He has power he just doesn't commit as hard as Dricus does
That's just not his style. You will have to throw punches like Izzy, Conor or Cannonier, to get just a HIGHER percentage of knockdown's or KOs. Sean is just a very sturdy, very strong, 90% power jabber/boxer. Enough to stunt, as DDP himself noted; but not enough to do KO, in most of his punches.
DDP is more reckless in how he punches and kicks; but even he is not known for clean one-punch KO. Even all his "finishes" were done mostly through using superior physicality/strength to fell an opponent like you would fell a tree through many hard, persistent chopping acts.
Or via subs. The Darren Till was a good example: Till was clearly superior to DDP in pure striking; but Till ultimately fell prey to DDP, from a sub, when the inept grappling Till was taken down once too many times, by a more sturdy, more well rounded DDP who's able and WILLING to take HARD punishments to land his own powerful shots... because DDP clearly is not the most agile, the fastest, or the most precise striker at 185.
He's probably not even among the Top 5 "best strikers" at 185. But, again, his extraordinary sturdiness, willingness to suffer one to get one, and general well roundedness... those 3-4 major features of his got him to the top.
Look at what he did to Izzy. Anyone else would've knocked out Izzy during that first round when he stunned him. Sean landed every follow up punch and Izzy wasn't wobbled

Because Strickland didn't see it coming. Watch the replays, Strickland didn't notice the left hook until it landed on him. The strikes that hurt the most are the ones that catch you by surprise.

I agree with your analysis on Strickland possibly waiting for Dricus to get tired after the first and second round. I think one of primary issues with Strickland is that he offensively didn’t appear to pressure as much and left it to the decision of the judges.
That wasn't a mistake on Sean's part. DDP new how dangerous Sean is when he can apply pressure and was not allowing him to dictate the pace of the fight.
Those jabs were sure plowing some pressure into his face. Weather he was walking backward or not that has nothing to do with reality of losing a fight.

The rules come from boxing. A jab and a straight are light punches because of the zero wind up. Overhands and hooks would be medium hits and knockdowns would be heavy hits

Doesn't matter what he says, it comes down to who landed more damaging shots. If Sean land 100 jabs in 1 round and ddp land 1 jab that wobbles Sean.....ddp win the round. Powerful shots are simply worth more. It is also true for boxing as well. Determining how much small shots are worth vs big shots are where things get muddy
I am going to say ddp wins. Simply due to Sean corner urging him how desperately they must win the 5th round and Sean reaction when ddp won which seems like he wasn't surprised. Sean also did not trash talk in the octagon like usual showing that at no time he was confident he was clearly winning showing that it was a close fight.
Also dricus missed many shots..and these shots from dricus where he's landing on a shoulder or somewhere random that's not effective whatsoever are scored the same as a strickland clean punch to the face.
So in theory, if one fighter lands 30 light in a round and the other guy only lands one heavy, the guy who lands one heavy should win the round even if theyre outstruck 30-1? 🤔

The fight truly is 50/50. I think Weasle's breakdown of the scoring is well thought out and also those who disagree.
I see it the same way. Watch it back for Round 2 and you'll see that Sean was hurting Dricus more than he was getting hurt. And he was narrowly avoiding a lot of shots. Sean in the 2nd didn't really react to anything Dricus threw, but Dricus reacted a lot showing he was feeling them a lot. Weasel put every body kick of Dricus as a Medium and put all of Sean's jabs as light when Dricus was reacting
Forreal those body shots were SO effective but there’s literally no bruising or redness by the end of the fight
Counting from the face of Dricus definetly. DDP was extremly lucky with his cuts, to hits on the side of the eye landed two cuts and one was bleeding badly. I think if it wouldnt have been for those, ddp wouldnt have gotten the rounds.
I don’t think it was a robbery but Sean landing 70 strikes more and 30 more significant strikes and losing the fight seems wild to me.

Strictland's jab being classified as light each time is silly. Many of those jabs were power jabs that busted DDP up.

You can see from all the lumps, bumps and swelling on Dricus face (way more damage than a couple of cuts) that the jabs were indeed "damaging strikes". Think I'd rather take 4 medium strikes than 11 jabs.

It was a close fight. However I think many Strickland's jabs should be counted as medium strikes. The jab is underrated. Look at Du Plessis' face. That's not light damage!

