Baby Seal Relaxes with Rescuers

  • Naude, Antoine and Denzil from Ocean Conservation Namibia were out on patrol at Pelican Point, when they saw a young Cape Fur Seal pup with a big ball of thick fishing line on his back. After a quick discussion, it was decided that Naude would go for this pup by hand, while Denzil and Antoine would look for other potentially entangled animals in the rest of the group of a few thousand seals.
    Naude ran in and grabbed the line trailing the pup - the line was low on his body so there was no chance of hurting the animal. The pup was very aggressive and kept snapping at the rescuer. Naude was bitten quite badly by a seal just over a week ago, and this was his first rescue since then, so he was a bit apprehensive to say the least! Denzil came with the net to restrain the animal and Naude managed to get a good grip on him.
    As soon as he started cutting the lines the pup totally relaxed, and amazingly, once cut free, did not run away. 99% of the time the seal pups run straight for the water after being freed, but this little guy just sat there, staring at his rescuers, making no attempt to run to the water. 🦭

    For the seal, it's fight or flight. He chose to flee. That didn't work, so he tried to fight. That didn't work either. So at this stage, he's ready to die. His instincts expect them to kill him and eat him. When that doesn't happen, no wonder he looks super confused. He just can't comprehend it. And he's too nervous to turn his back on them again. When they leave, he goes as fast as he can to the water.
    Thanks Namibian rescuers, you guys are amazing.

      @Asherah 1147 well animals aren't aliens ofcourse. The have a nervous system, especially mammals, that have similarities with ours. But the main thing is we're not able to ask them. Sure, we can tell when they are in pain. But we can't communicate vocally. So there's always an element of guessing involved.
      There seem to be some animals that are able to show some level of gratitude, or appreciation after beïng helped/rescued. But those species are few and far in between.

    • @heavycritic9554
      @heavycritic9554 Před 3 lety +39

      Yes, its weapons are its fangs; but it wasn't baring them or barking/hissing anymore.
      It wasn't "thanking" them, but it wasn't angry either. It was probably genuinely confused, though. Also, it was probably tired and took the chance to rest, since it likely didn't feel as directly threatened as it did at first.

    • @klenner
      @klenner Před 3 lety +1

    Apart from actually saving these seals, the best part must be when there is some interaction between the rescuers and the rescued. The way the seal just sat there looking at you guys trying to puzzle out if it's ok to go now? That moment of realization when it knows that you're not a predator and it's not the prey.
