An industrial metal synths video would be cool. There are some great synth tones on Demanufacture (Fear Factory), and City (Strapping Young Lad), that I've never been able to track down. They sound huge, cinematic, and futuristic in a way that I've not heard in other industrial metal music. Same goes for the sounds on Millenium and Hard Wired by Front Line Assembly. I was just getting into anime when first heard those albums, and they have a vibe that feels like anime/manga cyberpunk to me. It's not really something I can explain easily though. Industrial metal like Rammstein, 3 Teeth, Ministry etc is cool, but it has a totally different vibe to me.

True! the microwave was very very popular. The rack version was a nightmare to program lol The XT version was much better though, ugly af also 😂 They're still pretty expensive.
It's like meeting old friends. 😊 Best DX7 emulation by far is Plogue's OP7. It was reverse engineered, has a lot of aces under its sleeve and is actually very easy to program.

Once again, a terrific video! I would add that Nitzer Ebb used an Oberheim Xpander all over Belief, which pretty much defined the sound of that record. My guess is that it was also used on Front Line Assembly's Final Impact, it has that same sort of sound and I think they had one too. Could be emulated with Arturia's Matrix 12 V. Spot on. You got the sounds. But any sound can be used and be industrial. But any "industrial" sounds can be used but lack that thing. Industrial is creative
Thanks man! 🤘🏻 I think you're right any sound CAN be used in an industrial track as a whole. But like any genre, there's a certain "vibe" though. And for Industrial I think that vibe resides in the bassline and also the drum sounds for sure! Sampling/distortion etc. But for sure if you take sounds separately any sounds "can be" industrial. Yeah probably one of the most creative music genre ever.
The Emu Emulator II was responsible for a lot of 242’s stuff, especially on Front By Front and Tyranny For You. Taking stocks samples and pitching them down or using them in an unexpected manner (like strings for a bass line) was their signature trick. TAL-Samoler does a pretty good EII impression.
There were a bunch of bands using the pitching trick - if you listen to OMI’s Universe of Sounds EII library and pitch stuff down you can hear stuff that shows up in Depeche Mode, Front242, OMD, Erasure…

Rhys Fulber (untechnically) half of Front Line Assembly. Love him. Also, I have owned three ASR-10's. I would testify that they 100% have a distinct sound. I hear Its due to the specific converters. yeah 100%, I've been thinking about it for a while. Samplers like the Akai S1000 etc... 🤘The thing is that sampling is so unique to each person that it's hard to know what they did exactly. But yeah samplers would be a great subject :)
i would love modern hardware MS-20 reissue - portable, with modulation matrix (instead of physical connectors), patch saving, and no keys. something like Roland's S-1, which is an excellent substitute for SH-101. and for Pro One, i love my DSI/Pioneer Toraiz AS-1. yeah, i know it's not quite there, but synths rarely go to their extremes when it comes to a real-world mix, not just direct one-to-one comparison.
Right, it's not what you use but how you use it. You can make great albums with very minimalistic gear/setup. All you need is passion and creativity :)
NiN didn’t use the sounds of the DX7 . Reznor famously hated it . Rather they used them for midi controllers live because of the program change messages it could send back to the e-mu e4 racks they used live , as well as the ruggedness since they would be smashed often . They where cheap as chips in the 90s and could pick up spares in just about any state for a couple hundred according to an interview with their synth tech from keyboard magazine. Other notable MS20 user Raymond Watts of PIG used that and the Sh101 ( also heavily used by KMFDM ) on almost all of his releases .

Not only he did not use the sounds, he did not design the sounds but hired a sound designer even two. That guy is a wanted to be pete townsend who broke the guitars in woodstock. Imagine now reznor is hired for "his sounds" so this clown have to bring Aticuss to the rescue because as usual. He cannot do things on his own

The Arturia DX7 has many preset packs on their website that are pretty nice. The interface is MUCH better too. Easier to retro-engineer. That Arturia V Collection is a must have tbh..

We were actually working on the second in studio and playing out live quite a bit when we crashed. We had got a call from Spahn Ranch asking if we wanted to open for them but we were already in the middle of recording and didn't want to stop. We had also gotten a call from KK Records which was under Cargo at the time (which later became Cleopatra I believe). They were interested in what the new stuff sounded like and wanted to talk after we had it done. Somehow that first album made it to California and got into their hands. The plan was to get that second album done, a copy off to KK and touring. Then basically, what was a little local fame went to everyone's heads. Sex, drugs, and no rock-n-roll...
My Repro-1 has scratches on it from heavy use! 😆One of my favourite soft synths. U-He synths are really great, like Zebra and Bazille. I like Surge XT a lot, and DSP56300 emus of Virus and MicroQ. I like your taste, man. Italian? I'm from Croatia. EBM has always been especially neglected genre here... people's tastes suck.
For anyone looking for a cheap alternative to the DX7, the PSS-480 has similar (but very simplified) FM capabilities. I run mine through a nice warm clipper or distortion Its not the same by any means but it'll get you to the same place
@@Tonepusher I'll clarify because I know what the industrial crowd can be like when behind a keyboard It's a cheap, basic FM synth by the same manufacturer, and that's where it ends. I got mine for £5 but you could do so much more with Vember Audio Surge so just download that 😂

@Tonepusher Hey now, once upon a time Casio made some “not bad” keyboards (The CZ range, however I did end up choosing a Yamaha DX 100 over a Casio CZ 5000 {reason being the DX 100 was portable enough to bring home on a subway 🚇} ) but the Casio keyboards you can buy at Walmart…yeah those are dime a dozen.
@@Tonepusher I'm sure the TAL is just as good, it's just that I got a really good deal and had to buy it. Speaking of sequencers, have you tried HY-plugins sequencers? I use HY-SeqCollection mostly for basslines, and HY-RPE when I want euclidean. I haven't found any sequencers that are better or more inspiring. Could be a good video topic one day.
@@jonl.b7168 Good idea! Good software sequencers/arpeggiators are pretty rare tbh! I often use the stock arpeggiator in Cubase. Or I write stuff by hand in Cubase.
The Softube 82 is fantastic. It’s replaced the TAL one for a lot of my stuff. It also integrates into the Softube Modular environment which is a lot of fun (and that integrates into Eurorack through a DC-coupled interface so it’s layers of enjoyment!)

