  • First and foremost, Prepare to Cry is about storytelling. I take parts of the lore and carry them to a tragic conclusion. That said, logical reasoning is very important, and you can view my reasoning here: bit.ly/1uQex09

      It's the "old king soul" could be Gwyns soul or a part of it because it creates a lightning miracle or a dragonslayer greatbow. It could also be the real iron kings soul, because the thing you fight is actually a creature that was born from using the old iron kings body.

    Y'know, looking at all the kings and their queens, I'm beginning to believe that the overarching theme of Dark Souls 2 is duality... almost an expansion of the disparity the first flame brought.
    Look at each of the kings and their queens and notice that they really do seem to be two sides of the same coin:
    Vendrick represents generosity, attempting to build a world for his people to live happily. Opposing this is Nashandra, representing greed - an insatiable lust for power even at the cost.
    The Sunken King represents serenity. Their people very heavily into faith and worshiped a sleeping dragon... their world was relatively at peace. But then there's Elana, who easily represents rage, her influence on Sihn showing the destruction of the Sunken City.
    The Old Iron King represents ambition... this is obviously shown in this video. Nadalia, however, seems opposed to having anyone tap into the same ambition as her would-be king, even going as far as to seal away the scepter that lights the fire. Also, instead of doing anything with Brume Tower beyond her dance, she simply sits and waits, leaving everything to the guards she enticed. I believe she represents essentially laziness or sloth.
    Finally, the most obvious of the four, the Ivory King. This man above all else, represents bravery and valor. A warrior from a far-off land, he was the first to engage the enemy in all his battles as king. He even dove into the depths of Chaos without fear... which is clearly what his queen represents. She says so herself.

      And yet with Alsana we see something new. Instead of submitting to her nature like all of her sisters, Alsana is saved. Her Ivory King gives her compassion, even knowing who and what she is, even knowing how fearful and dark she is, he loves and has faith in her, entrusting her with the security of the entire world, implicitly believing, that if his attempt to sate the Chaos should fail, that frail, dark creature who he loved dearly, would be the one who's might would hold the Chaos at bat in his stead. And she did everything he believed she could and more. Thanks to just a bit of compassion, Alsana is able to overcome her fear and become brave, overcome her frailty and become strong, overcome her destiny and forge her own purpose, and most of all, she is able to overcome her own darkness, and shine the brightest of anyone in her age. Alsana may have been born the fearful child of Manus, but she comes the represent the most powerful thing of all, The One Who Overcomes.

    I'm actually just thinking that since the Smelter Demon is kind of like Alonne, I'd like to think that the Iron King had a moment to block, to evade, to fight back but seeing the image of his dear friend and mentor in a different form, he simply accepted the blow. Then the question "is the Smelter Demon really strong enough to take down the King who had bested Alonne" wouldn't matter because he accepted the death himself.
    It kinda fits the aftermath of his fight with Alonne too. Broken man and all, maybe he sees redemption or something similar by being struck down by something that resembled Alonne.
    Just a thought though.

      DeiStar Alpha I've always been so captivated by Dark Souls lore. It's some of the best writing in gaming. Then people say "it doesn't have much of a story" I've always reply with, just pay attention and there will be a story! It will be one of the best stories you've ever seen! Just pay attention people! But now I just send them to your videos, which by the way are awesome. That accent is like the cherry topping of this story telling though, good narration can make any story seem interesting. I listened to Morgan Freeman talk about penguins for nearly 3 hours, it may have just been videos of them eating and pooping but simply because he was narrating it easily turned it into the most intense 3 hours of my life. And when the story is this amazing, tragic and deep it's literally popcorn worthy! Thanks for all the hard work you put into making these. Recording footage, making characters, finding the gear to play boss character rolls with your main character... can't imagine how long that takes.

      I doubt it was the Smelter Demon who destroyed the Kingdom, likely there was a greater monster that in its fury and power, destroyed itself and the kingdom together.

