It's a true story, mostly.
Her husband didn't cheat, but he enjoyed being flirted with lol.
Dolly put an end to it
She wrote it because she met a little red-headed girl with green eyes named Jolene
@@NathanBristle But the story about the bank teller is true
I like the fact that Dolly ''deals' directly with Jolene, assuming 100% that if Jolene had wanted, she would automatically have had him, without even asking the SOB if he ever wanted or not to go do it with Jolene 😂😂I just love when women assume that we , men, don't have a say in that.....in all truth, for most part, 80% would probably say ''yes'' to that offer......the part with ''crying in his sleep calling her name'' is soooo not man like ! I know, I know, it was written by a woman for a woman, so , no man has a say in that....😃😃
@@mihailfelixdumitresc There is a counter-song to this now by "Jolene", where she says she never wanted that man, even if he wanted her. And she says that Dolly - or every girl singing the song after her - should leave this cheating piece of crap, basically.
Not only does Dolly have a great voice, she is also a amazingly generous person. She's one of my favourite humans.
She is an amazing human being. She actually started Dollywood as a way to help the Appalachian artisans have an outlet for their craftwork, and ended up employing thousands who ended up losing jobs when the coal industry was attacked. She has an amazing voice and is such a big hearted person. Much love to her always.
And a great songwriter.
Yes she's an amazing business woman. And every single thing she says and does is calculated.
@@thomasmills339 Gotta love her. She really is selfaware(if thats the correct word?). In an intervju here in Sweden she said " It cost a lot of money to look this cheap".
@@justmecarter1717 she is very generous, she gives every graduate money when they receive a diploma!! She started a library "Imagination Station" bc her dad couldn't read , so every child could have books and read and I could go on and on.. she is a beautiful soul!
Dolly wrote "Jolene " and
" I Will Always Love You " in the same day. She's incredible. She won a Grammy with her collaboration, with Pentatonix on this song.
Whitney Houston made that song popular. It was featured in the movie The Bodyguard.
@@sandracox4341 The story goes that Parton played "I Will Always Love You" for Porter and then said she wanted out of her contract for his show. He agreed 'so long as I get to produce that song.'
She was a singer, song writer, musician..the total package ... she did it all
Must’ve been quite a day!.. lol..
@@kens32052 It was already a huge hit for Dolly before Whitney ever charted a single, Kiddo. 😉
Firstly, it's just a song written to entertain. Secondly, Dolly is an entertainer at heart and took liberties embellishing the story for the sake of its entertainment value. In the version I've heard her tell, it's true that a woman at the bank flirted with her husband and that he enjoyed the flirtation. But, her being very much secure in herself as well as her marriage, she simply had fun teasing him over the whole thing. So, that's the story that served as 'inspiration' for the song. It's not to be taken seriously.
Dolly Parton is one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Maximum respect for Dolly. Everything she did for literacy in Tennessee and rest of US.
Not only the USA. Her book charity works in Canada, the UK, Ireland and Australia as well.
I knew it in Tennessee but not the rest. She's pretty awesome for that.
Had to smile at Brad picturing Dolly as a square dance caller. She COULD do that but nope. She's highly respected for her song writing skills along with her singing & infectious personality.
AND her humanitarian efforts which are many. Dolly's beautiful, inside & out.💙
Dolly wrote and performed "I Will Always Love You" which she is still making money from Whitney Houston's cover of it. She wrote it for her manager/show host, Porter Wagner and performed it on his show to tell him that it was time to move on to bigger and better things for the sake of her career. Her version is softer and sweeter than Whitney's cover (although I love both versions) and definitely worth a listen. Deep rabbit hole, though. But she is also such a good person and icon, a true American treasure.
@@tkmoore6057 It was 50% of Publishing Rights. Dolly said she had family in town, all excited to go watch Elvis record it, which Col. Parker (Elvis' manager) knew. Parker tried to pull a fast one, by calling her the night before recording & demanding 50% of the Publishing Rights. She declined, but was "heartbroken" (her word). She said she doesn't know if Elvis ever knew why the deal fell through. Years later, Dolly met Priscilla, who told her Elvis loved the song, had been very disappointed he didn't get to record it & he'd even sung a few lines of it in Priscilla's ear, as they left the court house following their divorce.
BTW, she donates the royalties to a black community in Nashville
Loretta Lynn took a different tact in her funny song “You ain’t woman enough!” Dolly’s approach was more honest.
And don’t forget “Fist City”!
Yup those ol gal's weren't afraid to put it all out on the table back in the day...♡
Dolly Parton is a great songwriter.
Sad but so honest... Dolly puts her feelings and thoughts out there unfiltered, which is why she was such an amazing writer and so many of her songs so believable
Anyone who can stand up in public and say out loud "it costs a lot of money to look this cheap" gets my vote!
