  • Hello!
In this video, I touch on some reasons as to why you would not be a great fit for studying HKUST. I don't think that HKUST is a bad university, but it definitely isn't for everyone!
    Hope you enjoy~

I was an exchange student in HK when I was younger and I partied almost all the time. I think I spent more time in LKF than at campus:) I became an investment banker, returned and lived there for over 10 years, made six figures and would do it all over again. The lesson is: Remember to have lots of fun. You live once. You'll be alright.

Totally agree as a local student. The atmosphere of UST is quite comparative.
Some students are afraid others better than them, so hiding their strength and pretending to be weak on study.
Just like discussing assignments or finding internship, they will not telling something what might benefits others.

I am a current student at HKUST.
According to my observations, HKUST is a great university with high teaching quality and a great learning environment.
I enjoy studying with my friends in the library. When I have problems, I can easily approach my professor and TA. Teachers are patient with students and even willing to have lunch or dinner with me to share more about life experiences.
It all depends on what you want and how you treat others. When you treat others with honesty and love, they will treat you the same way.

I Graduated from HKUST with a very low score, and it is haunting me until these days, although i’m currently doing well in my master degree in Australia.
For someone that trying to survive with low score, all of your option is limited, you cannot get into better major (i received my finance major stream since admission which I regretted so much) , you cannot go into exchange and forced to keep going with no option left.
On other part, you also limited to submit ur cv, as some company have fix limit, asking ur gpa in the begining…
In addition.. the comparison mindset, will haunt you.. it will degrade all your achievements in the future, believing that you will always be “below average” compare to your peers..
    Choose carefully

My parents dont let me have many options honestly, they denied it when I asked whether I can study outside of hong kong. They say, it is more expensive to live outside of hong kong (is it really true). I am right now doing IB diploma and I am in year 12 in hong kong. I really do not have a fixed career path yet, and I really do not like too much competition. Do you think HKUST is more stressful than IB (as in one of your earlier videos, you had said you did IB). I am honestly not a person who wants to go for parties as I am quite introverted, but I am an international student. Is it really that stressful? Thank you.

    • @kohyee
      @kohyee  Před 2 lety +1

Hi! Outside universities do tend to be more expensive if you count their international prices + high cost of living, but it also depends if you will count as an international in HKUST or not (do you have an HKID?). It is stressful not in the IB way, but in a "there is a lot to memorise and I wish the teaching is a little better" way, but all universities have their own flaws. It does depend on what you want to get out of university tho.

You have to take a bus or a minibus just to get to and from HKUST. If you like going out to the city, CityU is the clear choice. HKUST has a beautiful campus, probably the most scenic campus in Hong Kong if we're being honest, but at the end of the day it's relatively inaccessible by public transit. Going out to the city is a journey compared to other universities. HKUST is good for hunkering down and focusing on your studies, but I doubt that's what you're going for while you're in HK.
