    This shows a global trend with which I almost agree (which are average, good, excellent...). And I also think the 3 best ones are Death Star, Portal and Epic (although they are not the ones I would recommend to a beginner player due to their difficulties^^). Excellent video.

    @scratchy523 Před rokem +19

    Yes, I’d agree that the Portal and Epic are the best Perplexuses I’ve ever played with, but I still don’t understand how you find the Portal easier than the Epic when it only has two additional checkpoints (Epic has three) and is 25 obstacles longer. I can see why you might think that (most of the time it’s just that you need to take it easy and not just keep doing stunts) but I always find myself getting further in my Epic than my Portal.

    • @RCInsight
      @RCInsight  Před rokem +5

      I guess maybe less frustrating would be a better description than easier? It is longer and less checkpoints but it feels way more balanced to me. I completed it wayyy faster than I completed the Epic and there were no spots where I got super stuck or frustrated on the Portal like I do on the Epic, so that's why I see it as easier overall.

      Ok so I just did a super casual speedrun (as in, not at all good, first speedrun attempt in years) and it clocked in around 1:30 so 1:52 is definitely way slow. If I had to guess my best was probably closer to a minute, but idk if I've ever hit a sub 1 minute run.

    Amazing video! now I'm ready to start my own collection with the best models. -- Just a question please, does anybody know if the new EPIC is a little different to the old model? the colours are different,...but I guess there might be some more differences since the new ORIGINAL - now called BEAST - is not exactly the same as the classic one.

    • @RCInsight
      @RCInsight  Před rokem

      I can't say for sure since I don't have a newer version of the epic, but my assumption is it would be nothing more than a reskin and maybe it possibly addresses issues older versions may have had. I know with the Original for example, there's one section where mine is missing a wall so you can easily jump more than halfway ahead on the maze, but newer versions, even before it was rebranded to beast fixed that issue. So if there were any changes with the current version of the epic, I'd suspect they're hardly noticeable.

    Thank you so much for this video! I just discovered Perplexuses today while browsing Amazon for maze balls for my 6 yr old. He loves mazes (on paper) but we’ve never tried one of these 3d puzzles before. I’m thinking of getting him a perplexus go spiral to start, but do you think it’d be too challenging for a 6 yr old?

    • @RCInsight
      @RCInsight  Před rokem +1

      I think it depends on which spiral you’re talking about. The mini spiral or the GO! Spiral. The mini spiral for sure is super easy and I don’t think that would be a problem. GO! Spiral he may find challenging but it really depends. I also loved 2D mazes when I was that age and I think I got my first Perplexus at 8. That would’ve been the Perplexus original and it was challenging (took me months to complete at first) but I loved it.
      If he has good hand eye coordination and patience, even if it’s challenging then I think really any Perplexus is fine. So long as he can handle to frustration of failure and be able to put it down and come back to it then I don’t think you’ll have any issues.

    • @RCInsight
      @RCInsight  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi there,
      Sorry for the delayed reply. I'm honestly not sure. I have another video, which is ranking all the perplexus from easiest to hardest, that may help give you some additional insight.
      I'd say any of the mainline puzzles that are currently still available for retail would be a good place to start. That would be the rookie/rebel, the original/beast, the epic or the portal.
      Starting with the Epic or the Portal might be a bit much just because of the scale and difficulty, but if you're used to puzzles and dexterity toys then it might be ok. Personally I'd start with the Rebel. Yes it's easy and you'll probably beat it in a day but it's still one of my favourites and I have fun with it to this day (10 years later) it'll help you get the ropes and then figure out if you think you can tackle some of the bigger ones like the epic no problem. That would be my advice.
      (ultimately if you have a lot of fun with it you'll probably end up wanted to collect most if not all of them anyway lol)

    The ones I play the most are the green go! (despite how short it is it has nice challenges) and the rebel (it’s the easiest, but very satisfying and introduces several
    Classic obstacles).
    The Original has way too many sections without a rail from the third checkpoint on. The Epic is very challenging, but some obstacles (esp those where you have to turn the globe 180° very fast) are downright mean.
    I also have the rubik 2x2 but I find it way too challenging. It is hard enough to find the path, so I don’t find it very playable

    • @RCInsight
      @RCInsight  Před rokem

      I agree with most of this! I definitely often find myself coming back to the perplexus GO!'s and the rookie. The rookie is absolutely the most satisfying to just pick up and play through on a whim even though it's pretty easy overall.
      Finding the path for the 2x2 is definitely it's biggest drawback. It's an interesting puzzle but finding the path is a nightmare. I literally have the whole thing mapped out in my notes and still struggle with it. Mapping it took forever as well.

