    FTDX10 with failure to install firmware turns out to have a short in the HDMI/DVI chipset and that pulled too much current from the 3.3v LDO regulator. Will need to remove the DVI chipset or replace.

    Thanks for this video. As the owner of a FT-DX10, I always disconnect the power and antenna during a thunderstorm but never thought of disconnecting the USB. That has changed. -N7BWB

      Sweet! We may have just saved a future FT-DX10 :) Another commenter suggested a galvanic or opto separator for the USB connection. If I get into digital modes I'll be taking a look. Part 2 video coming out where I put in the correct 3.3v regulator and replace the power MOSFET.

      @@JuliansRandomProjectA fellow ham mentioned that potential differences between the ground of the rig and the PC could cause damage not even an hour ago... I have two Dx10's... one with the same error you were seeing, and a useless 10 year warranty... and another year-newer one that works. SMH! I've debated about pulling the boards out of the good one to see if that fixes the bad one... at least to isolate the issue. Used to do that with printers back in the day... "FRU"'s ... for when your not a surface-mount/component-level tech, but know more than all the other guys you work with and have no problems tearing something apart and replacing suspect boards.

    Awesome. But it’s gonna take a lot of resoldering to move the VFO back to the right, flip the screen right side up, not to mention move all the buttons to where they should be.

    It was nightmare but I finally picked up the V4 version of SDR Blog. I already have 2 V3's and the DX10 and 991A among others so I have a few more testing devices to pick up and then just coax and connectors and I will have quite the winter of projects for myself.

    Good troubleshooting, maybe you can ask Yaesu for a replacement regulator. To protect my FTDX-10 from ground loops I connect to PC through a USB galvanic isolator, at the power supply I have disconnected negative output from chassis (230V AC ground is still connected to chassis of course) and FTDX-10 ground is connected through lightning protection to a ground rod right outside my shack bonded to mains ground and when I am not operating the radio I disconnect everything .

      Smart. I found the exact regulator at Mouser. Will have to set up an account/relationship with Yaesu now that I've start doing repairs full-time as a business.

      Would've been nice if Yaesu would've suggested isolating the USB to begin with.

      @@JuliansRandomProjectWhat part of the country are you in? I've got a Dx10 that needs repair...I'd rather fix it and use it than sell it for parts. 😆🤣

    Any issues with using leaded solder for rework on the DX10? The radio was probably manufactured with lead-free.

    • @JuliansRandomProject
      @JuliansRandomProject  Před 7 měsíci

      No issues. Leaded solder flows better and is easier to work with. The industry went away from lead for environmental reason, not because it was superior :)

    Yaesu supply spares for all their radios. They supply them to dealer service centres. I know people who have called them and been able to buy spares retail. I live in the UK and Yaesu have a subsidiary company here.

      Back in the day, AES used to have a repair Tech at every location. Unfortunately, AES sold out to HRO... and that was that. Not sure any of the dealers in the US actually have someone on staff that can fix anything these days. It's sad really. I worked for AES back in the mid 90's.

    what if u cant fix it? do u still charge the customer for ur time?

    • @JuliansRandomProject
      @JuliansRandomProject  Před rokem +3

      Right now, no. But it’s reasonable for technicians to charge to diagnose the issue then give a quote to do the repairs. I’ll have to implement something like that once I’m full up with work orders.