Seriously, I have a huge admiration for Dolly and her work. She has cranked out a HUGE number of songs, MANY of which have been covered by major stars (who tend to not mention where they got them from).
The clean pure original version of "Jolene" with a couple of guitars and Dolly's voice without electronic "enhancement" is a delight which will stop me in my tracks and I will be unavailable for the next couple of minutes.
Love Dolly Parton: she's so straight-talking it's a delight. A few decades back, she relaunched her career, having lost a load of weight, and she was touring the UK, doing the chat shows and breakfast programmes. One female presenter leaned in to her, conspiritoriously, and asked, "Dolly, you've talked a lot about losing weight recently; what's your secret?", clearly hoping to be told about some magic therapy or exclusive Hollywood clinic or something. Dolly gave her the most old-fashioned look ever and replied, "Aw honey, the secret's simple: you just gotta get your feet outta the trough..." 🤣 My mum laughed so hard at that she nearly choked, and Dolly could do no wrong in her eyes thereafter.
Obviously the White Stripes version is a must. But you owe it to yourselves to check out Dollys version slowed down. Sounds very much like Tracy Chapman 🤔
Yeah, The White Stripes version is sung with the proper angst. I love Dolly and her version, but Jack White just takes it to another level.
Yes to all this
Yup! She's an amazing song writer and singer, but unfortunately her best songs have better covers...Jolene and I Will Always Love You.
Ohhh yes, please watch the White Stripes cover!
Yeah, the White Stripes version is amazing. Although you can't beat the Dolly version at 33 rpm lol
Dolly Parton is not just a great singer, songwriter and entertainer, but also a master of the art of public persona. I imagine knowing her in private is a whole other experience. Great artist.
She is amazing. She wrote and originally recorded "I Will Always Love You" which later was a mega-hit for Whitney Houston. It would be an interesting video if you reacted to both the Dolly and Whitney versions in the same video, but please, please, please, please react to "Coat of Many Colors". It tells another true story about her life. This time it is about her childhood and a coat her Mother made for her out of a pile of rags because they were dirt poor. It will tug at your heartstrings.
Now time for the White Stripes Live at Blackpool Lights cover of Jolene! It has to be the live version!!
Dolly’s not just cute. She’s an amazing musical talent, song writer, and can SING SING!
White Stripes version of Jolene is amazing think you both would like it.
A beautiful woman, a beautiful soul, magical voice.
Amazing song; seconding everyone recommending the Jack White cover.
Yeah the Blackpool Lights live version - The White Stripes - Jolene (Official Music video)
The White Stripes are always better live!!
Believe it or not, I really like Miley Cyrus' cover of this song too.
czcams.com/video/wOwblaKmyVw/video.html
What about the fact she wrote this and the iconic "I will always love you" on the same day. Dolly has some talent!
It was a true story. Netflix has a series of short stories Dolly wrote of songs she wrote. They are a must watch and the first story is Jolene. They are amazing stories. Beautiful
When "Jolene" was first released, every female singer I saw for the next two years would sing it.
I'm generally not a fan of country, but Dolly is a national treasure, and this is an all-time song. It's heart-breakimg. I can do old-school country, like this and Willie Nelson. El Paso, by Marty Robbins, is another classic.
100%. I’m not a country fan but Dolly is an absolute saint. The great things she’s done are too numerous to try to list, but she’s just a genuinely, extremely good human being.
I like songs that tell stories, which seems to be the case in country music more often than rock music.
"I Will Always Love You," the Dolly version is awesome.
She is one classy country lady that has surpassed decades and is also a songwriter for other artists 👍
This is the concert version 👏
Dolly songs is not a rabbit hole, but rather a well that goes deep into the ground. As mentioned from others "I Will Always Love You", "9 to 5", "Coat Of Many Colors", here are some others; "Mule Skinner Blues", "Why Did You Come Here Looking Like That", "Romeo", "Blue Ridge Mountain Home", "Here You Come Again", "Two Doors Down", "Baby I'm Burning". For some sadder songs, "Me And Andy", "Down From Dover", "Bargain Store". Cannot forget "Islands In The Stream" with Kenny Rodgers.
She is truly a wonderful person and done so many wonderful things for her community. Thank you for the video!
She also wrote and recorded I will Always Love You. Covered by Whitney Houston.
Now you have to do the version by The White Stripes! I recommend the live one.
Great minds think alike, just thinking the same, white stripes made the song even better
Dolly Parton is an icon. Having Whitney Houston sing I Will Always Love You just made her a legend. She's a humanitarian and she gives generously of her time and money to many causes. I'm proud to say I've been to Dollywood and it was a blast! She's a national treasure!
Dolly was a legend king before that
Dolly did a collaboration with Pentatonix singing Jolene. Everyone was given an award for it.
