- Today is the 1 Year Anniversary of the premiere of Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie. The first public screening was on July 21, 2014 at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. It was an epic night for all of us.
Here, for the first time on CZcams, is the special effects documentary from the Blu-ray/DVD. It shows the creative process behind the practical effects in the film.
Most of the film was shot in the Los Angeles area, inside studios and exterior locations which all required expensive permits. We also worked with union cast and union crew members. It was a big production, but ironically, many of the effects were done with a small local crew, Cinemassacre-style, after I returned home to the East Coast.
Enjoy this documentary, which only gives a small glimpse at the making of the film. There is so much more to it. I plan to release more videos like this, over time.

Well, at least you guys had fun.
Lol
MisterSinister making a movie is tremendous work. it is 10% fun, 90% stress.
***** And no sex.
Well I didn't have fun, and apparently they wanted the fans to have fun watching it, but it failed for me and probably many others...
I thought the movie was just kind of OK, but it's still amazing to see and hear how much work and effort was actually put into it. I've always been a big fan of practical effects, so seeing how everything was made, is always super interesting.
Yeah the film is definitely worth watching for the effects.
Kneefoil This. The movie really was just kind of okay. It let me down because of the fact I waited so damn long to watch it. It's fine though, I'm not gonna be all butthurt about it.
Yeah I agree. I was expecting more but I got enough.
Your profile picture is legendary, one of the greatest games ever made!
Kneefoil Yeah, its kind of hard to imagine what I expected from an AVGN movie but it was fun and it had some good laughs.
Can't wait for Board James: The Movie
Neither can I
There’s sm more to do with that property tbh
Out of all the stuff he did I really never found board james to be to enthralling... I don't know why I mean and I've watched all his stuff
Will Thrizzal It’s not for everyone, but the last season is drastically different
Did he confirm that would be the next Movie
I love how enthusiastic James sounded when Deathmassfnaiugnidfn was destroying the tower.
*Death Mwauthzyx
After this movie James was never the same
This is why I like watching movies like Jason and the Argonauts. Movies like Predator, Alien, Terminator, Spaceballs all OG special effects. :D
PistnRods For real? You said Spaceballs but not Star Wars?
tonyAJ420 what's Star Wars?
ilovedragons spaceballs, jokingly yes. ;)
ilovedragons Star Wars is a bad parody of Spaceballs
KeeseToast That's the point, at least to me
I don't get all the hate for the movie. I thought it was really refreshing. The visual effects have that Cinemassacre charm, but are also impressively practical. The story was very well told, and always kept moving forward. I could tell that a lot of hard work and dedication was put into making the movie, and I hope it inspires up and coming filmmakers to tell the stories they want to tell without Hollywood getting their fingerprints all over them.
SuperSmash3DS Maybe they were expecting something else. This is exactly what I thought his movie would be like and its totally his style.
SuperSmash3DS I agree
SuperSmash3DS They were expecting something flawless and Hollywood level of style... bullshit. I enjoyed the movie, and had no hesitation about spending £30 or so on the Blu-ray.
Is it one of the best movies out there? No. Not a long shot. But it's still an enjoyable movie
It was alright. The problem for me was that I could care less about 2 new characters. It should have been Mike or Kyle. Someone fans recognize. I would probably never have the urge to watch it again. Been keeping up with avgn since the early, early reviews...but this film simply did nothing for me. The ET review at the end was the best part for me. Still love the new reviews and the Board James plot right now is fucking excellent. Also anything where James and Mike talk about old games or old films.
CDWatk I disagree, it was completely the opposite to what I was expecting. The movie had none of the charm and humour of the series and was over ambitious. It was disjointed and there was way too many ideas but most importantly it wasn't that funny. If it was funny you could forgive most of its failings. I look forward to any new film James has in mind, now that he's learned so much about the mechanics of film making he could concentrate on a better script. Im not saying the film was bad, it was just really average. James has to be commended for he's work ethic and ambition.
This documentary was better than the movie.
Don’t say that ):
This is the thing I love about practical effects: they have a story behind them. How the effects were achieved is as fascinating and entertaining as the film itself.
Such a fun project to be a part of! It was an honor playing Death Mwuathzyx. Also: best imdb credit ever. -MC
9:35 we officially have a keeper...
She’s experienced
@@googleaccount9256 Very experienced.
Oh man James should do his own Kaiju film, Death Mwauthzyx scenes remind me of classic Godzilla films.
Death Mwauthzyx vs Jet Jaguar!
definitely!
ziljin that's the idea!
I really found this fascinating! I'm not really into any sort of film making but I do enjoy seeing how practical effects and a touch of digital magic can really make some great visuals.
James, being the humble man that he is, forgot to mention that the miniatures were all filmed in a warehouse in the middle of the winter, with no heat. Everyone on set was such a trooper on this labor of love. It really turned out great, thanks again for having us!
The Nerd dosen't know who Mike is. Watch episode 115
A year later and still no Australian DVD release. Now that's bullshit *guitar strums*
DragonPhlegm Guitar strums?