Yes I agree those jabs did cumulative damage and were harder than light strikes , subjective scoring . Sean could have went for more combo's including body kicks . On cumulative damage Sean wins no question but the fewer harder looking shots , including kicks were landed by Dricus and then there are the takedowns. Sean needs to add a bit more variety to his game , more kicks and get a few takedowns , that visible effort would make it plain to the judges rather than the cumulative damage done by his lighter looking punches .
Sean beats you up with accurate volume punches and Dricus clubs you with harder but fewer blows.
Jabs are meant to control momentun, stop pressure, control pace and set up your power shots. You just don't win fights via backpeddaling and jabbing. Strickland tends to be technical and lacks that killer instinct. Happened with the Cannonier fight as well. You don't really see the damage in the body kicks and leg kicks Dricus' landed. Even his coaches wasn't happy with some of the rounds.

The fact that DDP looked like a cauliflower at the end of the fight makes me think that a lot of those “light” strikes of Strickland were in fact medium. Also, Sean rolled with a lot of DDP’s strikes reducing their impact. I think Sean won a razor thin decision.

How is the punch at 3:27 a medium strike? Sean pulls away with it, even you say it’s a grazing shot, and there’s no visible reaction. Compared to Sean’s strike at 4:21 which is given a “.5 medium” rating, seems inconsistent.
Edit: 9:02 another example of Strickland receiving half a point for above scenario. 12:55 Dricus lands the exact same punch as at 3:27, but it’s counted as a light strike. No consistency

3:27 was a way bigger punch than 4:21 watch it in real time man. 4:21 bounced off ddps guard and subsequent top of the forehead whereas look at the placement on dricus’ strike. No comparison. 9:02 was more glancing again, and 12:55 didn’t seem as clean from the angle but in real time it didn’t look as damaging as well Strickland got out of the way of it far better.

I have a hard time giving someone a fight who got outlanded in head strikes by a wide margin because he landed some medium power body shots and leg kicks that never visibly took a toll on his opponent. The damage Sean did to Dricus' face from striking is immediate, while you're kind of relying on a hypothetical scenario that the body shots would start wearing on Strickland if the fight went longer.

cause its only a jab, its the weakest of the punches, its the reason why it only made dricus eye swell after so many, yet dricus busted seans eyes open with power shots (left hooks and right hands) and made seans face all bloody in the 4th and 5th (he even made sean bleed in the 2nd from a left hook)

I think giving Dricus "medium" shots for alot of those are extremely subjective and arbitrary (the shot that opened the cut is obviously a heavy strike tho), while Strickland's double digit lead on strikes is more concrete and convincing. I didn't realize Strickland landed that many more strikes in round 2, this breakdown convinces me that this is an even bigger robbery than I initially thought

@redeyexxx1841 i didn't care who won before the fight, I'm a fan of both guys DDP just didn't do much in the second to win the round other than open a cut, and Strickland swelled his eye shut so those cancel each other out. DDP's only clear round was 4, even 3 could be given to Strickland. Strickland 4-1 is as much of a stretch as DDP 3-2, Strickland 3-2 is the right scorecard. This is basically Sandhagen vs Dillashaw all over again imo.

I may be mistaken but I was thinking the 2nd round was when DDP’s left eye really started to swell… I would personally favor 15 “light”/jab attacks over 5 mostly grazing “medium” attacks, but it was an insanely close fight that could’ve been scored either way. Thanks for this breakdown man.

Most of the shots Weasel scored medium for Dricus were grazing because Sean was either rolling with it or moving away from it which makes it less hard. I think he gave Dricus way too many mediums in round 2 and didn't give Sean enough when he was clearly hurting Dricus with his jabs more than he was getting hurt by Dricus mostly
There's no super detailed breakdown of how scoring works like Pride had so who knows how exactly the judges are rating things. But in Muay Thai a few heavier strikes always take priority over several light strikes.

I really think Sean’s choice to abandon the teep kick hurt his game. He used it so well against Adesanya. The issue was Dricus blitzing and closing the distance and getting in tight. If Sean maintained the distance it was game over.

Can someone please explain to Dominick Cruz that "damage" in the scoring criteria does not mean cuts. He thinks that if one fighter causes a small cut that bleeds that they win the round. Damage means hard strikes that could contribute to a finish.

