    British shooters frowning on other British shooters is how we ended up so far up the gun-ban swanny; death by a thousand cuts and it works because nobody ever sticks up for their fellow man and says "I'm alright, jack!". Every man to his own, I say. If the gun does the work, have at it.

    You have overlooked two big advantages of the O/U (at least for us in the States.) First, each barrel can have a different choke for near vs far shots. Secondly, different loads for different game. We have a problem with feral hogs. You could shot rabbit all day with the top barrel and squirrels with the bottom or maybe put a slug in the bottom in case you run into a hog. Either way, it breaks down to two barrels, two chokes, and two different load possibilities.

    • @imperialwhovian3461
      @imperialwhovian3461 Před 4 lety +3

      That is a partly valid point but with a good modified choke and ammo like Federal black cloud or other tungsten steel shot gives you much better range and knock down power. Also shot size but that depends on which game you are going for. Personally for pheasants I use #2 shot and no meat waste and very high kill retrieval probability

    Just loved the end comment about winding people up with a semi and DPM’s!
    I shoot a Winchester SX3 12 shot and frequently go clay shooting with it and at times wear a DPM jacket, although mostly used for vermin control. Perhaps I’m lucky it’s never upset anyone quite the reverse it’s often attracted attention and interest. I have to say I can’t see the difference in shooting game with one, two, three or more rounds, I actually find it more “unsporting” to first of all breed birds, feed them, release to the wild hoping they adapt then to finish line up a bunch of jack arses wearing tweeds and silly socks, having another bunch scaring the birds towards the guns. That’s more “unsporting” try that on crows and they’d just laugh at jack arses as I frequently do when I see those ridiculous socks....!!!

    Very nice to see people from other countries very interested in firearms and making informative videos based on their own opinions. I'm not in Europe but ran across your videos and decided to watch a couple that caught my eye. Hope it works out well for you. I tire of all the "tacti-cool" American video channels. It would be nice to see some people doing videos on sporting arms instead of the popular black rifles and pistols we have here.
    Here in the SW USA probably the most common shotguns seen in the field are pump action and autoloaders(semi automatic). The Pump action is by far the most common. Our laws limit magazine capacity for migratory game such as waterfowl, dove, crane, etc... We don't, or at least I don't, see a whole lot of Over/Under or SxS shotguns out in the field. There are some but not a lot. The Over/Under is extremely popular here for competitive and sport shooting. I see a lot at the range.
    I personaly am looking at adding an Over/Under for field use this year. Just something different and I find I never actually fire the 3rd shot I'm allowed in my magazine fed shotguns.

    Having had rotator issues with the shoulder in the past, an A 400 xcel black edition weighing in at 6 lbs. and an incredibly light and soft recoil makes this a no brainer for me. I have a O/U and the weight alone, let alone more out front, and a fair amount more of harder recoil makes my clay count near the end of a round much diminished over the semi. It's just what suits YOUR personal needs best and for me ,with owning both guns with the O/U bought first, I do not even take the O/U out anymore, now it's my back up.

Waterfowl is overwhelmingly shot with 3" and 3.5" autos here in the states, that's not going to change.

  • @TheNLHunting
    @TheNLHunting Před 6 lety +14

    Neither gun is actually BETTER than the other, the real difference is all personal preference and trade offs:
    -double barrel has more power (doesn't lose gas to cycle) but a bit more kick
    -you can use 2 different chokes but why would need to and nobody ever really does
    -semi has an extra shot (mag/law dependent) but you lose 2 inches of barrel to have it
    -double barrel is nice and easy to use and operate, and is very safe when barrel is cracked, but its heavy whereas the semi is typically very light
    -As for firing speed, if you are shooting those two shots as fast as you can pull the trigger your second shot would have been fired at the exact same moment that you are absorbing recoil from the first shot, and your shot will not be accurate. Nobody ever attempts to fire that quickly at game.
    -Double barrel is slower to load having to crack the barrel, load both chambers and close it again. Most semi's have an autoloader, where you put one shell in the mag and it immediately puts one in the chamber ready to rock, or just drop one into the receiver onto the shell ramp and hit the bolt release. Also, you have mag cutoffs, where you can eject the shell from your chamber to load a differing shot size.
    -The biggest advantage to be spoke of with double barrel will not jam even with cheap ammo. But why would anyone use cheap ammo on game, and if you have a high quality and regularly cleaned/oiled semi odds are it will never jam either, but the chance is always there (shit happens)

