Martin Carthy, Family, June Tabor, great finds. And topping it off with the wonderful Neil Innes.

Thanks Michael, yes I think I had a great fair experience!.

Hi, Rob. Some nice folk pick-ups. I’ve been listening to a bit of Martin Carthy recently, as a neighbour gave me a box of her late husband’s records, which was mostly folk and had half a dozen Carthy albums. Great stuff. I saw him at Glastonbury back in ‘95. While all my mates were popping pills and heading off to the dance tent to see Orbital, I made my way over to the acoustic stage to see Martin Carthy. I’m so rock and roll.
    Cheers - Hedley

Ha ha!..I would've done the same Hedley!, never been much of a dancer or clubber me.
Always a treat and a privilege I think to be given someones' record collection, never tire of the thrill of anticipation of what you'll find.

Very pleased with what I got for sure.
      Early Martin Carthy is great.
      All the best

Cheers Dan, I think it's only the second time I've seen it in the wild, first time it wasn't in great condition and it was priced up at almost 3 figures..this one was a decent VG+..the dealer had nothing to worry about, it plays great.

Hi Rob - great score with the Martin Carthy album. I picked-up a new reissue of that album recently for considerably more than you paid for the OG. I really like that June Tabor album. Nice you got Parachute, a recent OG find for me too and a great album. A good decision to venture to the fair. Cheers Dale

      Hi Dale
Really pleased with what I found..I've now spun that copy of parachutes and it plays perfectly, was very impressed with the attitude of the dealer.
Delighted to have found the June Tabor too, I really enjoy Carthys' debut, a very important folk record I think.

Hello Rob. Good that you’ve completed your Family collection. I agree that their first is an absolutely wonderful record, but there are good tracks on all their studio albums.
I don’t know Parachute by the Pretty Things but should check it out. That was a good find.
I recently got a copy of Psychomodo. Very quirky stuff.
Enjoy your Bank Holiday Monday, John.

      Thanks John
Parachute is a great album, heavier than SF Sorrow and with some jazzy touches, it's just a great listen.
I think those first 2 Cockney Rebel albums are Steve Harleys' best.
Thanks for watching and commenting as always.

Lovely weather! You're lucky - it's been very cold and wet here in Cumbria all weekend. You've obviously got too much choice down there in the Midlands in regard to record store and fairs Rob that you can afford to ignore one for 4 years 😂! If it wasn't for the small fairs we have here in Cumbria, all my purchases would be on-line.
Nice pick up of the Martin Carthy debut - you can't really go wrong with him (Shearwater might be my favourite with his superb rendition of Famous Flower Of Serving Men).
That's one Family album I need to pick up sometime.
The June Tabor album is wonderful. Love her as a vocalist, but boy does that portrait on the front cover scare the bejesus out of me 😱! Not a woman to mess with methinks.
I think one of the plus points of going to small fairs regularly is that you build up a rapport with some of the vendors. The guys at the Kendal and Windermere fairs are great - always do me a good discount and would be open to resolving any problems.
Loved the Bonzos, but never heard that Innes album - nice find.
Hope you're having a good bank holiday Monday.... Pete

I really need to button it in terms of my weather reporting..I'm inevitably going to upset someone!..yes, kicking myself as to why I've not visited that fair before..nuts really!??..still, made up for lost opportunities I think..I'm going to be on the hunt for more June Tabor, she's terrific.
The vendors there were great particularly the guy I bought The Pretty Things album from, I'll definitely be dealing with him again.
You're right, there's a lot to be said for building relationships with vendors.
Hope you're having a good Bank Holiday Pete.

You always have a lot of music I have never seen before but I do know Randy Newman. He has some of the best lyrics. I tried to get into Family Rob but it never quite clicked for me. It’s a group I should try again, I use to find all their albums pretty cheap in stores

I think it's a vocal thing with Family..some people can't hack Roger Chapmans' voice, I love it as its' so expressive and the bands' music is very inventive.
It's like for me with Geddy Lee of Rush..fingers down a chalk board time!!.
Yes, Randy Newmans' lyrics are very witty and clever.

Not been to the Moseley fair - need to check it out as you got some good stuff - I used to go the Moseley Dance centre for its indie discos back in the day for the free refreshers !

    • @robison5396
      @robison5396  Před 2 měsíci +1

It was a particularly good fair, not just because I was lucky enough to pick up some decent records but the attitude of the vendors themselves, very willing to help, honest and happy to do deals.
Refreshers, now theres' a blast from the past!.

Morning Rob. I like that Randy Newman album but I'm not sure what you will think of it (just thinking about what you said about John Martyn's eighties records). I love Martin Cathy- his best of cd is one of my favourite comps of all time. Thanks for the plug for our Steve Harley vid. The Psychmodo is great fun.

      Hi James
I wouldn't have picked up that Randy Newman album had it not been heavily discounted..but for a few quid I'm willing to take a chance..we'll see..
Martin Carthy is a bit of a treasure, really nice guy as well.

I think that is the only Randy Newman album I don't have - big fan. I actually like Parachute more, as well - its wonderful. I adore Neil Innes - stuff is real hard to find here (except for The Rutles, of course).

Hey Chris, glad you agree with me on Parachute.
Neil Innes is a very English artist, probably struggled to find popularity in the US and Canada, but I think he was hugely talented.

Sorry, I forget to say what I paid, if I recall correctly they were as follows
      Parachute £40
      Psychomodo £8
      Family Entertainment
      £ 7.50 ( half price)
      Neil Innes £12.

Not bad at all? Especially for that Pretty Things LP! That’s been going for well over £100 when i’ve seen it before, and I wouldn’t blame you for not getting it when it’s that sort of money! Had this problem with Shirley Collins albums, always at high prices, but I guess you pay for credibility don’t you!!

    • @robison5396

@@twitchygiraffe4636 Yes, I was lucky to get such a good deal on the Pretty Things album and the guy was straight with me which was nice.
Shirley Collins albums can be pricey, I picked up an original No Roses on Pegasus and I think I paid £55.

Who would be believe it? A local record fair with decent prices! I'm being sarcastic actually because the 'established' fairs are quite elitist at times and have same old sellers selling same old Beatles, Stones, Floyd etc overpriced and dull. Pop up shops and smaller fairs are more interesting because it'll be from collections of individuals / curated more personally. Ritz is covered by the church on a covers album. I saw Steve Harley twice once at greenbelt festival and once on a park for free same summer same mates in Swansea whilst on holiday i think he must've been in an early 90s revival or something. Doh if only I'd known about the martin Carthy you could have had my one its in my selling box! Oh well. Have a good rest of the bank holiday.

    • @robison5396
      @robison5396  Před 2 měsíci +1

I recognised quite a few of the sellers as they do the Vinyl Bank fairs amongst others and they're pretty decent guys and open to do deals..there's always one or two vendors that insist on selling decent titles in sub par condition for a premium and then refuse to budge on price. It always amazes me how they manage to stay in business, I guess they probably trap the newbies??..
All in all an excellent fair, with new sealed and bootlegs at a minimum..my kind of fair for sure.
Cheers Martin, hope you're having a good Bank Holiday.