Well, to be fair the Unified Rules to state that lacerations, swelling, bruising, etc. can be used as visible evidence of Impact (the term they use instead of damage). In addition, given how a swollen eye or leaking blood can have ramifications on a fighter's ability to effectively defend themselves or even lead to the fight being stopped by the physician, I think it's fair to value those things and score them with a moderate degree of emphasis...
...that being said, now that I'm done playing Devil's advocate and making it sound like I'm defending Dom's absurd commentary, Cruz goes way overboard. You touched on one of the things he does that annoys me the most. It is absolutely possible for a fighter to win a round despite being cut. I still can't forget about the time he said "They look at these fights in terms of who is doing more damage, not really who's winning the fight. And a cut is damage." Like Dom... stop.

It was a very close fight. It really felt like Sean was landing the cleaner shots, at least with his hands. Most of Dricus' punches were either blocked or didn't land cleanly. Sean's striking defense continues to impress me. Those body kicks by Dricus were good though. It really could have gone either way. It seemed like if Sean just upped his volume and power, he probably would have decisively won rounds 2 and 3, like he won round 5. I felt like the better fighter didn't win tonight, but there were things he could have done to change that. Hopefully in a potential rematch he'll show a little more aggression and urgency in securing the earlier rounds. Good for Du Plessis though. He fought his heart out and did enough to earn the victory last night.

The issue I find is that Sean is a very composed fighter that never really gets wild with big fight ending shots. He is always looking to wear down his opponent rather than end a fight. I also think that his jabs are far more powerful than they look, you can see that by DDP’s face at the end, lumps, bruising, swelling. I think many of those jabs should be in the medium power range and not light. How much damage someone inflicted is usually pretty clear on the faces of the fighters. I don’t think I would call this a robbery but I definitely think the video and the judges got this one wrong.

Normally when you talk about jabs being light it's because the opponent is moving away from the punch, Dricuss is walking straight into most of these jabs or is flat footed so I don't understand how you're considering most of them as light? Dricus's face looked like an egg carton after the fight. At 3:08 you say it's a big jabs that snaps his head back but then give it a medium? In the past for someone like Usman I don't think you'd call that a medium strike.
We had it tied 2-2 going into 5th. We thought @Sean Strickland took 5th. 3-2. Look at the stats, Strickland had more strikes, significant strikes, and did more damage to Duplicis. Duplicis did get 6 take downs but not a single one was he able to keep Sean down.

The only issue with blood on the face is it can impeded vision. Other than that it literally means nothing. Anyone whose had a cut on their head will know that head cuts bleed like crazy even if they are small and minor.

Idk bro like in my opinion, facial swelling denotes far more damage than cuts, especially from glancing blows and especially if the eye is closing up. Bruising denotes flush hits whereas cuts can be from the gloves scraping at high velocity even if most of the concussion force missed. So for me it's undeniable that damage goes to Sean Strickland.
That would mean that I would count far more of the light ranked jabs to medium. Reaction or not I think if it lands flush a jab should be a medium strike.

Although you make good case for medium vs light strikes. I disagree with it. Those looping "medium" strikes from Dricus were not efficient or impactful at all to really be counted as medium. I wanted to point out that in many previous videos you were aligned with damage trumps all in MMA, and if you look at DDP his face looked like a train wreck post fight, reminds me of GSP's face against Johnny Hendricks, while Strickland had one cut as a counter. I get that point counts, but I wanted to remind you of the most important criteria that's missing in this assessment.

@@vPegasus Round 4 sure, but Round 2 and 3 are debatable. I'm going to Debate Round 2. Going into that Round Dricus' eye was not damaged at all, and by the end of it it was swollen almost shut. That damage was done all in Round 2. And Sean left that round with only a tiny cut that wasn't nearly as bad as Dricus' swelling. Sean was never hurt badly and never reacted to Dricus' strikes in Round 2, Dricus' best shot was a headkick that didn't land flush and was the end of Dricus' foot. Sean didn't have any reaction to it that would imply it was super damaging. Sean connected with his jab many times and a lot of the time Dricus' head would push back and he would react to it. Dricus gave more reactions to Sean's shots and the damage on Dricus' face showed that Sean outdamaged Dricus in that round, especially since Dricus was fine going into the 2nd. Just because something hurts doesn’t make it a medium or heavy strike , it’s about how impactful it looks / the reaction formed by the opponent when receiving said strike . That’s why having a good poker face is a must in mma