More like guitar picks
You could buy a digital version if your just looking to watch
DragonPhlegm Guitar strums? Metalocalypse?
seetube5
Yes I did and I still felt ripped off.
It makes me happy to know that James got to shoot the movie that he always wanted to. He's put in a lot of work to get to this point, and if anyone deserves it, he does.
For the longest time I didn't realize that it was actually E.T.'s neck and I saw it like it was in the movie.
Seeing this movie in Aurora, CO with my buds was amazing, love this movie, loved the experience, love this documentary.
Am I the only one that enjoyed this movie? Don't get me wrong, it was very flawed. But it wasn't terrible, just enjoyable.
Wow, a lot of work went into this film, great job James and the Cinemassacre team!
Wow, thanks for the look behind the scenes! You guys made one helluva movie and I had almost as much fun watching this as I did the film itself. You guys have come a long way since college and it is so damn cool that you have all remained friends and got to make this awesome movie together!
This guy is so fucking inspiring on just how much passion he has for what he does and how much effort he puts into it. Well done sir
...did you watch the movie?
@@nustde00 This exactly lol.
@@nustde00 I did. I enjoyed it. It certainly wasn't masterful but it's overhated.
Super Mecha Death Christ should be in the sequel.
I feel like James Rolfe could be like an Adam Sandler kind of guy. Not out to make anything groundbreaking or critically-acclaimed but just have fun making rich kid's school project films with his friends and get some laughs out of people, only James Rolfe would probably add more substance with his films.
IMO, the Movie was pretty good, but not as great as I expected it to be.
I don't think the final Review of E.T for Atari was what anyone expected, seems as though people hyped up for it being the worst game ever made but the review actually praised it for the most part hahaha
This was a fantastic film and a love letter to all fans... I can't believe that there are people who, after seeing all the hard work that went into it, are still saying the film was bad... It was excellent!
I've made movies on tight budgets with both practical and digital effects, and trust me, its no walk in the park. This is an extremely ambitious production and the effort put in by everyone involved is incredibly inspiring. I love these behind the scenes footages and James appreciation and respect for classic film production practices are a joy to watch.
omg...kyle...WITHOUT a hat..... :O i thought he was born with it !!
16:30 The fuck is that thing on his table?
+hardrockinhere i thought i was the only one who saw that.lol
LOL
WTf
GREAT JOB! Just great, we all know tat the current effects are awesome, but making the entire movie this way is just awesome as well, i love these kind of effects. You have even more deeper respect from me now!
Great documentary of an even greater movie. Great job James and team!
1 year anniversary huh? Wow, I think I might watch it again. I'm really not sure what people were expecting with a AVGN movie, I find it hard to believe that anyone that was disappointed with the AVGN movie have even watched more that 3 episodes of the show. It was such a great tribute to the old style of visual effects, this is a type of movie you wont see ever again in the future. So I guess have fun with your transformers visual diarrhea movies if you didn't like it
I agree but at least james has a life unlike the people here in the comments
It's really fascinating to see how all of these effects were made, I have to give major credit to James to go through all of this.
this wasn't a Nerd movie, it was a James Rolfe movie, which doesn't mean it was bad. Just definitely not a Nerd movie.
You did it James! You finally made your movie. You used those child skills to make everything look good. You had amazing camera shots, dozens of locations, props upon props and many different actors. I've never seen so many story elements in one film! You introduced the main character through an AWESOME intro, built up the story, and had love at the end just like any good ole Hollywood film these days. Don't pay attention to these silly comments, I'd like to see them get as far as you have, because frankly, I can't even get a good camera shot when I used to film. I can't wait to see what you will produce in the future :)
"from the storyboards to end its always entertaining"
Critics: imma pretend i didn't see that
I can't believe they put so much work into the movie. I actually can't believe it because I was extremely high on cough syrup throughout the whole thing and remember nothing other than the wacky comedy relief black sidekick.
Wow.
Thanks for sharing the artistic aspects with us, James.
Great behind the scenes for a great movie! Good job James!
It melts my heart to see you've made your dream come true James. Thank you for that.
old-school special effects NICE
That was great!! It was really nice looking behind the scenes!!
Absolutely fantastic and inspiring! Want to see more behind the scenes footage!
Great to see how the film was made. Amazing job, everyone!
24:13 - Man i love this shot and the transition cut ^^
This fuels my filmmaking passion, this all looks so fun
Awesome, James and the staff did a great work with the special FX.
I found the special effects the best part of the movie. I found the deliberate shitty effects funny.
The movie that killed a movie makers passion for making movies. Crazy.
As a fully trained model maker and special effects artist this warms my heart listening to how much love and affection you have for the practical arts James 😊
So awesome! I love the creativity and dedication. Bravo guys! :)
I would love a vhs version of the movie!
the chick on the right at 3:25 got so pissed xD
Thank you for all your dedication and hard work =)
Loved it; big fan/continuing watcher, Congratulations on your success.