      ***** I always just thought the Iron King was just too big of a bitch to fight for himself, and lead to Smelty owning him with one hit. Then again, his hammer does require one strong mofo to wield it...so maybe he got smacked through a window, lived, but fell into lava? (gravity is the only thing that could kill Tarkus, after all)

    • @ClassMRule
      @ClassMRule Před 9 lety +4

      joshua kim I'm not sure if the Smelter Hammer is even belongs to the Smelter Demon. For starters, we only see two Smelter Demons in the game, both of which use swords.
      Granted that the Smelter Hammer was not always used as a hammer... Still, the enemies who wield this massive tool are unique in of themselves.
      That said, having multiple Smelter Demons also brings questions into whether or not it was he who destroyed the Kingdom.
      Is it more Time Travel?
      Is Aged Smelter just a Demon from another time from ours?
      Is it the same Smelter Demon?
      Are they different, aside from being Red and Blue / Fire or Magic?
      Or was it figurative, and that the Smelter Demons were a point of contention among the Kingdom's citizens, and why they eventually left their King. As had many knights who left to join Sir Alonne, following him to places far away?
      Alternatively, maybe the Old Iron King built these Demons as a way to replace his army of Alonne Knights after they had abandoned him?
      Or still yet, as a massive Juggernaught and war machine, poised to strike at other Kingdoms. The Old Iron King's equivalent to German Panzer divisions.
      Surely, this iron behemoth would spare countless numbers of loyal knights from battle, while acting as a brutal force on the front lines, crushing those who oppose him.
      True, Smelter Demons are powerful. But hardly strong enough to sink an entire Kingdom through force.
      And unless the King was SL1, I doubt any Smelter could 1 Shot him.

    Alonne wields a cursed blade, a 'youto', a blade so powerful and bloodthirsty it will feed on the wielder if it doesn't draw blood or souls.
    The Japanese myth of cursed blades always tells stories of swordsmen who live for the battle because the blade beckons it to. The swordsmen are merely vessels for the demon in the blade, they gain power and bloodlust through the possession.
    I believe Alonne or rather the blade has no motivation except for killing, and the only reason he is here is to reap souls. When he was defeated the sword deems him unworthy and drives him to commit seppuku, and allows itself to fall into the hands of the player who is obviously stronger and can feed it more.

      From what I understand, the Iron King, in his hubris, attempted to animate iron with a soul and thus created the Smelter Demon. This creature, uncontrollable, killed the Iron King. Afterward, the Iron King's stronghold, the Iron Keep sunk into lava due to its sheer weight as it was composed entirely out of iron. The Iron King's body was submerged with the Keep and, from there, interacted with the dormant Lord Soul of Gwyn that, over the eons, had been buried at that spot. Attracted to the powerful residual soul of the Iron King, the Lord Soul possessed the Iron King's body and created the monster that haunts the remnants of the Iron Keep.

      The Old Iron King's life was taken by a mass of iron that had been given a soul. Was this metal goliath there from the beginning, or was it a product of the king's conceit?
      The Old Iron King's Soul description:
      Soul of the Old Iron King, who succumbed
      to the flames that swallowed his castle.
      The Iron King's flesh was charred, and his
      soul possessed by the things that lurk below.
      The Old King Soul description:
      Soul of the ineffable.
      This once magnificent soul continues to exert influence over the land, even after the eons have reduced it to these remnants.

    Theory....... The 3 dlc are in a reverse chronological order, with pieces of the previous kingdom leading to the next.
    Ivory: The old chaos breaks free after Alsaana passes away. The old kings soul remains into it after the the one who held it, the ivory king is being slain by the player.
    OIK: The old chaos has engulfed the area with magma. the old iron king had no lord soul (his pyromancer Eigyl might had the old witch soul though. he/she might be the lost sinner). When he dies the old kings souls finds his body, and the old chaos twists them into the lava creacture of ichorous earth.
    Sunken: One of the oik creations, the iron dragon is found by the one who held the old dead one soul and he builds a kingdom around it to worship Sinh the slumbering dragon
    Finally Drangleic. The kingdom is built after the destruction of Shulva, establishing itself on the remains and relics of the kingdom. The religion is retained but with the creation, the ancient dragon in the center. The king also builds his castle uppon the land that belonged to both the the ivory king and later to the sunken king, that still has the undead crypt below it. He also utilizes the things he finds from the past eras, like the golems, the oiks creations etc.

      Makes sense, and Yorgh's ring has the same insignia as the Dragnleic shield and its banners, so maybe Vendrick sent the Drakeblood knights to sabotage Shulva, which led to its downfall. But I have to disagree with your theory, because I believe we visit those kingdoms in their present state, not traveling back in time, and I doubt anyone in Dark Souls would simply pass away, especially a child of Manus. And the Iron King probably dug too deep into the earth, I wouldn't be surprised if Chaos was waiting for him there, and if Eygil was really a pyromancer he might've used the Iron King's greed for his own purposes.

