Formal Suit Made from Hemp, Cotton, Alpaca, Silk, & Wool | HTME: Remix

- We revisit one of my earliest and most challenging projects to date: attempting to make a formal suit from scratch. For it I travel to Colorado for hemp, Texas for cotton, raise my own silkworms, sheer a sheep and alpaca, spin all the fibers and weave, knit, felt and sew everything into my attempt at a formal suit.
This is a new edit of one of our previous older series that was comprised of 11 separate videos. We've combined them all and cut it down to twenty minutes into a format that we feel is easier to follow along with on CZcams.

Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

I love how out of place he looks in that knitting circle... its like old women, another old women, middle aged women, another middle aged women, yet another middle aged women, and then a young man
Our beautiful boy
That's how I look when I go to my local knitting club. Lol.
The woman next to him was nit middle aged. Mid thirties maybe?
@@MrMichaelConstantine eh, close enough. Middle aged is around early to mid 40s to about 60 or 65.
There's a good reason 4 'dat:
Old-r ladies,
u see,
they'll take 2 knit-n',
more than any oth-r kind o' needle art;
since large knit-n' needles r easier 2 work w/,
mean-n' less chance o' wounds,
if u know what I mean,
O.K.?!
I clicked on this video expecting to see somebody learning the tailoring process...
Man, was I surprised.
Fantastic video, though. I’m really impressed with how determined you were to learn all these processes.
Do your friends call you a spinster, yet?
*practises judo for 8 years in preparation to floor a sheep*
Laughed my ass off at the finished product. Looks itchy as hell. Great job though.
brucelee12 agree. It looked so itchy but watching the process of making one just earned my respect.
Bruh 🤣

Well, it's tasty. I like cooked silk worms

These videos would be great for economics classes to teach people about the division of labor
Ryan Gardner I think one of their videos already mentioned division of labor. I'm not 100% sure, but it might have been part of the sandwich series.
kchen075 Yup he made one with examples of salt
Exactly! Then you’d never hear free market fundamentalists ignorantly claiming “if you don’t like the system you’re free to leave and survive on your own”.
Yeah. No. I wanna see this guy grow his own penicillin next.
For all that talk about the guy being clumsy and often getting comically unsatisfactory results, I think what he did in this video was very impressive. Tried several methods, several different materials, and even though he ran out of it for his suit, you could tell it was a good attempt. Good job!
Indeed
having done quite a few techniques of that I can say: those need YEARS of practice to achieve something decent (knitting + spinning + sewing). But its quite relaxing and rewarding to do so. Im as far as having knitted my own shoes (okay those are what would be considered barefootshoes and ofc not water proof, but hey!) so yeah, I could go out beeing dressed fully in diy stuff :) I just never do because I dont have that much stuff that matches each other, lol. Also I never made underwear.
Your suit had me dying man. It didn't look terrible when it was cropped at first. I love the unique style, you could never buy that.
A hairless alpaca looks so weird
I know right. When I still worked on a farm I nearly pissed myself laughing the first time I saw them shorn.
Looks like a deer
A hairless anything really looks weird
The hairless Alpaca looks as Vicuña.

That sheep jumping made my day!

I think it was happy because it was no longer burning hot from all that wool.
I saw this comment as I saw the sheep jump
Mine too
And then he boiled the silk worms

What they meant when they said “suit yourself”

An idea I had was how to make a bed from scratch. That includes pillows, sheets, blankets, a mattress and a comforter. It might take a while though. Maybe you could do a how to make weapons like a knife or bow and arrow.
wtf those are easy as hell the only hard thing is the bed
From my experience I can tell you that the bed is very easy compared to the mattress. You will need a lot of material and if you dont have all those expensive tools it is a lot of hard work. Pillows on the other hand are just stuffed with different materials. That is one of the next projects for me.
How to make a knife: google it kek
How to make a Bow: Take a stick and an elastic kek
How to make an arrow: sharpen a stick kek
i was so focused & immersed in the cool processes that i forgot what he was even making lol
I wasn't prepared for the end.😂😂😂😂😂
You should be so proud of the content you create! You put so much effort into creating it and its so professional and the end result is is so awesome and interesting. This really should be viewed more or on TV! Thanks for making this :D
You should try making a pair of shoes to go with your suit.
Ethan Alexander Out of leather, using traditional cobbling techniques.
You are one patient dude. And it looks like your project afforded great travel, wonderful artisans, industry prof'ls and experts, and much satisfaction. Great videography!
The poor silkworms.
Not gonna stop me from wearing silk tho, too damn comfy.
Am I the only one who got emotional during the silk moth part???
We weren't intending on doing another remix episode so soon again, but since I was gone on vacation last week we're a little behind on our next series so that seemed like a good excuse to revisit some of our old content, especially since the previous version got demonetized. New series starts next week: cosmetics!
How To Make Everything I love your channel
How To Make Everything hi
Why did it get demonetized if you don't mind me asking?
Most likely because it originally had a segment on making leather from deer hide that apparently offended people.
How To Make Everything i learned about cotton and wool at school

