  • In this episode of Signature Shots, ESPN analyst Kirk Goldsberry begins by reliving the NBA's greatest midrange moments featuring Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Chris Paul (0:40). Goldsberry explains Kawhi Leonard's development as a jump shooter (1:36), the efficiency of Leonard's midrange pull-up (2:22), the fall of the midrange game in the NBA (3:32), how Kawhi pulls off the shot (4:17) and then dives in on that iconic Game 7 winner against the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2019 Eastern Conference semifinals (4:59).

G C that wasn’t his point though. His point was that a lot of players would force themselves into the paint for a contested layup when they would have an open mid range jumper. If they don’t take the 3, they try and go into the paint for a layup when a lot of times they would have an open mid range jumpshot

Give Chip Engelland his props, the best shooting coach in the league, transformed Kawhi offensive game. The years in San Antonio made Kawhi the best in the league, even the efficiency with which he plays. In San Antonio rookies don’t average 15 FGA like other teams do, you learn the game, earn your spot in the lineup for defense, getting your points off cuts and open court, all the while training
and developing your offensive game, after a handful of years you start to assume more offensive responsibility and even then you only take open shots until you’re bonafide shooter than can create for yourself, then the offense starts to evolve around you. That’s the path Kawhi took and that’s the path Dejounte Murray is on, probably won’t be Kawhi good but his defense is elite for a guard and his offense is slowly catching up. He even signed with New Balance. Mini Kawhi

Kawhi Leonard has a lot of similarities with MJ. The scoring, the mid-range, the fadeaways, the exceptional defense, the leadership, the clutchness, the ability to step up in big moments/playoffs, even the one-handed fake. Kawhi does it as well at times. The difference between the two is that MJ was a better passer, more dominant player/athlete, faster, more aggresive and athletic and simply a better player overall from the eye test and the resume. Kawhi is the better shooter though, both from the 3PT line & the FT line.

You mix having the ability to square up after faking a move to the left or right and fading on occasion makes it way more difficult to stop or shadow. That's why these guys are so successful. Taking higher percentage shots instead of inside instead of 3 pointers while having the ability to shoot 3's is deadly.