    Can’t go wrong with a Browning BPS as a first shotgun. $7-800 brand new will get you into shooting and last several lifetimes. They chamber it in .410, 28, 20, 16, 12 & 10ga. Available in full size and youth sizes. Holds 5 shells (in the home of the Brave) and most fire 3 inch magnums. Ejects spent shells straight down with a tang safety so it’s ambidextrous. This is important, because many people who get into shot gunning don’t realize they are cross eye dominate. So a right handed beginner has a good chance of having to learn to shoot left handed. The wood stocks looks good, they are reliable & build quality is still great. Unless your worried about what a couple stuck-up pricks think… than well…

    The advantage of the over under shotgun is choice of two chokes so near birds get the optimum pattern density and more distant birds get the optimum pattern density. Reliability of two shots versus three that must cycle out to make room to fire. That makes it more prone to problems of ejection to cycle. For skeet I use an autoloader, Browning Model B2000 with a skeet tube in place. I had choke tubes added to it by Colonial Chokes in Alabama. For sporting clays I use an O/U because there is the advantage of having two chokes and a choice of which to fire first. I live in a FREE state of the USA, so there is no restriction on what shotguns (or rifles or handguns) I can own. I choose them because I shoot best with them. I could use either for Trap, but, at least where I live, "trap shooter" seems to be a synonym for "self important asshole" so I bypass the trap fields and trap shooters. When I encounter rude and careless drivers, and not wishing to use coarse language in the presence of my wife, I just call them "trap shooters".
    The club where I shoot has long magnets to make picking up empties easy for old guys like me, and an empty bucket at each station to dispose of the empty hulls. I used to reload everything, but now only do 16, 28 and .410 shells. The price of components has gone up and 12 and 20 ga. are available very cheap. They simply are not worth the time to reload anymore. 16, 28 and .410 are all expensive, so it is worth my while to load those, but 90% of my shooting is 12 or 20 gauge.
    FWIW, many shooters use autoloaders for Sporting Clays here, and seem to do OK with them.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP Před 5 lety +5

      Brits cannot use guns for home defense. The British have found that making victims helpless makes criminals harmless, right?
      You are correct about the A-5 but ALSO other Browning guns. It is called the "Speed feed" feature and is a function of most, if not all, Browning autoloaders. I have an A-5, B-2000, and Double Auto and they all do it. The B-2000 and Double Auto are loaded through a port in the left side, which is actually very useful for right handed shooters, you never shift the gun from hand to hand. Put the butt on your hip, muzzle safely pointed up, hold the wrist with your right hand and feed shells into the left side with your left hand. The first shell goes directly to the chamber, the next goes in the magazine.

    I clay shoot with a semi auto (Browning Maxus) the grounds I frequent have absolutely no issue with patrons using whatever they want, we even see guys with pump actions, just remember it's considered good etiquette to pick up spent shells instead of leaving them laying around. I would also go as far to recommend a semi for youths, the reduced weight, especially at the muzzle makes them idea for younger shooters, it will also allow them to start out with a 12 guage rather than learning all the characteristics of a 20 or 28 guage and having to learn all over again once they progress onto a full bore.

    The only real advance to owning an O/U vs a semi-auto is that O/U's are much easier to break down and clean... plus they tend to last much longer.
    Other than that, a good semi-auto is better in most other aspects. Less felt recoil, cheaper, one barrel points to the same place every time where-as two barrel are slightly off... most people really only buy O/U's because they look cooler. No real functional advantage. And don't tell me "two chokes" ... no one really uses 2 vastly different chokes.

