    To be fair, the vaccine for Malaria was conceived in the 1960s, formulated in the 90s, and then tested till 2016. Yes, it didnt get rolled out till later.
    As for what humanity had before that, the Malaria prophylaxis are basically the pills you take on a regular basis. So the continual pill use is actually pretty accurate.

    - No climbing towers to reveal more of the map
    - No loading screens for entering buildings or missions
    - All cutscenes are seamless and you’re always in control of your character
    - You don’t have to pause the game to open the map
    - Stealth where you don’t see people through walls or lure them with rocks, so it genuinely requires strategy.
    - Actually smart companions who can die if you’re not careful
    - A map that’s small enough where you don’t have to fast travel everywhere
    - No stealth bar, the only way you know you’re seen is with a bullet
    - Outposts get taken back by enemies and don’t just stagnate (there is also a story explanation)
    - No racing or fishing minigames: it’s a total warzone.
    I’d argue this is the ONLY good Far Cry game. All future games abandoned what made 2 so great.

      @@Svikter A remaster would be good and I would play it, but I think a full on remake could really enhance it to the fullest. For example, I can barely understand most of the characters in the game because the voice actors are rushing through their lines like they really have to take a piss, so they could bring in new voice actors to give better performances (I'd want to bring back Dwayne Hill as the Jackal though because he was genuinely great). Also we could remove that ugly 2008 brown filter and with modern tech really capture the natural beauty of Africa. And there's some other smaller changes I can think of like more customizable weapons and having a voiced protagonist. I think a remake could really be something special.

    On the map issue: It might be that the devs just belonged to the generation that really had to use maps on longer trips. And that forms a habit of planning your route and then putting it aside.
    Checking on the map is something you only do if your plan does not work, and you stop your car to do it.

      Gun jamming should work as it does in RDR2 where you have to maintain your gun and clean it up if you get it muddy.

    • @AgeofJP
      @AgeofJP Před 7 dny +1

      @@SynthLizard8 it worked that way to prevent you holding on to a weapon that you haven't unlocked yet...from what I remember, the degradation system had practically no effect after you figure out the VERY simple solution, that is: everytime you visit the weapon trader, pick up a new version of each equipped weapon.
      If you only pick up ammo and never replace your weapon until it explodes, it's kinda your fault for neglecting a pretty basic gameplay system...the weapons you bought and unlocked easily last an entire mission before showing any signs of jamming (from my experience)

    • @SynthLizard8
      @SynthLizard8 Před 7 dny +1

      @@AgeofJP Nah, I think it's far more personable and realistic to just clean and maintain your weapon rather then just swapping out a entire military grade rifle every time you pop in to the shop or hideout, maybe polish the scope lens, clean of the grime and dirt, give it some oil.
      People praise FC2 for it's realism and immersion, that seems more like it to me and gameplay wise it's far more convenient.

    • @AgeofJP
      @AgeofJP Před 2 dny

      @@SynthLizard8 I mean yes, IF gun cleaning had been a mechanic then that'd be the way to go...but it isn't. I should've specified that I don't really disagree with your point, I was merely giving an explanation of how the gameplay mechanic was intended and how you were supposed to deal with it. After all, in RDR2 enemies don't drop strong weapons long before you unlocked them...I remember picking up Tier 2 weapons like the SVD way before I unlocked them, but they always came with the drawback of being at like 30% "health" so I usually picked them up, shot one or two mags and then picked up my original gun again.
      I honestly think it was a great and intuitive mechanic in that regard.
      And it's not like that's necessarily less realistic than RDR2, just a different mechanic for a different type of game...the guns in FC2 don't break because they're dirty, they break because of the constant stress you put them under as you're being an active statistical factor in declining the population of Africa (the process of breaking is hugely sped up for the game obviously). A cloth+oil doesn't fix that.
      In RDR2 meanwhile gunfights are much more sparse, so the guns don't break and just get dirty and loose some performance...and the game thrives on such minute tasks as cleaning your weapon, or eating, or all the other little things. The game's just much more chill and above that it's just MUCH MORE in general.
      And I like both game's mechanics, but I don't think they'd work well together.
      And lastly, I think FC2 absolutely deserves the praise it gets for realism and immersion...but man come on, obviously it stinks compared RDR2 when it comes to these factors. But so does literally every game ever.
      It's pretty unfair to compare a 2008 game to the game with record breaking budget that set a new gold standard in the modern single player open world genre. And more than 15 years later FC2 is still one of a kind in it's own right, like, there's no alternative out there if you want THAT kind of game. You can't say that about many games out there

      "bumping into a checkpoint every 2 minutes" oh god I remember for each and every checkpoint I slowly developed a route with the lowest risk that the enemies get enough shots in that the engine starts smoking (which slows down the car substantially)
      And I remember dreading the outposts where I KNEW from my research that no such route exists there and they WILL shoot my engine so I MUST get out and wrench it.