Hi Brad & Lex, for a more upbeat song by Dolly try (9 to 5), it`s the theme song to a 1980 comedy film she was in. For the sound representing typewriters she used her nails !!
Dolly has a laugh and personality of gold. Top 10 woman of all time for me. Better person than most
I have had a crush on Dolly since I was a young one. Late 70s 80s. So beautiful.
Jack White actually does a pretty good cover of this song.
Love the white stripes version. So unique! Love this song so much even we ( the mojo slide) cover it!
dolly parton says his cover is her favorite cover of jolene she had ever heard
Yes! I just came on here to say the same thing!!
Mily Cyrus does a good version too.
Lil Nas X just released a cover of this last month and it was pretty good.
Love is Like a Butterfly really captures the beauty that is her voice. Dolly Parton is a true working class hero. The charity work she does is amazing.
Dolly is such a treasure and so is this performance. Wise up, Brad.
Another vote for Jack White's cover version. Much angrier than the pleading Dolly Parton original.
Both artists are great. Jack White has a lot of guts to pull it off and sounds amazing.
I always thought he sang it with more anguish, not anger. Dolly's feels like more of a conversation with less emotion.
If they do reaction of this i just hope its this one czcams.com/video/yXlULkwhgrc/video.html :D
@@TwistedErrors I keep going back to their Boston 2003 show; never been able to find video, but the audio is great - czcams.com/video/laz7g31n6hc/video.html
Dolly Parton is a real singer-song writer. Among her many hits I think I prefer Coat Of Many Colors. If you find the time listen to the live version from an Irish pub they happened to pass while on vacation with her husband czcams.com/video/Y3ardckySYY/video.html
I remember seeing her play that live on a morning tv show when I was a kid. She had these huge ass nails on and she's sitting there finger picking the guitar and singing along lol
Just happened to be a pub where Steve Cooney was playing a session. He's an Aussie who is also one of the most highly regarded traditional musicians in Ireland. I did a gig with him once. He's a next level player.
Please, please, please react to more of Dolly. She has such a great catalog. 9-5, Coat of Many Colors, Two Doors Down, Dumb Blonde, and so so many other.
So for some reason my 4 year old is OBSESSED with this song...idek where she heard it but she loves it and makes me play it on loop constantly
Dolly is awesome :) My dad was a state trooper and claims he pulled Dolly Parton's bus over for some infraction back in the 70's. He said he met her and that she was super cool, laughing the whole time. I'll have to double check that with him.
Dolly wrote “I will always love you”, I love that song and Whitney Houston sang that song unbelievably awesome!
Coats of many colors.....this song is what makes dolly a true story teller
Lex understands This Song!!! And Dolly Parton too. I Love This Song!
She wrote "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You" in the same day.
NICE FACTS 💛💙💛TA. #MAA❣️💛
Damn that is actually insane
Yes! Do the Whites Stripes cover of Jolene but I recommend the live version, more intense.
Amazing writer, singer and that hair. To die for!
Dolly is music royalty.. A brilliant song writer and great actress.. She came to Glastonbury recently and was stunned at the reception she got from people so young, she said she didnt expect any of them to know her.. They all did and they also knew all songs . Im sure you'll find it on CZcams Oh and make a point of finding her with Kenny Rogers doing Islands In The Stream..
I don't like country music, but I love me some Dolly. She just has a friendly, easy way about her so charismatic, and talented.
I used to say I didn't like country. But I was wrong. I don't like the crying in your beer old geaser music. But there is a lot of country music that is goo. Real good.
As close to an angel on earth. Just a wonderful human being.
I almost fell out of my chair when I heard Brad say “swing your partner round and round”
American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton has composed over 5,000 songs throughout her career. The total number of individual song titles she has recorded and released is 956, totaling over 1,100 individual recordings when studio recordings, remixes, and live tracks are combined.
Dolly has plenty of "swing your partner round and round" but she's definitely more than that. Heart of gold too.
I feel like I want to say that I really like Brad's attitude towards the premise of this song. It makes me sure that he could never let Lex feel that feeling and for sure she could never ever deserve it. Love you guys💞✌
There was a family of singers on AGT that put a modern spin on this song. Ms Parton contacted them saying how she enjoyed their spin. Look it up. It's a great modern take on Jolene
Dolly just amazing !!! voice of an angel
nothing beats the 80's in music, was just awesome, shops full of records from A to Z to spend whole days, listening and buying albums.
Do coat of many colors!!!!
See all these mentions of the white stripes she deserves all the praise……Jack wishes he could get close to this woman’s career. She’s a Queen. Not to mention she has a heart and soul of pure gold.
Fantastic performer and amazing humanitarian and philanthropist.
