The theory I've heard as to why some gravity filter spouts aren't situated at the lowest point in the bag is so that heavy sediment rests at the bottom of the bag instead of gunking up the filter.

If you filter into an empty Sawer bag (no air) instead of a water bottle, you can fully tighten the blue adapter and not have the vacuum effect. This way, when the bottom bag is full, it will stop filtering and not overflow.

To fill try getting a one gallon zip lock bag, immerse it until full and then pour into the opening of the large dirty water bag. Safe, quick and light. Thanks for the post

The clip does serve a purpose, as per the instructions. When you have the bag hanging (not at an angle like you have) level, the clip goes at the outlet part of the bag with the hose running over top of it to prevent crimps in the hose.
Likewise, if you’re laying the bag, say on a picnic bench, the black clip helps to prevent a bend in the hose.

Noticed when screwing water bottle on. Don't over tighten, that damages the o-ring and will cause leaking. The o-ring is designed to work with just a tiny bit of pressure.
Also was going to comment about letting air out of your bottle as you put water into it, but that was discovered!
And I think it was mentioned earlier, the little water left in the bag because the outlet isn't at the lowest point is sometimes reserved for sediment and other nasty stuff that you don't want in your filter.
    Great video.

Put an "S" in the outflow tube so dirty water drips to ground before passing over outside of filter. This will avoid contaminating bottle lip.

I have this set up and i agree with you. Filling this bag up sucks and it's a bulky set up, so i kept the filter and ditched the bag for a Hydroblu Go Flow 10lt dry bag set up.

I had a water bag/jug similar to the Sawyer bag and had a hell of a time getting it to fill. I wound up cutting out the spigot from that bag and installing it in a waterproof stuff sack. Haven't tried it yet but I have to imagine it will be easy to fill. Probably more durable too. The downside: no more waterproof stuff sack. Good video :)

  • @sergevuillermoz7901

Hi, I think your hack works well if you have fairly clear water. But in the case of nasty green standing or muddy brown water you are funneling all the nastiness down the tube and into the filter which will clog up and reduce the flow or block it. Depending on how bad the water is, you might have to backwash the filter before your gallon is trough...not cool. Also, if the water is that dirty you want it to run away from where the hose comes out of the bag. Hanging the system from the handle will prevent a majority of the gunk going trough the tube and prevent the nastiness on the outside of the bag running along the outside of the tube. I also make a sort of siphon shape with the tube so that if water runs along, it does not reach the clean recipient (easier with longer tubing).
The black plastic thing is to prevent the tube from kinking when you lay the bag for filtering instead of hanging.

  • @Emtrthree
    @Emtrthree Před 3 lety

I think the black clip can be placed on the filter so you can hang it up with the coupler to raise it to above the bag. Hang it up above the bag and it shouldn't flow on you

  • @bufordman1976

Maybe using it the right way might hold some of the sediment since there is a offset where the water comes out to filter.

I like the additions of the threads to the mini... but I wish you could buy it on its own. I use a platypus 2l bag and universal bottle adapter with my mini and it works really well. I found the little sawyer bags comically difficult to fill. this larger one doesn't seem much better.

Get another sawyer 1 gallon bag. 1 bag fills the other bag. Be sure you label the clean bag lol and if you already carry a hatchet. Bring 3 framing nails you can set whatever height you want to filter from. Then wiggle the nail out when you leave asuming you didnt send it deep. The system is flawless.... enjoy

I purchased a Katadyn gravity feed water filter bag. I had to call her 800 number. I found the bag has the same size hole in the bottom as the lid on a Nalgene water bottle. You can buy the water bottle lid on Amazon. I drilled a hole in the center of the lid. I went to the hardware and bought a but connector for gas lines. And cut it in half. I use some sandpaper to rough up the plastic and I used gorilla glue. To grill though nipple that I made out of the butt connector the inside of the lid facing out. The water is not staying in with the glue or the plastic but connector for very long so I’m not worried about contamination. I ordered some hoes with the bag from the 800 number. And they on and off compression clicker. Then I just put the Sawyer mini below the on off valve. If I remember right the bag is approximately 10 L are use the system in Cuba without any problems at all. I was able to make dinner or do any chores while I was filtering water for two people every day. When I get ready to leave Cuba I reversed water using a water bottle back from the Sawyer mini hold onto the pavement the payment was extremely hot to kill any bacteria instantly. My system fits into a small shave kit. It’s a must for traveling to Third World countries!!!
I purchased couple large bottles of water when I first got to Cuba and just refilled those bottles throughout the whole trip. Went out and about in Havana and surrounding cities I used a ultraviolet light pen. Which also worked just fine on water with no ice.
I still don’t know if a Sawyer‘s mini is storable for more that a month or two or year after use. Or after being properly stored away. I just buy new ones. 20 bucks it’s cheap for good water in a Third World country or backpacking. But if anyone knows anything about storage I would appreciate some extra information. Thanks in advance!

What@d1rtbag35 says it true. The way the bag is desighned you can fill it, set it, let the sediment settle. This will prolong the life of your filter. If not much sediment in water - use the great work around method in this video. Great review!
