Age, gender, and even ethnic bias against health care providers is so sad. Hopefully things will change in this country for the better.

1. Be very careful of the information you put out. I’m speaking to the moments where you said “Here in Gainesville” if I’m not mistaken. Then you mentioned that the hospital was 3-6 minutes away. There are some crazy people in this world so pleaseee be careful.
I found your channel tonight and I’m loving it!!! Your energy is so pure and infectious. Continue to be great at what you do. People will say things to get to you in terms of your ability to care for them or the fact that you’re a strong deserving black woman, but remember that people do not define who you are. I am thankful for all the lives you’ve either saved or preserved in any way! 😇🌻

I just wanna say this:
You Don't have to explain or prove anything to anyone, the people who know you already know that you are a Smart and diligent Doctor.
As a Nigerian living in Nigeria, I have never experienced such before but through social media I have seen and know that Doctors of color and other races do experience this at some point in their life.
I know “rising above” the situation may be warranted to maintain workflow and professionalism but sometimes i just wish the patients could be set straight and some sense could be knocked into their heads but one thing I know is that physicians should also have the right to work without being targets for verbal abuse, threat, and intimidation based on race, gender or religion.
So my dear, do you girl, be diligent in what you do and know that you are loved and supported❤

The hospital I used to go to was a training hospital. So you know a lot of the doctors are very young, right out of medical school. Some people do just like more mature looking doctors. As long as you listen to me and seem knowledgeable and also ask me questions I don’t care how young you look. You are obviously qualified because you are there. So proud of you!!

I’m sorry sis but you do look 17 lol. I get it though, I’m in my 30s and have always looked and sounded 14 so I get how annoying it can be. My mom always says it’s a good thing bc when I am really old I’ll still look youthful🤷🏾♀️. So proud that you are able to take it all in stride bc there have def been times where I have popped off out of frustration🤦🏾♀️ keep shining mama🙌🏾🙏🏾👏🏾

I've lived in south Florida most my life and you could not pay enough to relocate to any part of central Florida. I always fill up my gas tank just to avoid stopping in that area during long drives. I feel much safer in the hoods of Miami then I do in any part of central Florida.

I get asked all the time about my citizenship due to me being Jamaican descent and it’s rather annoying when people ask me if I have a green card or not.
That’s so intrusive.

7:18 I would not have answered that question. To even entertain that comment gives the patient a false security that he has the right to ask you other non-medical questions that do not pertain to his acute care stay. I would have politely ignored the question by asking “sir is anything else you would like me to inform you about your condition or medical status thus far during your stay” I also work in the acute care section of my hospital and I feel by keeping all questions geared towards the patient, hospital, and or any other services the patient may need outside the hospital is the best way to stay professional

awwww! Sickle Cell crisis. i just got out of the hospital not too long ago due to a SCD crisis. i’m glad she had you as a doctor! it’s always great when we see nurses, doctors, + other medical professionals that look like us. (sometimes they can be worse than those who don’t)
but more often than not, it’s comforting to have MedPros that won’t judge us or make assumptions, think we’re drug seeking, faking, in less pain than we’re in b|c our pain looks different than those w|o painful chronic illnesses, etc.
it’s funny, when you were describing your ER experience that night + you said not too busy, not too slow, that’s exactly how my last experience was (except i was the patient LOL) + i wondered if you saw any SCD patients, then like 12 seconds later you said you had + my lil hard-working heart fluttered. LOLOL🤣

Unfortunately that question doesn’t surprise me here in Gainesville. As an RN I’ve had some mind blowing questions come my way. Keep letting them know that you belong. Aliyah B. There’s currently zero interest on federal student loans due to COVID so I’m deferring for now. Plan is to aggressively pay off loans once I become an attending. Lots of residents do the income driven repayment plan tho.

I can understand patients asking about age because they are concerned about experience. That is actually a valid concern even though it feels insulting when it happens. I experienced that as a young nurse as well.
I however had some racist patients that would accept meds from the white housekeeper (literally) before they would from me. The housekeeper knew what was going on and would come in to “assist”.
Wow, that’s so unfortunate that that happened.
I thought she was a RN until I saw the MD. Very cool. Normally I see RNs post videos. It’s very interesting to get a small inside look of a doctor’s life.