    At this point in the game your character is suffering from advanced malaria sickness (which you can confirm during this part of the game) even with the pills you’ve been taking, you will die. This is way the Jackel calls you a “terminal case…same as me”. Likewise the jackel is also suffering from a brain cancer that will also kill him.

When I get back to an armory, if I've lost everything, I win.
    Repeat.

    Far cry 2 is my favorite by far. I’m replaying it now on infamous and it’s so much fun. Everything is trying to kill you, the weapon selection is excellent, the map is huge and diverse, and the physics engine and gunplay is superb. The guns feel powerful and the enemies react viscerally to being shot. Because it’s an older game, it also has so fewer restrictions on gameplay, meaning unlike newer games that feel like interactive movies with the cutscenes and guided missions, Far Cry 2 just gives you your objective and the way you approach it is up to you. When you come upon a location of enemies, you have so much choice on how you eliminate them. Maybe one person will park the truck on a hill and rain down fire from afar with the machine gun, whereas someone else may prefer to go in guns blazing. It’s incredible.

I think the visuals of foreign mercenaries fighting, on the behalf and by invitation of a local warlord is a perfect setting where nothing is good/evil. Going from fighting to the serene beauty of Africa's bush villages, the hidden fortresses which were constructed thousands of years ago and still proving their worth by hosting warlords and their parties. It's a very cool thing I've only seen done well in this game. Farcry 5 did get close this, but Farcry 2 just does it so well. The downtime in this game is what makes it so great.

    The weapon degredation as annoying it becomes is a pretty nice touch. Usually when a game has that it plays to the game's aesthetic, even some storytelling. Here, you're in a failed state in Africa going through a civil war with an influx of (repeatedly) used arms. All in an environment that plays hell on your equipment. All you need to do is look at your weapon to see that, hell even the newer ones you get at shops have some wear and tear. Same goes with malaria if for no other reason than to reinforce the idea that "you are not the lord of death" that the game tells you.
    Plus, if I recall there's a good chance each weapon you see is there thanks to the Jackal.
    Lastly to touch on the "ending the war" bit. There's a good chance those mercs there who were essentially stranded when shit hit the fan would at best get left blowing in the wind or at worst... well get executed.

    Loved this game. So much atmosphere. The gun degradation and malaria were great mechanics. Entropy was pervasive here. Not to mention the healing animations! Yikes! Grim and very cool.
    Only would have preferred the factions could tell who you were, and maybe sprayed their name on checkpoints under their control. To see the sides actively fight for them occasionally might have been a good stretch goal.
    But, as it was, the game is full of chaos and entropy. It is intensely immersive and very gritty. My favourite fc game.

  • @AgeofJP
    @AgeofJP Před 7 dny +2

    you weren't supposed to look at the map all the time...or at least I didn't and instead I used it how you actually use a map. Check where I need to go, decide the entire path I'm going to take and memorize it, and lastly check what is the name of the target location and if other major outposts are on the way then their names too...from that point on the little small map that's in every vehicle is more than enough to navigate the path I decided on, and if not THEN I open the full map again.
    And since I memorized the names of the locations, if I don't want to look at the small map either I can follow the abundant signs placed at literally every junction pointing towards each nearby location...something you seem to have overlooked ironically because you had your eyes glued on the map while driving (which is irresponable to begin with)

Because I rarely drove, the re-spawning enemies at outposts wasn't much of an issue for me because I would just walk around them. if you take a look on far cry 1, 2 and 3 its fascinating that they are part of the same game series, with the 1st beeing groundbreaking in terms of not completly stupid ai and decently open maps, with some sci-fi elements becoming an over the top action movie of the 80's while the 2nd had a pretty damn good immersion with the limited hud elements(in terms of map as example), weapon tear and critical wounds(systems i really enjoyed). and the fire. damn how often did I trap myself in the fire I caused myself. also it gave the player a lot of freedom how to approach targets and the buddy system gave some interesting characters that somehow felt like more then adrenalin junkys. the big bad enemy the game gave you early was interesting while not beeing batshit crazy. but some things were also damn annoying, the quests always led you to the other side of the map and you had to cross all the outposts which clearly was just a way to prolong the game without using ressources for bigger missions but the missions itself were pretty good in my opinion, specially with the alternativ targets you could complete.
    far cry 3 on the other hand was a lot more arcade, but the way the main character changed and became a jungle warrior was pretty well layed out with the skill system you could see on your arms. but i'd prefere if it had less qualitiy of life features like wallhack marking enemys etc, but it was still a fun game to play through

