180 and became a outspoken conservationist. The radio scene was inspired by him since it actually took place on one of his own fishing trips. He apparently hated when people tried calling in on the radio.
Ahhh!!! 1975, I was in the 8th grade this movie scared thee HELL outta me. GREAT film.
masterpiece of a movie, the build up is awesome
Michael Brody was not asking for coffee, his mom asked what kind of ice cream he would like. Best. Leo.
*What HORROR movie should I watch next!?*
Plz react to anaconda 1997
You haven't done "An American Werewolf in London" have you??
Like "Jaws" you don't see the creature much at first..
But when you do.😳
Poltergeist
Glitter lol.
Freddy part 2
He wasn't asking for coffee as a drink. She asked if he wanted ice cream and he said yes, coffee flavored.
When I was in Cancun, some guys wanted to go swimming at night... I said "no thanks, I saw that movie." 😞
The boys comparing scars….
We gonna stay up all night swapping manly stories and in the morning… Chief is making waffles
This was Spielberg's first movie as a director and was the biggest blockbuster for years, broke all kinds of box office records. This made Spielberg a household name with many great movies to follow
"Quint is everywhere right now" lol!!
It turns out swimming with sharks isn’t that generally dangerous. Great whites are still great whites, but humans aren’t their preferred prey, and this movie really dramatized shark attacks as well as demonized most sharks as man-eating machines. In the years following this film and it’s sequels, the number of incidents where humans deliberately went out to hunt sharks of all kinds went up, and there were education campaigns from the marine biology field to try and counteract that as it was actually turning them into a more endangered species.
Fencing off an area that large, with material strong enough to resist the shark that size and strength anyway, would’ve been prohibitively costly at that time, although that idea does start to reach a point of feasibility in later years and decades, and actually gets tried in one of the sequels..
Would there be some great loss to the animal or human kingdoms if sharks were hunted to extinction? Even a little 10 footer gnawing away at some one's limbs ravenously does not seem so likable that I would say they need to either killed, eradicatedor given the ocean as theres and humans only permitted to swim in shark protected areas. All may not be predatorial. But some are. About human's not being their preferred lunch. My guess is they see a humman as meat. Just like we may see pork as meat. So whilst you say humans are not their preferred. They still attack humans and still thak chunks out of some people. Maybe carots are not himan's preferred food. But they still eat foods which are not their prefered food.
Here comes the founder of blockbuster genre.
It's probably already been said, but the reporter that talked about "a cloud in the shape of a killer shark" was played by Peter Benchley, the author of the book JAWS.
A film for all the family. 😊
My family & I saw JAWS at a drive-in movie when I was 8 in 1975. JAWS kept me out of the water & away from beaches the rest of my life. It was the scariest thing I ever saw that young. Sometimes I go to the public pools in the Summer.
Originally the film was supposed to be WAY more graphic than the final cut. I remember there being an nightmarish unused frame where during Alex's death, the shark was originally supposed to rise out if the water, the boy in his mouth when he slammed down into the ocean floor. The reason this wasn't the case was because the animatronic shark they used kept malfunctioning on set for the first act, so Spielberg came up with the idea of shooting it from a POV, effectively making it more scarier so that the audience would be more frightened when the shark finally did appear onscreen.
This is one of the best film's ever made and it was a masterpiece Steven Spielberg is awesome and always love your reaction ❤ .
There is a 1996 movie called The Beast which was written by the same guy who wrote Jaws. It's a near identical story, but with a giant squid.
It's better to have a bigger boat and not need it than to need a bigger boat and not have it.
Jaws is a classic. I love the first scene. You don’t see the shark or any blood but you know what’s happening to her. Her screams were legit. Guys were underneath her pulling her back and forth and she broke a rib. I think Quint broke the radio because remember his story of the USS Indianapolis (true story by the way). He didn’t want to go through that again so he didn’t want help. He was going to kill the shark or else. These are all good actors. Roy Scheider (Chief Brody) was in some great movies, French Connection, Marathon Man, The Seven Ups, All That Jazz and of course Jaws. The music is classic. Scared me out of the water for a long time. I go in the ocean but not beyond the waves. I saw some fins off Hilton Head SC and high tailed it out of the water and it was dolphins….whew. They had mechanical problems with the shark so they used it sparingly and it worked. Spielberg had the summer blockbuster with this movie. Good reaction guys.
You mentioned Will Smith and the 4th of July. This is the Blockbuster Summer movie that invented the Blockbuster Summer movie concept that Will Smith would become so much a part of years later.
Funfact: The guy playing the reporter on the beach is Peter Benchely, the guy who wrote Jaws.
Fun fact: The reporter with the microphone at 20:48 is Peter Benchley, the man who wrote the book “Jaws”.