I was in the ER department at Kaiser Hospital Santa Clara, California recently as my elderly dad was having cardiac symptoms. I noticed there’s so many people who just walk into the ER because their elbow hurts or they just have an upset stomach or sniffles. A lot of them seemed really unhealthy and they’re carrying sodas n McDonald’s bags and their obese but, they want the ER to fix everything when they should be taking better care of themselves self. Also they could be make an appointment during the week instead of coming in and whining about small things and taking up the ER staff’s time.
Yeah unfortunately a lot of people use the ER as primary care or as an urgent care. This is often because of a lack of insurance. There’s a lot that needs to be fixed with the healthcare system

Omg girl. I work in a really small town in Australia in pathology. The town is a population of 2000 people and I’m literally the one of the two coloured people in the town! I hear so much subtle racist comments here and there including my own co workers. It is def unnecessary and it’s not helping anyone, often times it makes me feel more of an outsider. Selfishly, Seeing someone else go through this makes me feel a tiny bit better 😅😅. You go girl, look at us defying the odds !!
Oh wow. I had a coworker who was constantly asked about her citizenship, as if she wasn't worthy of working with the clients. It's so rude. I'm sorry you encountered such ignorance.
Must haves for the night shift crew: black out curtains, melatonin, eat only a light snack at night keep real meals for when the sun is up, take a second nap in the evening before your shift, and still keep your night shift lifestyle during the days your not working night shift. This will help you stay healthy, sane and not gain weight.

Hi! I have been following your channel for a while now. I have a question. My daughter can’t decide if she wants to become a doctor or not. She really loves medicine so much and she’s very smart and compassionate so all her teachers feel that she could be a very good doctor. The only thing that kind of discourages her is the exhaustion and the sparse free time. So how do you manage that all? Are there any specialities you don’t recommend because of how time consuming they are (like how OB/GYN can call you in anytime)?
Rosalyn Gummer not a doctor but I’m a nurse. Obgyn, emergency medicine, and general surgeon lifestyle can be rough hours. Some of the more manageable specialties can be family medicine, ENT, urology. Hospitalists/internal medicine work in hospitals are typically 1 week on, 1 week off, etc. being a doctor regardless can be tiring but worth the payoff! Physician assistants may have more manageable hours and not have to be on call as much. Plus they can do any specialty and have the flexibility to switch specialties if they want to
Essentially, once you’re done with training and become an Attending, you have the flexibility to work as much or as little as you want and there’s a lot of autonomy when choosing your schedule. Some ER attendings only work 10-12 shifts a month and that’s considered full time.
During training (Med school and resideny), the journey is long and tough. There is limited free time but time management and planning ahead allows you to still enjoy life. I don’t feel like my life has been put on hold through my years of training. I still continue to travel and enjoy life.
But there are definitely sacrifices that are made.

What is the "professional" response when a patient asks how old you are?
That’s a good question that I’m still figuring out how to answer.
I think my reply would be, "I'm old enough"....said with a smile.
Give your age in minutes, “I’ve been alive for ....minutes” then I watch them try and do the math. They often don’t try and bother and I just smile and don’t facilitate.
Do you find you get more elderly patients being in the "retirement capital" Florida?
Nope. Good mix of all ages.

A woman asked to see my passport or green card before she would allow me touch her. I asked her a question back if she carries her documents with her all the time.she assumed I’m an illegal immigrant and wanted to call the cops. I told her i will call them instead cos she abused me.then she started talking nice. She’s never gonna forget how i treated her back🙄🙄🙄.

Sometimes it is not about race. Sometimes people are just curious because there are so many countries that Africa Americans can come from. Jamaica, Africa, Congo, Kenya, Sudan. etc., They could be here for overseas studying, or they immigrated here because they wanted a better life. They could've met their spouse here and decided to stay or vice versa, met their spouse overseas, fell in love. You have to remember that is how most veterans met their spouses was overseas during the wars and they moved here to be with them. And sometimes, it is natural to be curious about another person's heritage and asking questions or watching videos is how many people access that information without being unfairly labeled as a racist. Never assume that you know the intention of one's question because he also could've just been trying to break the ice to initiate a conversation? Like I said many reasons so don't take offense. Just like I don't when people ask me about my heritage. I will answer their question of what I know and leave it at that.
So keep you head up and don't let their negativity for those who are, spread to your heart and stay true to being you and not allow them to change who you are inside.
And there is a reason for them to want to know your visa status? How about they just keep the interaction professional. He could have asked and when she said where she's from he'll just say okay but he just had to go further.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking where someone is from. I embrace that conversation. The issue is asking someone’s legal status. What does that provide to the conversation? Why are you inquiring? What value does that add to the convo?
