Not just that, the design prevents any blood clot from causing blockages downstream, which is one of the important part of this procedure to get right.
That's different and treated differently depending on various factors. If you're talking about coronary heart disease they usually do a PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) where they put a stent around an atherosclerotic coronary vessel and expand it. Alternatively if it's a very occluded artery they may do CABG (coronary artery bypass graft) where they open the chest cavity, take a vessel from one part of the body, and attach it to the heart so that you form an alternative path of blood for the heart@@MuslimahDoonkk

And this method could be applied as well when there is a build up of cholesterol in the blood vessel. When there is a high amount of cholesterol in the blood vessels this also restricts the blood flow. Doctors insert a stent into the blood vessels and then they expand the mesh (same step shown here), and this time the cholesterol that was originally built up will be pressured and squished against the wall of the blood vessel. And once the cholesterol is now squished, the blood can flow through and regulate.
Cholesterol cannot be removed like this as it builds up on the wall, unlike the clot which is on the lumen. If you put the pressure needed to remove cholesterol from the wall the vessel has a high chance if rupture.
