The water molecules are depicted as one big circle with two smaller circles attached indicating its composition of two hydrogen and one oxygen atom for each water molecule. The "air molecules" on the other hand are depicted as simple circles, but neither Nitrogen nor Oxygen nor Carbondioxid nor most of the other particles that makes up air consists of only a single atom. At least that is what he means with "error". I don't agree though. I think the purpose is to distinct air from water, which works fine imho.
Treufuß That's cleared up a bit, i thought there's something more serious about that. imo it works just fine, and if the air were depict as their actual molecule, it will be rather confusing.
Urea is also in your sweat, too, not just urine. So remember: whenever you're sweating, you're technically covered in pee. You're welcome! :D (and so was the wetsuit)
If you get into The Sea you most probably are touched by fish, seagull and seal pee and poo in some quantity. You can shower after anyway and put the wetsuit into the washing machine every now and then.
I did some water survival training that explored this concept. We were in a cold pool that simulated being stuck at sea. We put opened normal trash bags and pulled them over our feet and tucked ourselves in with our heads and floatation devices above the surface of the water. Our bodies heat the water around us like you said. They are always heating this water. But the open water moves so the water we just heated is no longer next to us. When we isolate the heated water next to our body, it does keep us warm. Also, piss like that one guy said.
No, that’s nonsense. A layer of water cannot keep you warm. Water is a good conductor of heat. This video is wrong - see my post above. All insulators that I’m aware of use gases, normal air, or a vacuum. Water is far too dense to insulate.
hope you read this. It's been amazing to watchOlivia during the episodes. An amazing change and it is fun to watch. She seem much more relaxed and natural now. keep up the good work :D
cant do anything about her accent but at least she reduced that cow ring and shampooed the messy hair all in all she improved and looks presentable, a little less hippy a little more i didnt wake up amd put on what was on the floor
I have a bit more to add to this. The reason neoprene is chosen is for its thermal diffusivity instead of its thermal conductivity. Thermal diffusivity has to do with how long it takes transient heat to move through the material. This is why you use charts with wetsuits to determine how long you can be in the water if the water is at a certain temperature. As opposed to a house insulation, which is chosen for thermal conductivity which limits steady state heat flow. Both of these are methods of limiting conductive heat flow. The metal layer in some suits would be for limiting radiation heat flow, but wouldn't help limit the conductive heat flow. I don't think radiation heat flow is as affected by transient states as conductive heat flow, so that part probably doesn't need to be factored in.
Hey Olivia, thanks for presenting this topic! I'm not a diver, and I already knew in principle how this works. Though I learned something new: the heat-reflecting metal layer. Sure that makes sense, like these rescue plastic film blankets (don't know how they're actually named in English) work. Also, I'd like to state there's nothing wrong with how you present a topic. That's your show, your rules, so don't give much on hater's opinions. You're doing it great as a host, and I really appreciate the work of your whole team. It's great work!
jbglaw the other day i found there are blankets for dogs with a metal layer or two inside too, one to isolate the dog from the ground and the upper one to reflect its heat back to his body for when they sleep in a cold floor. I guess there is something similar for camping beds.
That's a general pacific northwest accent. Basically the Portland, Seattle, Missoula triangle area. I have it really bad. Phrases like "You could maybe be supportive? Be a friend?" Stuff like that, are normal vernacular, when saying it as a statement is just as good (and sometimes better). [My linguistics professor in undergrad used to chew me out for it all the time because he came from England and he hated it.]
AndroidDoctorr I just (perhaps dickishly) brought that up myself. It's like, I don't know why? It makes folk sound stupid? Like airheads? As if we should know? Science and stuff? ;-)
that's what the internet does. Its the age of triviality. Trivial information that no one needs, discarded after a moment's use. No knowledge is too sacred, too important. It is a continuation of the television's "Now...this" newscasts where the information of a possible nuclear war is succeeded by a commercial of burger king.
pramitbanerjee well you are right somehow but if the information you get from internet is not relevant is more one's fault because you click on it to see it. And if you can not find something personally relevant to learn in 2017's internet, most probably you need to find what you want out of life first.
its my choice to reply to your post. But its also your fault to write your post in a manner which requires me to reply to it. Because you missed the point entirely. I don't argue for the individual, i argue for the collective, whose patterns are much easier to identify.
pramitbanerjee what? I just pointed that 1) internet, unlike tv, is interactive. the user always chooses what to see or not. it's not like it's bombarding you with information you didnt ask, not all the time. 2) it's full of useful content today. you can learn almost anything from your screen. I was not trying to insult you really. The problem is many people dont know how to use internet. They dont bother sesrching and conparing sources, asking the proper questions, or orgaqnizing their online time (that's me).
I really enjoy this host! Olivia Gordon is an excellent person to have on the channel. Great speaking voice, obviously extremely intelligent, likable, respectable, informative, etc. Keep her on the channel, SciShow, please! :)
I once tried swimming in deep ocean without a swimsuit and almost got hypothermia, the next day I asked for one and holy, you really notice the difference.
Yeah the animation of heat transfer was also wrong. As molecules on the each side change energy state, the overall effect tends to be a uniform energy distribution, not a slow transfer of the red band as shown.
All these people hating on Olivia are doing it in the wrong way. You can be constructive without being hurtful. IMO I don't like the sound of her voice and her presenting style. That doesn't mean other people aren't ok with it. Follow you talents Olivia, but IMO speaking for a science CZcams channel isn't one of them.