Also you used Garter stitch for your project?
whata jump by the sheep
My health teacher was telling had a bunch of pictures on the board of people wearing glasses and you were one of them
There's nothing more pleasant and life affirming than hearing someone explain a subject they are knowledgable about and have a lot of passion for.
I was having a really bad day today. No happy moments, all negativity. When he got done shearing the sheep, let it go, and it did that little jump...that made me smile...im having a better day now.
if you ever need cloth for a long-term project again, maybe you could try making linen. that'd be interesting.
6:05 Guy on TV- Hey there! I just wanted to talk to you about the history of cotton harvest.
Me- oh no 😱
Kyle Pearson I think that was a Woman
So, I have spent the last two days playing this video on repeat in my shop. I am a tailor and you hear a lot of questions as to WHY suiting can get so expensive. While this is only a single persons efforts, it highlights all the processes that go into making a single garment concept. While obviously there is even more that goes into refining the fabrics as well, I think this shows the value of the work. Kudos.
I simply can't come to terms with the level of time and investment this man goes through to make a video. I'm completely astounded.
This longer format fits your channel great, I hadn't had a chance to watch the other videos about this topic but since the other ones were demonetized, I figure there's no time like the present.
You deserve more subscribers!
d phan no he doesn't
I agree, this has been a great experience. Good show, good editing.... I don't subscribe to new channels often, but he got me!

This guy redefines the term “from scratch”:
To make a suit, first i will create a human!
okay okay: when you say "from scratch" you mean "FROM SCRATCH"
Try making a light bulb from scratch! Use your clearest glass and try to make a metal compound for a filament
you always underestimate the task, all tiny products are the result of hundreds years' industry evolution
Which is why it’s so ridiculous when anCaps say “if you don’t like it you can leave and be self sufficient” ha yeah, sure
Susan is such a lovely heart warming lady, whoever might run into her, give her a hug! xx
You know, this is the type of guy I hope more people aspire to be. Pursue knowledge and dont be afraid to join something like a knitting club to learn useful skills.

Me: What?
The alpacas are so cute!
Wow! The hemp is so fine! Like hair! Shout out to Judy and Susan for being awesome.
This is as bespoke as it can get. Brilliant stuff. Makes the host look like a man from the past.
Hemp a new industry? its been used farmed for ropes and clothes for 10'000 years now. the fact that its banned in some places seems completely ridiculous to me. I mean America had a navy too, which needed ropes, right?
SteveAkaDarktimes Government is insane, what else is new. Jailing nonviolent individuals for ingesting something in the same form it emerges from the ground in (cannabis), total insanity.
Because a lot of people farmed cannabis by disguising as hemp
@@daa3417 Why is there a difference if it emerges naturally from the ground or not? I mean a lot of stuff that emerges naturally from the ground is a LOT safer to consume i you treat it before ingesting.
Kristian Fagerström The difference is in the law, which is what government operates by. I can understand why pharmaceuticals are controlled as the majority of them are manmade intellectual property. Cannabis is not, I don’t care if you call it natural, immutable, or God given, the point is that’s it’s entirely natural NOT the creation of man. Therefore regulation by man of something that is as natural as ourselves is complete madness, the creator controls is an axiom that most law is based on, so whom created nature?
@@jerkjerkington3874 i never thought of this but it makes complete sense.
"So after a month being attached to these little guys, they have to be stifled--with my oven."
Never seen a man go this extreme to make one 17 and half minute video...hats off man...'A' for effort.

That woman teaching you how to wash and spin the wool was fantastic.
Lots of respect for you Andy! I'm glad your channel has grown so much over the years. (Came across this channel when it had 10k.) I'm glad you've gained a larger audience.
How to make knife from scratch?
Man At Arms has done a few of these - they made a replica of the katana from Kill Bill using traditional techniques from smelting ore into steel all the way through forging, heat treating and finishing. czcams.com/video/CNuEDtnVdeM/video.html
WCKern yeah saw that however they are expert blacksmiths with great knowledge and skill. I would like to see how an amateur could do good suggestion though
I agree it would be fun to see the whole amateur process - probably the easiest way for him to do it from scratch would involve get a source of iron ore and smelting into steel - but alternatively, he could take pure iron oxide (rust or hematite, magnetite, etc.), reduce it using hydrogen (from water electrophoresis) which would produce pure iron, and then melt the iron into an ingot and carburize using calcium carbonate. It would be a more involved process, but would make a more refined steel.
Or a whole series like that. Making an entire arsenal of weapons
Definitely something I'll be doing sooner then later. I've already collected a bunch of iron ore, but I haven't gotten access to the right equipment yet to be able to extract it. A "weapons" series is very likely going to happen early next year as in the process of making the chemicals for my camera from scratch, I'll also have everything to make my own gunpowder from scratch.
I came for the tailoring process - I stayed for an incredible education on materials!
This channel highlights the awesome talents of so many people around the country!!
14:17. Brutal. I don't think I could do that to the little guys...
Yeah, that might be why i'm not a big fan of silk.....
What sucks is that they were doomed from the start. Starting in places like ancient china breed to produce silk. And nature not giving them a mouth to eat, they die of starvation. It's a sad fate.
if it makes you feel better, they found away to harvest silk without killing them.
It makes me happy
