    GB Studio has existed for a while now, way before the Analogue came out; and people have already made hundreds of games with the software. There are tons of brand new original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games coming out every single year (on physical carts). I don't know why any serious developer would use the Analogue to develop a game as the program is so much better on PC.

      @@mikematei my favorites tend to be 3d action adventure games like dark souls/bloodborne/demon's souls, sekiro, nier automata. also a fan of metroidvanias, you might like blasphemous? it has that retro sprite look and it's super fun and just difficult enough imo. there are also some fairly linear hack and slash games like bayonetta 2 or devil may cry 5 that look amazing and are super fun beat-em-ups.
      also have you played returnal? super fun and fast paced 3rd person shooter for ps5, roguelike, and uses the new adaptive trigger and haptic feedback stuff on the ps5 controller the best i've played so far. made me really feel like i was playing a next gen game and that the console purchase was worth it. binding of isaac is another super fun roguelike but the aesthetic of it kinda bugs me.

    I think the electrons moving through reality thing became a meme because the sentence is just funny but Ryan isn’t really wrong.
    That being said a program in an OS running on a graphics card/CPU is still a electrons through reality there are just more layers of abstraction. Engineers usually use the colloquialism “closer to the metal” for assembly language which…idk I’m just a script kiddy who went to art school essentially but I assume it applies to FPGA to a certain degree. I think the reality is the “true” experience is whatever makes it more real for you. That could be playing on a CRT, with a first party controller, on as big an LED screen as possible, or on the train going to work….for example when they figured out CPS3 emulation it was the first time I got to really dig into SF3 so that is the memory that is the “realest” for me…
    If I have a point it is that emulation is a real engineering feat, even if it was not accurate all the time…many people were working with like…here-say they read on a forum or a manual that fell out of a turnip truck at Nintendo. I think the denigration of emulation is kind of nullifying that work, and although technically not legal it was the first time many people (like me) were able to play many lesser known games, it was the first way I found or got to play stuff like Garou Mark of the Wolves.
    Not trying to be adversarial but I do think the notion that emulation = bad (and therefore FPGA = good) is not super accurate with many older consoles/pieces of software. The super exciting space is being able to do stuff like create new hardware. I forget what it was called but someone made something that allowed you to play CD quality sound on the SNES and it was through an FX-like chip that was made with an FPGA

    Mike is 100% spot on that Ryan will regret selling his games should he choose to do so. Years back when I was in college and had no money at all, I sold my collection of almost 60-70 N64 games for about $350 dollars to Digital Press. I had some pretty valuable games like Conker, Mario Party 3, Paper Mario, Harvest Moon 64 as well all of the classics. Even when I was counting the money, I instantly knew that I would come to regret it.

    MiSTer is great.
    I used to have all my consoles hooked up to a couple CRT with couple SCART switch boxes.
    But since building my MiSTer I've put the consoles away, and just play on that on a Trinitron or larger monitor for Tate mode play.
    I'd like to get this Pocket at sometime, when more easily available in 2023 or whenever. Hopefully some more cores for it by then too.
    MiSTer is a great space saver for me though, and I can't notice any difference to playing on original hardware myself.
    Reckon Mike will be enjoying that a lot once finished his build, and got some SNAC adapters

    FPGA is more Simulted than Emulated. Mimics the hardware and fixes the lag issues. Yes I use the Retron 3, but it actually works good for SNES and Genesis. If they come out with an FPGA N64 I'm on board.

    @6:29 Well emulation is actually pretty awesome. If one plays retro rpgs with bugs and balancing issues or censored graphics and dialogue then emulation is the only way to play patched rebalanced and uncensored versions of those games. Granted I can totally see what you guys mean about lag and sound issues. I'd just love to have a rebalanced uncensored bug fixed version of my favorite games with no lag or sound issues on a tv.

    • @TheSaturnMan
      @TheSaturnMan Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah I'm also happy with emulation. I think if you're playing classic games regularly having a more authentic setup is great, but using something like Retroarch with CRT Royale and frame slipping to reduce lag will be a more reasonable solution for many.

    I believe that quantum mechanics shows us that electrons do not, in fact, move through reality. They only have a physical location when measured. Therefore, the natural state of an electron is it's existence as a probability wave, and this wave is not a physically real object.
    Thusly, the electrons that we consider to be moving along the pathways within the Nintendo Entertainment System have no location within the experience that we call reality until a conscious observer takes a measurement of one or more of these particles.

    Listening to people try to explain FPGA to non-tech heads is fun. Don't worry too much about it, it's basically just emulating the hardware by physically changing instead of software emulation which is your computer reading software (the game) and executing totally different commands that approximate a result instead. Idk why I tried too lol. That said this is the best Analogue product they've released, and the best price.

    • @Artimidorus
      @Artimidorus Před 2 lety

      Yeah, even with the price jump for the last orders. That they actually opened the orders back up due to demand was great. While I foolishly missed the first posting, due to being at work and it being sold out right away, I'll still happily wait until 2023 to get it even if I had to pay more.

  • @EgaoKage
    @EgaoKage Před 2 lety

    Another nice thing about Everdrives, is that you can use IPS patches on your ROMs; to legally apply hacks or translations to them. So if you buy a physical copy of FF5 for SFC, and dump your ROM to a file-system; you can then patch it with an English translation and play your own ROM, _which came from your own physical copy of SFC-FF5,_ on a real console. Which is another good reason to _never_ liquidate your physical game collection, if you can help it. Those carts are essentially an extremely durable "ROM Archive"; far more durable than any form of storage you probably have on your computer. Because even if certain components on a cart's board die, the chip that contains the ROM itself will last a very long time; many human lifetimes.
    On a side-note, it always seems like (non-FPGA) hardware-clones get left out of the conversation. And I'm not talking about emulation machines, like the various Retrobits or Retrons. These are essentially reproductions of original consoles. Under a hundred bucks can get you an NES-clone and an SNES-clone, which run exactly the same as the originals did; zero lag; with the option of HDMI-out (as well as the original outputs). I just mention this option because, if a person wants to dip their toe into retro gaming, on real hardware, but doesn't feel comfortable dropping 500 bucks on something they aren't sure if they're even going to like, the basic hardware-clones are not a bad starting point. Just seems like they get forgotten about.
