Kalaupapa Memories | Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox

In this special edition of Long Story Short, we recall our 2009 stay in the Kalaupapa community on Moloka‘i. Members of the dwindling population of former Hawai‘i Hansen’s Disease patients shared what it was like, many years ago, to leave their homes and families. Norbert Kaiama Palea, Elroy Makia Malo, Meli Watanuki and Clarence “Boogie” Kalihihiwa speak of isolation, loss, community, hope and renewal.

I was grateful in my lifetime to spend time with them at the settlement. Stayed there a few times for a few nights to play music for them. God Bless them ALL. 🥰♥️♥️♥️

I have read the story of the leper colony from its origins and I think it is heart breaking. Thanks for these testimonials. Kalaupapa is somehow in my heart and I hope one day I can visit it and pay her my respect. Greetings from Italy.
