Growing up I was Christian but became atheist in high school . I joined the military in my 20s and was a meathead with anger issues who loved to drink , party, sleep around and fight. When I ended up stationed over seas in Guam and I was a corpsman working in General surgery/OR , trauma team and occasional morgue duty . I saw a lot of trauma and death and mentally it was becoming a lot and I was having a crisis . I tried talking ti different religions but they just said to pray or they’ll pray for me which isn’t helpful and they didn’t want me asking certain questions .
One day I found a Buddhist temple there and my roommate and I checked it out . The first visit and they were immediately so welcoming . The first monk we encountered only spoke mandarin so they grabbed someone else to talk to us about Buddhism , the temple etc and they had us eat lunch with them . We started going more and more because they were so welcoming and because they said “you don’t need to be Buddhist to come here , all are welcome . If you ever need a place to pray , mediate , eat or just a quiet place to think our doors are always open, no questions asked .” And as time went on my roommate and I started going to the services even and since they were in mandarin they had a translator just for the two of us . That temple changed my life forever as it got me more and more into Buddhism and practicing it . What really clicked with me was that they didn’t get angry when I asked difficult questions about it , they were always so happy whenever I had questions and always encouraged me to question the teachings they taught me . I also really liked that Buddhism is all about personal accountability with how only you can save yourself .
That was back in 2016 when I first found Buddhism and there’s been many trials and tribulations since but learning how to walk the path has been liberating. I’ve since left the military, deleted all my social media accounts, became a pacifist, have been sober for years , became vegetarian and other changes. Buddhism has changed my life in so many ways and made me a much more mindful , open and present individual. I still have much to learn but learning is a process I’ve truly come to love .

Cheers bud. Seems that you have took on the teachings well.
Buddhism mentioned that one can cultivate anywhere, anytime. Needs no temple, for you are your own temple. Hold oneself accountable to your own deeds, do more good, build good karma.
For one will be judged, by your own deeds, redeemed by your own karma, responsible for every action.
Do good at own pace, follow your own heart, embrace things that comes to us. Experience, digest it, allow compassion to grow, and learn to walk away, may that be good or bad. Not subjecting oneself to be overly tied down by earthly desires, that will hinder your own journey forward.

That means God, to Buddhists, can never speak to us from outside ourselves... and is confined to what people want. Buddhists want no God and will discover at death what has been true all along. Gautama Buddha did not speak of gods, because India was soaked in them and it was a problem then. He did not deny God, but gave us tools to work with. But having denied Christ, and Muhammad etc, they became a sink for atheists.

I don't even need to change into Buddhism, heck I even changed out of Buddhism but still using some tools within the framework to have a better life. The true liberation is within your soul and not from any external validation. Well at least this is what I've got after immense suffering in mortal life for over 20 years. Now I'm living in more ascetic life but not true ascetic. I'm refraining from doing things because I perceived them as potentially dangerous and not because I'm restricting myself from doing so. It's vastly different from ascetics and much more liberating than any of them. Maybe that's why I won't become a monk. By being a monk, people will put on shackles which forced you to live in restricted life than allowed you to use the teachings to liberate yourself.

The Buddha never said whether God exists or not. The Buddha taught that believing or not believing in the existence of God is not the path to liberation. Everything is subject to change. We ourselves change. There are encounters and departures, births and decay. Clinging to anything unstable is suffering. The Buddha's path is to train the mind to be constantly aware of change and to understand the reality of emptiness.

      “God”
God is spirit. (A vital principle held to give life to physical organisms ).
God created man in His own image.
(The image of God consisted in the soul of man, was given free will to choose right and wrong )
God made man from the dust of the earth.
(The human body is made up of water, H2O, with cealls consisting of 75% water by weight, most of a human body's mass is oxygen. Carbon, the basic unit for organic molecules comes in second.)
      Sin separate us from God.
( Sin is the breaking of God's law, God is holy and we are sinful and separated from Him.)
The Lord God comes in human Form.
      john 14:6,14:10, 10:38
I am in the Father, and the Father in me. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.John 10:30
Jesus died for our sin but 3 days later He rose from the dead, revealed to the world that He’s the true God.
God took on human form(Jesus) to lead & guide our way back to him, have faith and you soul will be safe.
Your eternal soul is the most valuable thing you possess.
You have a body, but living inside of you is your spirit/soul. And when a person dies, what happens! The soul goes on.
First, it's valuable because it's eternal. It's going to live forever, millions years from now, our soul will be living.
The body is the house, the soul is the tenant. But when the body dies, the soul lives on.The good news is that God offers eternal life to everyone.

To the general layman, blind faith in God/any deity (with its accompanying eternal salvation) is so much more convenient than diligent and persevering cultivation (e. g. understanding the 4 Noble Truths, upholding the 8 Right Pathways...). There are no otherworldly aspects to it. It is entirely secular. Buddhism may be nontheistic, but it does have a belief system, that is something they believe in that cannot be proven. That is their belief in reincarnation. There is no evidence that happens, and it can lead to outcomes that western philosophy find hard to comprehend or justify.

