Regarding watches being affected by magnetism, Sinn customer service dept, in a study of 1000 watches, found that 60% were affected by magnetism, over 1/2 had severe defects caused by magnetism. In the face of such precise analysis, iI might be a good idea to use a small compass to check for magnetic fields in your work area.
That's interesting, but what means affected? I could imagine that every piece of metal in our civilisation is affected, but question is: Does it restrict the use of it? Great idea with the compass!

Unidirectional is superior for winding because when bidirectional changes direction, there is a gap of about 10-15 seconds till it starts winding again. However, unidirectional winding watches are slightly louder (a thick caseback and rubber protection helps reduce the noise). For sheer efficiency unidirectional is superior in capturing kinetic energy, by far.

I would agree with Tim about the anti-magnetic properties. About magnetism, I agree. There's is a risk, and it does happen, that the spring gets magnetized. But magnetic fields decrease rapidly by distance, so I see just one main area of caution in everyday life: Cooking. But there are many other reasons not to wear the watch then, heat, steam, hot grease flying around... so just don't wear the watch when cooking. Laptop speakers are sometimes mentioned, but it shouldn't be a problem unless you rest your wrist right on top of one. (Most laptops have the speakers near the rear, and not where you place your hands.)
some laptops have magnets by the bottom edge, below of the keyboard and mouse pad, so that when closing the laptop the laptop remains shut. A Lenovo of mine had it here and I only noticed when I was typing away and then my bracelet got attracted.
@@gurtana Yes, that's true. My MacBook does not have it, but my old Lenovo work laptop does. But it's a small and weak one at the center near edge, so when I'm typing the watch is 10cm away from it, which should be safe.

Re: screw-down crowns: you have undermined your answer to the question by citing the Datejust having a screw-down crown (SDC). A SDC is superior in design and utility, which is likely why Rolex incorporates them into it's watches, even dress/sport watches like the Datejust. The questioner makes a valid point; we would be willing to pay a little more for the additional safety of a SDC. Only the wearer of a dress watch would know whether it has a SDC - they don't have to be big and clunky. The rationale of, "no SDC because it just doesn't fit" sounds like the father saying to his children, "no, just because I said so." I like the SDC concept (in case you couldn't tell). IMHO. Keep up the good work and keep at it! Thanks for the video.
Screw down crowns demand thicker cases, so they are not always suitable for dressy thin watches, or you have to make much tighter tolerances which means big price increase.
If it was that easy for the movement in your watch to become magnetized in the modern world, your run of the mill watch would include a faraday cage or anti-magnetic components. I think it's more don't stick your watch on top of a powerful speaker, don't take it in the room with a MRI machine, etc. And if you're an MRI tech (or radiologist I guess), well, buy one of the watches with antimagnetic properties instead. A bunch of Omega models use the same antimagnetic movement as the Railmaster.
Thanks for answering Tim! But I still wonder, if this distinct Sound of Rolex, or (as I learned from you) Omega watches, would be replicated in fake watches made in China.