    • @PaladinfffLeeroy
      @PaladinfffLeeroy Před 9 lety +4

      Smitty Werben Jagger Man Jensen Or do you?!
      There is a theory that in the intro you actually jump back in time to the kingdom of Drangleic. That would suggest that you are already playing the entire game in the past. But then you get the heart to travel into memories of the withered, in which you slay the Giant lord. The last giant had no motive to set himself free from his chains, while he clearly could have done that. But only when the player enters the room does the giant move. He knows you from a past time perhaps...
      Also, when you go in the memory of Vendrick you are going to the past because he is still sane.
      It would only be sensible to be traveling through time when going into the dlc's.
      Even the developers clearly stated that time traveling was going to be a major thing in Dark Souls 2.
      There is more evidence towards traveling in time than not traveling in time.
      But afcourse, you can assume anything you want because none of this is true and all is assumption. So don't just outright state something is true.
      This man has his own theory about the lore and it might just be true.

    • @takaponche

      That's an interesting interpretation, but I always had an impression that shulva took place in the past and it becomes to what we know as the shrine of amana. The presence of the archdrake of lindelt, lindelt's secrecy of the slumbering dragon (the slumbering dragon shield), the evil pacmans in shulva that shares some similarities to a tadpole which could grow up to be the horrifying frog in the shrine of amana are some of the things that gave me this impression.

    • @panos3320
      @panos3320 Před 9 lety

      Smitty Werben Jagger Man Jensen hmm, i have my doubts, but still, the theory works even without time traveling. the old kings soul could have been lost in the old chaos without the players aid, after all you pick it from its current owner, not the old one. But still, the kingdoms go in this order ivory>oik>sunken>drangleick with each kingdom carying pieces from the previous, fallen one.

    Excellent video with implications for all the other memories as well!
    Jeigh, Vammar, and Orro....I used to think those were the giants, but after this video I think those are the names of Vendricks warriors and you're reliving THEIR memories (and not the giants turned into trees).
    In those memories you're climbing stairs, running through narrow passageways, jumping ledges, talking to Bernhart for some frigging reason, and bringing down the King of Giants... I don't think the giants did any of this!
    So it stands to reason that Jeigh, Vammar, and Orro are three heroes whose names are forgotten to all but you.

      I still wonder how and why Benhart is even in one of those memories. It's also possible that Orro and Drummond worked together to defeat the Giant Lord, but Drummond was killed in the battle possible and his remains were lost when the fort's footing crumbled as evidenced by its current location and condition. Man, Jeigh and Vammar must have been some true BAMFs to have combated giants (either that or run past them like pussy like me and rush the Giant Souls XD)

      Good point about Drummonds armor in the wreckage.
      Note the missing helmet, I guess he already gave it to Vammar(?) in the previous memory.
      I might be giving the b-team too much credit here but it looks like Drummond's last stand was before the giant lord where he got his ass kicked by either the giants or the fire raining down on him, making Orro the forgotten warrior who single-handedly took the giant lord down.
      As for bernhart, that dude makes no sense in this game whatsoever.....the b-team really half-assed the plot on this one because it's as much a poorly connected patchwork as the level design is.

      It could have been that or many other reasons...none of which were explained.
      Bernhart is the "loveable sleeping oaf" of Dark Souls 2.
      In Demons Souls it was Biorr Twinfangs and in Dark Souls it was Seigmayer Of Catarina.
      But while these two had interesting backstories that run along side the main plot, Bernhart is just a goofy take on Mel Gibsons braveheart with his silly fake blade who summons for bossfights here and there.
      No point discussing him further since he is as much a joke character in this game as Paladin LEEEEEROY Jeeeeeenkins was in DS1.
      Sad part is that the joke was unintened.

Since he does possess Gwynn soul it probably remembers and reenacts this occurrence in a twist and distant but similar manner. Also the same happens when Sir Alonne takes and keeps the Old Iron Kings old throne as a keepsake similar to how Gwyns first born left a certain miracle (Sunlight Blade) on his fathers coffin as a farewell.