Brad: "DAAANG" ! 👀
Lex: "upper proportions" you guys make me laff out loud so much.
Keep doing what you're doing 👍
I love Dolly and I understand! You guys described it right. New doesn't mean better
The Danielle Nicole Band did an absolutely awesome cover of this, she poured so much emotion into it. Amazing version
From everything I've seen Dolly is and has always been a great person
She is quietly one of the most successful songwriters in history. Her and Willie Nelson are good friends because they were coming up at the same time and watched each other's backs. She also funded one of the COVID vaccines, and she runs some very impressive charities. And she's also an actor, and that merged with her identity as a feminist in 9 To 5. And all of that on top of being an excellent businesswoman (Dollywood etc.), and general super-decent human being.
My favorite Dolly song is Coat of Many Colors.
I believe it is also a true story from her childhood. There was a TV movie made about it too
Dolly Parton is a class act and good person. Not my type of music, but definitely respect her.
You should check out "Jolene" by the band Cake (you should just check out Cake, period). It's not a cover, but it feels like a complement to Dolly's version, told from the perspective of a man who's enraptured by a woman named Jolene. It's a 90's college radio banger!
They definitely need to react to some cake songs
Wow Brad I usually comment on Lexi cause she's pretty captivating but loving everything u had to say. Ur a keeper!
Dolly Parton is the real deal. Truly a very good person.
Coat of many colors is a beautiful uplifting song at the same time that makes me think of my mother that has past away long ago . it makes me cry every time.
Dolly is a great singer songwriter. Most of her songs are true stories. She wrote Whitney Houston's biggest hit, I Will Always Love You.
Dolly is such a woman. Such Beauty and elegance.
She has many songs I think you’d both like- and fun fact- she is Miley’s Godmother- I suggest her songs “Coat of many colors” and 9 to 5- 💜👍✌️
Dolly is the reason "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" got made, and my early teen years thanks her everyday for that.
Brad is the man ,what a clear thinker
Just one of the many songs written by Dolly Parton and who doesn't love Dolly
Brad and Lex More proof Brad is one of the few good ones❣ & Lex knows all how it goes! Such a great couple-💜💜💜
Dolly is one of those singers that can create and sing a song at the drop of a hat like they say. Give her a word and she will immediately start banging out a song with her guitar. Very few singers can do that. Living legend❤️❤️❤️
Brings to mind the old saying "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" . . .
Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town - Kenny Rogers.
Brad will implode with that one.
I'm glad you got the live version. It's so much better to see her preform it live. And she is funny doing it!
My husband’s band (Tanner Chase was the band’s name) use to play at the Dixie Stampede, back in the 90’s-early 2000’s.
Brad, you should hear the saddest song ever, “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”
Y’all should watch the hilarious movie 9 to 5 in which Dolly is one of the stars. You’ll die laughing.
The White Stripes have covered this song live. Yes, Jack White sings, and he's so emotional...you truly believe someone is taking his man! 😂 It sounds like an odd cover, but it's f-ing amazing!
Jolene was written back in 1973, and is a just a song she wrote. Her husband Carl completely adores her, ask anyone who knows them, he wouldn't look at another woman. They just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in May. If you want a sad song, listen to Me and Little Andy.
She is a legend plan and simple
Dolly Parton is not only an amazing singer/songwriter, but also flat-out one of the best Human Beings ever.
You should check out the "Jolene"-cover by Miley Cyrus at the Backyard Sessions. Fun-fact: Dolly Parton is actually the (real) godmother of Miley Cyrus ;-)
Yes! Everybody asking for the White Stripes cover, but the Miley backyard sessions cover is my personal favorite
I was actually really surprised by how well Miley did the cover. It’s pretty damn good
Thats my baby's favorite version 🤣
@mark tamayo ooh, someone shit in your Cheerios this morning.
Love the range of songs you two choose! Keep the great content coming! You should check out some screamo! Lex would love the riffs and brad would love the lyrics.
Lex I’ve been to the Dixie stampede 3 or 4 times! I have family in Tennessee and we would visit them every summer. While we were there we would go to the Lost Sea and the Dixie Stampede. Great times. It is just a song she wrote after meeting a fan that was cute with red hair.
Nice breakdown Lex , so true :)
This is what I heard happened ; As soon as Dolly got back to town, she went to see that redheaded woman & they "tussled in the bank". Carl Dean was never in danger, though. Dolly knew he had better sense than that!
... "she has her own set of problems and she just hasn't displayed them yet." Wow Lex so true! But that's ok.. we all have problems.
This version was different than the original recording. She put an extra bar before each "Jolene" in the verses. This let her lay her phrasing back and annunciate better. The feel in the drums was more "pop / rock" in this version too. The original record from the 70s? was more straight ahead folk / country.
This is such a fantastic song because it's so vulnerable and honest.