    I totally agree with your top three, though Portal I have yet to play with (hopefully winging its way here right now!), Death Star is just a little bit too difficult, with all the difficulty packed into the central third of the path - the three or four real-awkward moves have held me up so many times, that jump-and-drop and the no-wall section! But, I am appalled to hear you say that you haven't yet beat Epic - come on, get your mind off Lego and concentrate on Epic over Christmas!
    It is telling though, isn't it, how most of your top ten were designed by one man, Michael McGinnis. He really is a genius at designing these games, I wish I had a home and pockets large enough to own one of his enormous sculpture games!
    Rebel is not difficult, for most of us hardened Perplexus-players, it's really easy, but it IS fun and fast, I actually like to play it at a very slow even speed, making the ball move as beautifully smoothly as possible. I do think you ought to pick up a Tiger Superplexus at some point, it's much heavier and plays, I think, nicer than the Original, but that's just my opinion.
    Let's enjoy Portal and all the others as we go, and fingers crossed for the next challenge!! Thanks for the video, I agree wholeheartedly with all your choices.

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! See the response to this video has been great! It was a little daunting at first just because it is such a big video and long too lol but I really didn't want to break it up in to parts either. I'm really happy with how it turned out though, because it definitely took a while to put it all together.
      I'm also quite surprised at how much people seem to agree with these rankings lol. I was expecting at least a few contrarians but I guess it goes to show the best Perplexuses really are the best ones and there's not much question about it. I agree it is very clear that McGinnis is the master when it comes to designing these things and I'm so glad he's still at it.
      I would like to clarify though. I have beaten the Epic, several times now. What I haven't done is beat it start to finish without using the checkpoints. Something I have done for every Perplexus except my top 3 which also happen to be the biggest. I am probably going to give that a go over Christmas nonetheless!

    • @nancysloper
      @nancysloper Před rokem

      @@RCInsight When I'm not working on the laptop or gardening, I try to complete one of the games, so that I'll have completed them all in one day - Epic generally stalls this idea, but I'll keep going, they are a great distraction game. I view Epic as being reasonably (for us experienced players) easy in the first half, but much harder second-half, I love some of the moves, the stairs, the awesome drop to that tunnel, the zip-line sequence, that raised-level ziggy-zaggy bit, the no-wall bit to the see-saw, the amazing final drop three moves from the end - you get so used to doing them that you forget how difficult they are!
      I hope MM comes up with another Snitch-sized game soon - anything from him is more than welcome. The marketing is so poor by Spinmaster, they are virtually non-existent over here.
      Thanks again for the videos, I do refer back to them sometimes, and doing one that long is a challenge to make. Your studio set-up for the visuals is fine, your audio as well. top three for difficulty? Well, 1 Death Star 2 Epic 3 Portal... who knows!

      Honestly don't know how to find some of them, since I was lucky to get most of them when they were first available. I did have to scour the internet for a few of them (mini twist, and keychain mini's) but thanks to a stroke of luck I managed to come across some on ebay.
      I do agree it's a shame they aren't more popular because they are definitely top tier toys. Maybe one day they'll explode for some unknown reason!

      @@RCInsight Yeah, hopefully. They're also probably the closest physical toys I've ever come across to video games, they have a lot of the exact same appeal but are still actual toys which is great. But it's sad they've really dropped off in popularity (since I remember them once being at least somewhat popular) and are so weirdly hard to find oftentimes (even my copy of the recent Perplexus Portal I got for Christmas has a bunch of scratch marks and stuff on it, it's not in pristine "new" condition it seems, idk if that was due to rough shipping or what).
      After searching around for the past couple days, I will say it seems like Amazon is probably one of the worse places to look for these things, I didn't even know the Perplexus Go! Stairs one existed because it straight-up doesn't exist on Amazon (only the Spiral does, which I also got for Christmas) but is easily findable on Walmart, meanwhile on ebay I was actually able to find a fair number of options for the freaking original Superplexus from 2002.

    Clearly, there is no such thing as the "perfect " perplexus. What would a perfect perplexus be like in your opinion?

    • @RCInsight
      @RCInsight  Před rokem +1

      It's funny you ask this. I had an idea for a future video that sorta had to do with this topic. Here's where my nerdy English major comes in but "perfect" is a very loaded term lol. I don't know that there could ever be a perfect perplexus and obviously what's perfect for one person isn't for another. I think at its core what I want to see in a perplexus though is a large puzzle (think epic or death star or portal) good obstacle design, where it still feels challenging but none of the obstacles feel like they're solely luck based. And lastly just overall solid game design and aesthetics. Those are kinda the combination of things that would make the best perplexus imo
