  • The Open Internet for Democracy Initiative, a joint initiative from NDI, CIPE, and CIMA gathered the 2022 Open Internet Leaders in São Paulo, Brazil. This group of six activists hail from the Philippines, Nigeria, Ethiopia, India, North Macedonia, and Zimbabwe, and took a week to work together to ensure democratic actors can retain access to essential digital tools and that democratic principles are honored. They came together to create a submission of the Global Digital Compact, a UN initiative to ensure digital technologies are used responsibly and for the benefit of all. In September of next year, the Global Digital Compact will be unveiled and chart the course for the next 30 years on how we will decide the rules of the road for the structure and use of the Internet and the World Wide Web.