In the dx7 synth version of this video, it.says hard panned left and right. When doing so did you EQ either one of the synths as to avoid phase cancellation of having 2 basses playing at the same time? Excellent video as always.
Hey thanks man :) I did not EQ anything, they're sounds straight out of the DX7s. They're two completely different sounds so I didn't need to worry about phase cancellation really.

@@rammstein1985234 I would recommend checking out Syntorial - it is a simple program with integrated vst that teaches you to recreate what you hear by using basic synth controls. Also in my expirience the good practice is to grab some preset packs and reverse-engineer them by just looking at how they work, analysing it and trying to recreate
ackshually, Trent only used DX7 as MIDI interface, there's no actual DX7 sounds in his music, he used it because they were everywhere in music store and cheap (no remorse if you beat the marde out of them)
I've always been interested in Rob Zombie (and White Zombie) synth sound especially on they remix albums. I mean that liquid and modulated sounds. Can anyone tell me how to achieve such a fancy wierd sound?
For instance: - Dragula (Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinnare Mix). So cool acid sequences and ethereal pads mixed with insanely reverberated (i think it huge reverb) voice textures. - How To Make A Monster - Kitty's Purrrrformance Mix. I love that mid bass in intro. - Living Dead Girl - Subliminal Seduction Mix. Insane synth sounds in bridge on 03:12

Ministry, at least in beginning.. took a lot of knowledge from 242. Al even had the '242' logo on his guitar. I think there is a valid point here, but it's apples and oranges. Nobody actually cares.
Well, it's true that plugins are less popular that they were 5-6 years ago. But I don't think they're out though hehe Companies are selling more and more plugins than ever before. BUT I do think Synthesizers are coming back too. I feel like were in a perfect "hybrid era" where synths are well integrated with computers and plugins. And tbh Serum has never been more popular than right now... lol

My Repro-1 has scratches on it from heavy use! 😆One of my favourite soft synths. U-He synths are really great, like Zebra and Bazille. I like Surge XT a lot, and DSP56300 emus of Virus and MicroQ. I like your taste, man. Italian? I'm from Croatia. EBM has always been especially neglected genre here... people's tastes suck.

@@MorbidManoeuvres definitely on the list 🤘samplers literally shaped industrial music.IMO They influenced industrial more than synths.
For anyone looking for a cheap alternative to the DX7, the PSS-480 has similar (but very simplified) FM capabilities. I run mine through a nice warm clipper or distortion

It's a cheap, basic FM synth by the same manufacturer, and that's where it ends. I got mine for £5 but you could do so much more with Vember Audio Surge so just download that 😂

The dx7 was used as a controller, mainly because it’s easy to waterproof.

@Tonepusher Hey now, once upon a time Casio made some “not bad” keyboards (The CZ range, however I did end up choosing a Yamaha DX 100 over a Casio CZ 5000 {reason being the DX 100 was portable enough to bring home on a subway 🚇} ) but the Casio keyboards you can buy at Walmart…yeah those are dime a dozen.

@@Tonepusher I'm sure the TAL is just as good, it's just that I got a really good deal and had to buy it. Speaking of sequencers, have you tried HY-plugins sequencers? I use HY-SeqCollection mostly for basslines, and HY-RPE when I want euclidean. I haven't found any sequencers that are better or more inspiring. Could be a good video topic one day.
@@jonl.b7168 Good idea! Good software sequencers/arpeggiators are pretty rare tbh! I often use the stock arpeggiator in Cubase. Or I write stuff by hand in Cubase.
The Softube 82 is fantastic. It’s replaced the TAL one for a lot of my stuff. It also integrates into the Softube Modular environment which is a lot of fun (and that integrates into Eurorack through a DC-coupled interface so it’s layers of enjoyment!)

In the dx7 synth version of this video, it.says hard panned left and right. When doing so did you EQ either one of the synths as to avoid phase cancellation of having 2 basses playing at the same time? Excellent video as always.
Hey thanks man :) I did not EQ anything, they're sounds straight out of the DX7s. They're two completely different sounds so I didn't need to worry about phase cancellation really.

@@rammstein1985234 I would recommend checking out Syntorial - it is a simple program with integrated vst that teaches you to recreate what you hear by using basic synth controls. Also in my expirience the good practice is to grab some preset packs and reverse-engineer them by just looking at how they work, analysing it and trying to recreate

ackshually, Trent only used DX7 as MIDI interface, there's no actual DX7 sounds in his music, he used it because they were everywhere in music store and cheap (no remorse if you beat the marde out of them)

I've always been interested in Rob Zombie (and White Zombie) synth sound especially on they remix albums. I mean that liquid and modulated sounds.

Daf used arp in the studio because the ms20 was too thin sounding. Try it. Use a odyssey instead of a ms20 for the balls! I read it in Robert’s book.

Well, it's true that plugins are less popular that they were 5-6 years ago. But I don't think they're out though hehe Companies are selling more and more plugins than ever before. BUT I do think Synthesizers are coming back too. I feel like were in a perfect "hybrid era" where synths are well integrated with computers and plugins. And tbh Serum has never been more popular than right now... lol