We ourselves change. There are encounters and departures, births and decay. Clinging to anything unstable is suffering. The Buddha's path is to train the mind to be constantly aware of change and to understand the reality of emptiness. When you are happy, understand that it will not last long. When something exist it's counter part also come to existence. For example, left - right, up - down, day - night, birth - death, cold - hot etc.. if you remove one, it's counter part also ceased to exist. Think about a world there is no left side, then you will never talk about its counter part (right side). Same thing can be applied to things in your mind, happiness - sadness, love - hate, past - future. If you are a person that looking for happiness, that means you are in sadness. In fact they are the same thing because one cannot exist without the other. If you can let go both of them your mind will be in a neutral state which is called Niravana. When you realized this dualism, you mind is in middle path(third state), and you stop arguing or fighting for one side.
Most important part is how you make your mind neutralized, in fact it's when you realized that sadness - happiness, love - hate are the same thing, because when something disappear and it counter part ceased to exist, it means they are the same thing. Think about a world where there is no sadness then it will be world where we never talk about happiness.

It's liberation from Samsara, the eternal cycle of existence where a soul goes through Birth, Death, Rebirth, Happiness and Suffering, until the soul realizes its true self, its true nature, and liberates itself from this endless cycle by shedding all of its Karma, both good and bad Karma.

Here are some thoughts that I believe the Buddha would say if here today. All wisdom comes from experience but not all experience leads to the truth. Buddha saw in his day many philosophies and many teachings of others he encountered on his journeys. However, he noticed one very important thing and that is that these philosophies or teachings did not all agree. So his question was how could a person know especially in the absence of divine proof?
This is where I think Buddha separated himself from a belief in divine worship. To him the most tangible evidence for truth came from his own experiences and his own inner thoughts. I think he believed that he and everyone else, had by default, the ability to truly discover and recognize truth, but it had to come from within. He felt that a belief based on the belief of others was not to be trusted.
I totally agree with this even though I personally believe in a higher power. If Buddha never taught there was a higher power or power greater than himself, then he no doubt didn't think divinity wasn't necessary or perhaps shouldn't be necessary to explain them. I suppose he reasoned that without the Divine universally present religions of his day were more likely only teaching some person's views and not God's. Hence trust your own instincts rather than trust another.
Very practical thinking I must admit

I was born into a Buddhism family in Asia. After decades of being a Buddhist, I became a Christian. Though I’m now a Christian, I still practice certain Buddhist teachings as I’m more of a science and space guy.
In your point, there’s 2 that I find it disappointing and that’s one of those reasons I left Buddhism.
    1. Cause and effect karma that not only affects the current life but beyond to the next (if it exists). I find this is too cruel and unfair for the next life. The next life should be clean and pure without any benefit or burden. Not bearing what you sow in this life.
So if you were to say, when you kill or drug trafficking in this life, you bear the suffering in the next life when your karma is not complete in this?
So if you do well and lots of goodness in this life, you’ll live like a king in the next life?
Yes, some may say that those who born into rich families are those who did good karma in the previous life. Does that mean that those who’s born into poor families does bad karma in the past life?
Looking into history of the world, how much percentage are those who did bad deeds such as kill, drugs, human trafficking, etc? Now how much percentage in our world now are in poverty? Rich and well to do families only stands around 30% of this world (that includes those who made their wealth by doing bad deeds).
    2. Meditations to search for the truth and enhance one self.
How many people in this world now had that extra time to meditate for hours? Even the shortest time for self enlightenment takes more than 30mins to be in sync. Those who said that they can do below that are self deceiving.
8 hours of work, I hours of sleep, 3-4 hours of meals and daily routines, 3-4 hours of housework and any other tasks such as handling kids.
We need at least 28 hours a day to include meditation which non of us have unless you’re living on Mars.
Buddha and his followers in the past have that luxury as they’re not bound by so much stuff that we have now. They don’t need to report to bosses or clock in and out for work, they not need to travel far to work, they don’t really need to worry about children’s education or school stuff, they don’t really do a lot of household work as their houses are simple and not much to clean.
Just my 2 cents of thought.

I'm Thai who studied Buddhism in university and has been a monk for 3 months. What I learn is Buddha's way is trying to get out of the law of cause and effect by living a life with no footprints so you don't have to be born again to receive consequences of what you've done before this was reflected in monk rule. And there's a almighty god but these god can't overcome the law of cause and effect too and even them subject to change just like a position of CEO in a company so you can praise your CEO for bonus but that doesn't mean you don't have to work anymore and for CEO when he help someone it mean he hurt someone just like how Mosaic get help while the Egypt get hurt.

Regarding Japanese Buddhism and all things Japanese, one of my all time favorite writers is Lafcadio Hearn, whose Japanese name was Koizumi Yakumo. He first came to Japan during the Meiji era in the nineteenth century to teach English, then fell in love with the country and wound up marrying a Japanese woman from a noble samurai family and being adopted into that family. Perhaps his most famous book is Kwaidan, a collection of spooky Japanese ghost stories. In his book In Ghostly Japan, he tells another Buddhist parable: A spiritual seeker is being led up a mountain by a Bodhisattva in the dark and gloomy morning twilight, and as he climbs, being led ever upward, he hears strange hollow rattling noises as objects, like stones roll and tumble downwards. As the day starts to dawn, he begins to make out their eye and nose sockets, and comes to the frightening realization that he is climbing a mountain of skulls. He tells the Bodhisattva that he is too terrified to go on any further, but the Bodhisattva tells him that quitting is not an option. When the seeker asks the Bodhisattva why they are climbing this terrible mountain of skulls, the Bodhisattva tells him that the skulls are not just any old skulls, but all of them belonged to the seeker himself in previous lifetimes, and that each was, at some point in his karmic past, the nest of his own foolish delusions, dreams and desires. Yikes!!!