Pedro Rocha you have to take that information in context. And on another note, air will cool an object down to the same temperature that water would if they are the same temperature. I'll be back to watch how warmsuits keep me wet.
hole - 1st drill press channel they preserve heat, so they make you sweat, making you wet.
hole - 1st drill press channel
Warmsuits increase your baseline sexiness. Once hormones kick in, wetness follows.
So, sweating in a sweater.
Try wear a sweater in Tropical country in sunny day. There you have it! Sweatsuit!
Leon Fook hoi
Why do I shiver after I pee
🍤 interesting
prostate stimulation
I bleed whenever I pee and it feels like hot needles coming out...
Uninsulated Shrimp Since the pee is so hot you let out a significant amount of "warmth" so your body shivers to recover it :)
Yanga Attempts but for me it's only a cheeky 2 second shiver. Not like a 30 second demon possessing shiver/convulsion to increase body heat
Animation of air and water molecules has many errors. SciShow should do better.
It's enough for what they're trying to say, scientists are lazy you know
It spontaneously transfers heat energy.
For example? Can't really detect the error myself.(not a scientist nor has vast knowledge of science)

Fun fact, if you decide to pee in a wet suit, the pee might dissapear, the smell however....
Charr
I've overcome that by peeing in other people's wetsuits.
I don't think I've ever smelled a wetsuit outside of a store that didn't smell like piss.
Urea is also in your sweat, too, not just urine. So remember: whenever you're sweating, you're technically covered in pee. You're welcome! :D (and so was the wetsuit)
Extra Ampersand lol any one who has worn a wetsuit any amount of time is complelty comfortable being covered in thier own pee
If you get into The Sea you most probably are touched by fish, seagull and seal pee and poo in some quantity. You can shower after anyway and put the wetsuit into the washing machine every now and then.
man, she is much better than she used to do. I like her now... she's not as good as Michael, but still pretty good

Agreed, she has really turned her look around, and looks/talks/behaves much more professional than her first and second video.
her voice cracks in the end of sentences. Liiiiike briiiitttnayyyyy spearssssssssss
Yeah, she has that annoying Millennial way of speaking where voice voice goes low at first and HIGH at the end.

Thanks Olivia.

Most surf brands use hydrophobic thermal materials on the inside of most suits. makes the surfer much warmer

I said this same exact thing to Ashley on The Know and everyone was very supporting and agreed. X-D
you are the man Olivia!
Anybody notice how at the end of EVERY DAMN SENTENCE SHE MAKES THE DAMN UGHHH noice XD sounds like a damn frog 🐸
All the things I'm interested in she narrates 😭 her voice just grates on my nerves
I'm with you 100%
Great, divers wearing fursuits, just what we need.
How many people want to see this woman or Michael host a crash course series ? I do
I have a 5.4 mm wetsuit I use for winter surfing and let me tell you it works like a gem keeps me nice n cozy
I really enjoy this host! Olivia Gordon is an excellent person to have on the channel. Great speaking voice, obviously extremely intelligent, likable, respectable, informative, etc. Keep her on the channel, SciShow, please! :)
I would love to see surfers wearing beaver suits.
She ends every sentence with "ehn", "ehhhhhnnnnn", or "uzssss"
One day, surfing furries.
Jim Engström i think years ago somebody was trying some prototypes or something for hair-like structures help isolating from wind too.
There are already surfing furries. They just don't use fursuits.
Came into the replies to this comment expecting a bunch of anti-Furry stuff, I am pleased to see nothing of the sort

Always a pleasure to watch the Jar Jar Binks of Sci Show! 😊😊😊
Can confirm. Baggy wetsuits do not keep you warm.
Surfers will surfing in Beaver Onesies - now that'd be a funny sight! 😂
The Thumbnail Looked Like a Tooth... LOL
the thumbnail looks like a wetsuit is a weirdly shaped tooth of someone that has blue gums
Why wait for science to make a better wet suit? I'm going surfing with a bever fur suit next time. Thanks for the inspiration SciShow.
*OK she grows on u*.
*good job Olivia*.
It's always good to see Olivia as Scishow host.
Animal fur wet suits sound like a great way to encourage a curious shark to take a "bite"... Hope that's part of the testing...
I once tried swimming in deep ocean without a swimsuit and almost got hypothermia, the next day I asked for one and holy, you really notice the difference.
Keep "warm" is a big word... let's less "less cold"...
I think wetsuits are pretty incredible and genius
im sorry but i don't like her voice. it's really monotone and has the same rhythym and it goes up like she's asking a question?
Paula Salazar finally someone said it 😩
Whatever her voice is, it is NOT monotone!
get in line with all the others complaining about her
there are also dry suits.
they are for when it's even colder. yeah my parents did windsurfing in the north sea in the winter
chewbacca wetsuit. yes please!
The Greens yes
came here to read the peeing in the wetsuits comments.... not disappointed
Skin tight sopping wet onesie.... Awesome 🤣
Peeing in the suit keeps you warm, but don't try that in bed on a regular basis.
What I get from this is that soon we may have surfers who wear fursuits.
I am both ok with, and slightly concerned about this.
Thx for the video!! It really helped me with a science question 💗Keep up the great work SciShow!!
Yeah the animation of heat transfer was also wrong. As molecules on the each side change energy state, the overall effect tends to be a uniform energy distribution, not a slow transfer of the red band as shown.

1:04 that means that the ocean is cooler than space
Pedro Rocha you have to take that information in context. And on another note, air will cool an object down to the same temperature that water would if they are the same temperature. Water just does it fast. But, since your body is constantly producing heat, you will reach a lower minimum temp in water as opposed to air.
If it was beaver inspired wouldn't it be a dry suit?
thanks for changing the title. before that, I was wondering what wetsuits actually do.
If you ever gone surfing, diving, or even swimming in the ocean, you may have worn a wetsuit before?
I don't know, you're telling me or asking.
Olivia Gordon keeps me warm ;)
So the researchers are working on wet furry suits? They'll be rich fur sure.