    I started playing a couple of days ago, I've completed 20% of the main storyline and I have absolutely no idea what the story is about, how the world works, what's the point of the missions I've done - I don't even know how I'm progressing the main storyline, I only notice when the percentage goes up but I have no idea what happened and how the story moved forward. And the worst part is that the game doesn't give you a reason to care about any of that, 90% of the time I'm just staring at the map trying to figure out how to get wherever the hell I need to go even though I have no idea why I'm even going there.
    Who am I serving? I don't know - and I don't care.
    How do I meet new buddies? I don't know - and I don't care.
    What are the buddies even good for? I don't know - and I don't care.
    What do I get by purchasing weapon crates? I don't know - and I don't care.
    Why is my gun jamming even though I purchased it? Is it because it's gotten old, or I accidentally swapped it for a second-hand one, how do I get a new one that doesn't jam? I don't know - and I don't care, I'll just press that R button and soldier on.
    The game just doesn't give you a reason to care about anything or to explore any new locations or learn the mechanics of the world. Hell, I don't even care about my own character! Yeah, Jack Carver (or whatever) in FC1 was cheesy af but at least I knew who he was, what he was doing, what his character was like, etc. Elder Scrolls games for example allow you to "give character to your character" by giving you options to play in different ways by joining different factions and guilds - you can be an assassin, a thief, a warrior, xenophobic, racist, imperialist, multiculturalist, etc. you can choose what kind of person you want your character to be. In FC2 you're a nobody, you never speak, you don't know where you are, what you're doing or why you're doing it.

      Story wise, you are an agent sent to Kill Jack Carver AKA Jackal from the first game for the exact same reason as the first game. You as the player character is an outsider trapped in a country in the midst of a civil war where nobody is the good guy. Your "Buddies" aren't as loyal as you think they are and they (spoilers) will kill you in the end for the stash of blood diamonds you got and to settle a score that happened earlier in the game. The Jackal, the supposed antagonist of this game, is the closest thing you have as an ally because he legitimately wants you to save civilians and get out of the country before it's too late. The ending in the game is either you as the player character dying to save refugees or surviving but stuck inside the country succumbing to Malaria...

    The answer is Far Cry, and there were no other Far Cries created after that. Far Cry 2 and beyond shits on its predecessors game design and legacy and therefore does not deserve to be called far cry. The first Crysis is a truer sequel than any far cry.

    While i hate many things about this game (piss poor story, pointless friends, no real factions, respawning checkpoints, way too fast weapon degradation and the fact that on the other hand you have unlimmited supply of them at your shop, repetitive mission design, pointless alternative missions given by friend, fake malaria mechanics and so on), i have to say the combat and stealth are awesome. Stealth here is realistic, and enemies don't forget about you after a minute, also their AI is decent. Combat is balanced really well (maybe apart from a bit too short shotgun range and overpowered explosive bolts), driving mechanics are fun, physical map is great just as every other first person animation, graphics aged so good becasue of great art design, and i really like the weapon limmit and how it forces you to create certain loadouts that are never perfect. Combat is without a doubt the best in the series (every next FC game has wierd shooting mechanics and AI is horrible in latter games with enemies that behave like lemmings). Overall a decent 6-7 out of 10 game, but mostly a case of unrealised potential.
    Oh and the atmosphere is just one of a kind.

    I liked FC2 because it's one of the few games that manages to properly use a metanarrative to question the players motivation for making decisions within the game. There's a sense of confusion when you've cleared out a jungle stronghold after fighting for almost half an hour and take a look back at the burning foliage, scattered guns, blown up cars, and fading bodies. You're on your last health bar, most of your guns are broken and there's no slow-motion montage or hype music that pats you on the head for committing mass murder, against enemies that occupy the same role as you, mercenaries. It calls into question why you even went after the stronghold, was it fun? No. Did it get you some new shiny weapon? No. Did it have some narrative significance? No. Then why did you do it?
