  • Hello Guys,
Welcome back to TechnTechie. Today we will see about the EBS volumes and its snapshot. Also about the Retention rule. Lets have a look on this video.
    What is an EBS volume?
An Amazon EBS volume is a durable, block-level storage device that you can attach to your instances. After you attach a volume to an instance, you can use it as you would use a physical hard drive. EBS volumes are flexible, well-suited for use as the primary storage for file systems, databases, or for any applications that require fine granular updates and access to raw, unformatted, block-level storage.
An EBS snapshot is a backup of a single EBS volume. The EBS snapshot contains all the data stored on the EBS volume at the time the EBS snapshot was created.
On this video you can see the availability Zone which is ap-south-1b and here we can create an Amazon EBS volume to attach to any EC2 instance in the same AZ.
But we will be going to create the EBS Volume in an another AZ then think what will be happened.
As we all should know that we need to create a new volume in the same AZs.
After created a new volume in another AZs. As you can see here the ap-south-1b and ap-south-1a AZ.
Once it is ready to attach to the available instance then go for click on Actions and go to Attach Volume. Yes, here is that which I wants to show you. We can't attach the volume to that AZ in which we don't have an instance. As here we can see no matching running or stopped instances in ap-south-1a AZs.
Its simply means can attach the volume in the same availability zone. We don't need this volume, right. let click on the volume id and can delete direcly from here.
So Guys, we must have to create the volume in the same availability zone.
As per steps please follow this to fulfill the requirements:-
Create the Volume and change the Size to 2GB, then select the ap-south-1b AZs then click on create the volume.
Now here as you can see both the volume are in same Availability zone. Reload it to see the latest status, here it is available to attach now.
This time you can see the instance. Select the instance and go for Attach volume.
The Volume state will show now In-Use, it is changed from Available to In-use state.
Now go on Instances to see under Block Devices the two volumes attached to this instance. Ok!
The default can be Deleted on Termination but not the EBS volume which we just created and attached to this instance.
If we terminate the Instance then this default volume also removed directly and the another one also get free or available to use.
Now, go on Actions tab to create a snapshot.
Give it name on Description "My First Snapshot" and then go to create it.
Once it is successfully created, then you can copy the snapshot on any Destination Region as shown here as well as Encrypt the snapshot.
Also, we can create a volume from snapshot and can choose the Availability zone as well. Where the instances are running or available you can choose to AZs to create a volume from snapshot.
What if someone deleted the snapshot, is there any options to restore it. Yes. We can restore it by creating a retention rule for Recycle Bin.
It is protect the EBS Snapshots and AMIs from accidental deletion.
With Recycle Bin, can specify a retention period within which we can recover these resources after they have been deleted.
Click on Retention Rule to create a new one. Name it as I have given here Retention Rule, and select the resource type "EBS Snapshots" under Settings. Check the Apply to all resources and the retention period should be 1 days or whatever your choice as per your needs you can have it.
Lets do this now. Go on Snapshot and select this, go on Actions tab and click on Delete snapshot.
Go back to Recycle Bin console and check in Resources, there you can see it after reload.
Click on Recover option then go for Recover resources, it will go back to the Snapshot to its original position.
Come back to the Snapshots and there you will see it back after reload.