I think this Spielberg kid just might have a future in film. ;)
no cgi effect and this movie still working , better than movies like Meg or any sharks movies of 2000's
Wait til you see Jaws the Revenge, Jaws 2 and Jaws 3. They're just as scary as the first.
Robert Shaw , Roy Scheider , Richard Dreyfuss legends . I seen this when it first came out loved it still do
You just seen 3 of greatest actors of 70's Roy Scheider ( Brody ) Robert Shaw ( Quint) Richard Dreyfuss ( Hooper)
Funniest line: “you…you’re not going to do this aboard the ship are ya?”
Oh you have no idea.
This is one of the best movies ever made.
Ahh, one of the beginnings of my submechanophobia. (Fear of underwater man-made objects, like animatronics). 😂
20:53 fun fact. That's Peter Benchley. The man who wrote the story
Since you guys don’t recognize the name Richard Dreyfus, may I suggest a hilarious comedy with him and Bill Murray, “What About Bob?”
Especially cos there's a swimming scene in that lol.
and
*Close Encounters of the Third Kind*
And Mr. Holland's Opus, The Goodbye Girl and a hugely funny and underrated comedy called Let It Ride.
The news reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley the guy who wrote the book the movie was loosely based on
What I remember most about this film is that, when my family and I watched it on TV at home, our dog was with my mother, and he realized , when the music played that preluded the shark attack, that she got tense. About halfway through the movie, it was enough for that music to start playing for him to star howling like crazy.
Are you going to react to any of the sequels?
Saw at the theater as a teen favorite movie of all time ever since thanks guys that was fun
We had a jaws situation with a massive shark in Brighton where I live when I was kid. I saw a massive shape in the water from the pier. Freaked me out at the time, we don't having anything bigger than a person in our parts of the water, if you go west you get larger sea animals, but in the south it basically never happens. I got chased down by a huge eel once, and that was enough for me. Cunts were laughing while I'm pretty sure I broke a few records in a blind panic.
Super collab, I like you both very much :) To the typewriter comment: there are correction tabs/ribbons to correct mistakes. I still used a typewriter in the nineties :)
Thanks, Timothee! Thanks, Flare! 🦈
Remember, the dude who fell in at the dock was fully clothed. Swimming in soaked clothes makes everything waaay harder
This movie was inspired by true events off the coast of Jersey Shore, shark attacks of 1916
Jul 1, 1916 - Jul 12, 1916.
And that has a televised movie 12 Days of Terror
PG-13 2004 ‧ Thriller/Adaptation ‧ 1h 26m.
The term blockbuster was practically invented because of this movie
Coffee flavored ice cream is a New England thing, along with coffee flavored milk. Good stuff too
I’m one of those guys who dives with sharks! Did the cage in South Africa…not very exciting. I’ve been in the water with tigers, sand tigers, hammerheads, black tip oceanics, white tip reefs, nurses, and a bull.
Haven't been swimming (not even in lakes) since seeing this movie as a child. I'm almost 60 now. LOL
I live in Santa Cruz, CA. Last year we reenacted the plot of Jaws with Covid playing the role of the shark.
im so happy you guys disided to film together this made my day
This is based on a book, I haven't read it but the ending is similar but the other guy(Forgot his name) also died in the book, the main guy Brody was the only survivor.
But the test audiences loved the other guy who lived and they changed the ending to where he lived.
The movie ending (for once) is so much more exciting; in the novel the shark is repeatedly stabbed in the brain w/a spear/harpoon and is on It's move toward Brody and just anti-climactically stops and is dead-in-the-water so to speak & sinks. Spielberg, not surprisingly, did it so much better!
Forgive for spoilers if you planned on reading the book- you would've wished for the movie ending regardless. 😔
i saw this movie first time also this year. still fresh in my mind, can hear the scratching on the blackboard too😫
Fun fact: the scene when they find the head in the boat was filmed in the editors swimming pool because they were out of money to film it.
I saw Jaws in the theater when I was 16. Scared the crap out of me.
Jaws is a true classic movie and the best animal-horror film^^ ( for me 😁 )
Another good one is C2-Killerinsect but it`s a lot of fun in there!!
33:00 The story that Quint is telling is a true story. When a Japanese submarine sank a US ship, the crew swimming in the water were eaten by sharks.
You probably knew one person in that opening scene by the fire- Steven Spielberg was the guy playing the guitar.
oh really NICE!
@@TimotheeReacts Great reaction as usual. Jaws 2 is worth a watch. I wouldn’t bother with the other sequels, although the 4th is almost in the “so bad it’s good” territory.
The object of putting the barrels into him is to drown him. He has to keep water constantly moving over his gills to breathe. If he's immobilized by the barrels, he can't breathe.
Sharks are pretty intelligent and also be very shy. Never forget the real Monster here. The Mayor.
Also that Tigershark victim was real.