    Though it assumes you play out the Memories through the eyes of their owners, which can't be true according to the "Giant Memories". But I'd rather think that's a problem on the game's part (God knows it has a lot already!).

    • @OtomostheCrazy
      @OtomostheCrazy Před 9 lety +5

      Are you sure about that? The owners of those memories could have been human. Jeigh (or whoever the memory with the Giant Lord belonged to) could have been a human. Along with all the others.

    • @casulgamer1499
      @casulgamer1499 Před 9 lety

      OtomostheCrazy And also at the end of memories you find dead giants who could have been killed by soldiers in witch memories you are. And their memories fused with giants that became trees (and you don't go to king memory by his stuff but via allones armor so then it makes perfect sense)

    • @Rain4791
      @Rain4791 Před 9 lety +1

      Well while at this point it is entirely speculation one thing that you have to remember is that to get to this DLC you first have to defeat the old iron king and through this you obtain his soul. Unlike with the other memories in which the giants soul is located within and they serve as the trigger to leave since that would effectively be the end of the "memory", you already possess the OIK's soul whether it still be in soul form, you absorbed it, or fashioned it into a "cough" worthless weapon "cough" you still have his soul with you in some form so playing through the memory as the king would make sense in a way since seeing the original throne chair was such a powerful moment that it effectively "ended" the memory though this is still really stretching it.

    • @DarkSoulSama
      @DarkSoulSama Před 9 lety +1

      OtomostheCrazy Drummond saying "You are not one of our soldiers. And I don't take you for a mercenary." as well as Benhart's presence and the Last Giant recognizing you (this last part might be debatable) lead me to believe that you physically travel back in time as yourself when entering the Memories.

      I thought the analogy was perfect. A bird can want for flight, but without wings it will never achieve that goal. Ambition is to want for something (in this case greatness), but without wisdom, you have no means by which to achieve that goal. Wisdom tempers out actions with forethought and consequence. Without these things, you are doomed to make choices which will unravel your ambition.

    Interesting how a few lore bits can completely change the view of a person.
    Before, we tended to see the Iron King as a greedy asshole who didn't care at all about his country.
    After, we see that his exploitation of the land was really the only choice he had. Wasn't a particularly nice guy, sure, but he did have some redeeming qualities; he did, at the very least, care about the state of his kingdom, if only for his own reasons.

    • @anothertarnishedone5960
      @anothertarnishedone5960 Před 9 lety +2

      Thenextworldwar In my opinion, that`s actually what about DS2 is all about. We have four great kings and heroes, who did incredible things and created powerful kingdoms... Some were noble, and some were tyrannical, but all were ambitious and iron-willed. In the end, all fell to the darkness, of their own souls or the souls of others, like a flame who burns too brightly.

    • @KuraiChanZ
      @KuraiChanZ Před 9 lety +3

      Hm I'm not that good with lore, but time in Drangleic is convoluted.
      There were many undead that went to the past, like you the chosen undead, but failed. They killed bosses that we killed. The Faraam Knight in the trailer, I'd say that's one of the undead that tried to do what we did. We find his amour in Drangleic Castle, that's where his story ends I think.
      So anyway sure we may of killed Alonne, but in another time the Iron King killed him. Afterall it is the memory of the Old Iron King.

    • @Marzipan178

    • @mentalsovereignty
      @mentalsovereignty Před 9 lety +6

      It's called the Memory of the Old Iron King, so I'm assuming the Iron King did kill Alonne. You only gain access to the memory after killing the Fume Knight and retrieving the Crown of the Old Iron King. Therefore, you essentially replace the Old Iron King in the memory as the new bearer of his crown.
      Only flaw in this theory is that you don't need the crown itself to access the memory, you just have to defeat Raime. However, since you get the crown right after the boss fight, I can see how both events signify defeating the area, usurping the throne, winning the kingdom or whatever.

    Excellent video Vaati. Your videos (especially your lore ones) are the best CZcams has to offer. Your videos were phenomenal back in the demon's souls days and its amazing to see how far they have come. I still would have enjoyed them regardless, but the fact that you are constantly finding ways to present the information and theories in new and interesting ways really blows me away. The visual mods have really added layer to your videos that really hits home.
    The Souls series already has a fantastic community and to me, you are one of the driving forces behind that. I always make a point of showing people new to the series your videos, not to spoil things for them, but to show them the scale of the game and the shear amount of depth there is to every facet of these games.