      It's not a special license in the UK either but you legally can't shoot any game with anything that holds more than 2 +1, generally means that if you have an FAC (more than 3 shots) shotgun it becomes worth much less and you can't convert it back to a legal game shooting gun so people generally don't bother unless they only shoot pests which 5 +1 or whatever shotguns are great for. I know in America you can install magazine stoppers to lower the capacity so you're legal but you simply can't do that here

I do use an autoloader or pump in goose pits or in duck marshes. In the pits, we try to have at least one man who is left handed or with a downward ejecting gun. • @wholeNwon
      @wholeNwon Před 6 lety

      Well, we've always had a somewhat different view of such things over here.
      It seems to relate to the British class "system". There many look askance at game shooters using autoloaders because they confer an unfair advantage of that extra round in the magazine. The more sportsmanlike British shooter with his double has but two shots and then the quarry keeps his life. That is, of course, unless the shooter is wealthy or, even better, an aristocrat. Then he shoots a matched pair of guns with unlimited rounds available with the aid of his loader! How undemocratic of you.
      I'm reflecting on my own guns and can recall only one that has been professionally serviced (repaired actually) and that was a British gun.
      All of the other doubles have been reliable and several are quite old. One used regularly is 118 years and another 109 years old. They are tight on face and show no signs of ever having been mechanically invaded.

Use a safe flag when not in use and noone has ever said a thing to be, the club included who even complimented my Baretta as a nice (older silver mallard 390) gun. I've lovely over and under (and side by side) 12/20 bore guns and I prefer my auto for clay shooting as the recoil is significantly less and it does the job well. Shoot what you love, do it safely and enjoy it. That's the point. Dang now THAT is a topic I've never seen covered. I'd love that.

      If I recall clearly, it is much more complicated to weld two barrels together, than to order a bunch of computer-milled parts in China. Most (if not all) manufacturers still weld the barrels by hand (done by very experienced, expensive craftsmen and women). There's a How It's Made video about making double-barrel shotguns.

      Dom san the two barrels thing definitely makes sense. A spare barrel for my Remigton 1100 is around $230 so we could add that to the cost. A lot of O/Us use a better grade of wood, hand engraved receivers, etc, but not all. Fancy shotguns deserve fancy prices but the price of an entry level Stoeger, Stevens 555, Mossberg Silver Reserve, etc, is unnaturally high compared to their semi-auto counterparts in my opinion, even when considering the spare barrel.
      Even used guns, for example. Singleshots can be bought in the USA for $80-$150 all the time, but very very rarely do you see bottom of the line SXS or OU's for $160-$300, even though that pricepoint would more-than-allow for the extra barrel.

      Carley Smith joining the two barrels together is the real expense, so that they don’t fall apart, weigh a tonne and point in the same direction. That mixed with a more complex ejection system and a more intricately timed trigger system makes for more cost. Building a semi auto is mechano whereas an over and under is true gunmaking

    Any chance of a semi auto comparison vs a 3 barrel shotgun on the clays?

    Definately not a first gun in the US. Way too expensive but great video!

    I truly hope one day England has gun laws like here in Canada. Such a shame.

    I guess they never made a bottom-eject auto cycling shotgun. So, like something based on the Ithaca Model 1937 action. That would solve the ejection problem.

      There's 2 - the Remington 105 Cti (no longer made) and there's that Beretta break open semi auto..

    I remember when under and overs were frowned upon (and calling them over and unders) also wearing brown shoes with anything other than casual wear, using only a fork to eat your dinner and calling chaps or blokes guys. Frowning and general snobbery is now frowned upon which is a shame really!! also exclamation marks are a definite no no.

    I can see you’re a double gun aficionado, but does your allegiance lie with sxs or o&u? Here lately I’ve been trying to decide if I prefer shooting my 525s over a B-80..

    Noob question if you were to play trap, and only fire one shot, and have the first shot set to a barrel. Do you have to pull the trigger twice to reset back to the barrel you selected, or if when you open the action the triggers will reset and the barrel you selected will still fire first. That you for your time

    I think O/Us are more durable, reliable & long lasting thn Semi.auto. However, disadvantage is in duck shooting, when a flock comes and u can fire only 2 rounds & almost all the remaining flock observes ur helplessness.