That was more interesting that the film. I really like AVGN but it was misplaced to use it in this way. I get all the special effects and b-movie love, I like it myself. But the problem for me was the cast and story, it gave us a bunch of characters outside of the nerd that we didn't give a shit about. It took me 5 attempts to watch the film all the way through it really did bore me to tears.
Wow, sure looks like you guys had more fun making it than I did watching it.
This looks awesome! I love physical effects like these.
Finally! I've been wanting to see this for awhile.
Holy shit you got the original Mikey?!?! I already wanted to see this but had no way to and now this??? Ugghh, I was have to get this movie.
Don't it sucks
Chelsea Dubois Do, it's good.
Tate Adams its a ok movie, a low buget ok movie. nothing more, nothing less. it dousent suck nor is it good please quit hyperbolizing
bowmanruto You realize that's totally subjective, right?
RandomNPC15 not entirely, most of the time when you judge something its a mix of subjectivity and objectivity. and when i judge something in terms of if someone else would like it i look at it completely objective (or at least as much as possible) and how i see it, objectively the avgn movie is a ok/average movie
I really hope we get another AVGN movie in the future ^_^
I think the practical effects were my favorite part. I loved them.
Very cool. I always like seeing how fx are made and appreciate them more.
That statue at 14:02 on the left side. Where can I get one?
I actually enjoyed watching this more than some of the movie!!, the irony!!. Looked like irritating fun to make :o)
Awesome. Thank you for posting this James.
It's been a year already !?! It doesn't seem that long. I was really glad I got to meet you there. You were nice enough to sign so many cartridges and shake what seemed like everyone's hand. It was a lot of fun.
I thought the movie was awesome! Sure, it wasn't perfect. But they all did an amazing job considering. Good stuff. AVGN and all his friends are the shit! Thank you all for the hours and hours of entertainment!
I enjoyed every minute watching this.
8:34: That HUD reminds me so much of Mario 64...
This was great, thanks for this.
Seeing the writer in this interview really explains why the script is the way it is
Having the geography of Las Vegas accurate is what sold the movie to me.
thank you Amazon video (and Amazon prime) for including this monumental film about some guy reviewing old games in his basement!
Love the movie from day one but surprised at how much went into it and how long it took. Glad to see the behind the scenes. It's my campy guilty pleasure.
This wasn't an AVGN movie, this was a movie with AVGN in it.
Johnny Cage What would an AVGN movie be? A 2 hour game review?
+Johnny Cage I Agree It was a good Movie But it was more like Cinemassacre: The Movie With AVGN as the Main Characther
Its hard to do pratical in extreme high definition
We had to wait 1 whole year since the film's original release just to hear about the special effects.
Very nice work guys! Enjoyed the film a ton!
I liked the movie *hides behind chair*
It was awesome seeing this movie at PAX Prime :) Thank you for all of the awesomeness!
What do I love more than movies? Watching the bts of it.
Oh man they missed an opportunity to have the monster flipping the bird as it punched though the building.
+VeggeMight But the monster did just that, as of what I remember...
EDIT: It actually did.
I was just thinking that!
hope he makes another one but with the focus on the old AVGN anger and comedy, I think he's too old now, young AVGN still had good testosterone levels.
Thanks for sharing this Jim.
Excelent work Everyone ! Keep it up! and thank you!
What were they thinking!....
This movie see,m to have a mixed opinion, I for one watch CineMassacure films for the enjoyment, this movie got the classic feel of the types of movies James makes. For those of you who don't know James loves making movies and always has this was his dream and should inspire most people to get to do what they want to do and I felt like this documentary got the feel of that, this movie may not win awards for best motion picture but it sure as hell is original classic and I will watch it again and again and again, thank you James and others for this great movie!
Not that I've ever tried to make a film, but... fucking wow. It makes me just want to put it back on, just to justify their effort.
When the nature of your work, becomes play. Well done to you all!
Here James direct a movie like this is pretty awesome. I like his cheesy humour, and his old-style practical effects.
Very inspirational!
This was a lot more entertaining then the movie iteself
Watching this makes me appreciate and enjoy the movie even more.
The movie was pretty good, and knowing James and the crews passion for video games n' shit, it's just a wonderful thing to watch this happen. I hope we will see a second part.
1 year already? O.o
"If you say it correctly, lightning will strike" :D
Also, the FUCK is that statue at 16:34 ??
Whoa! Did you see that. XD
Watching this movie gave such appreciation to practical effects, it was 1 of my favorite movies of 2014. So far, the one movie that combined both practical effects and computer generated is that Mad Max movie. Such love and care for their movies deserve such rewards.
I'm still trying to get a BluRay movie.
I love these types of videos.
It is really inspiring how much effort love and soul went to this production!
I have to say I am on the side which thinks the movie is not as good as everyone expected it to be, that especially sad seeing how hard they worked on this, I can't ignore the problems the movie has but still appreciate people who really tried making a good Movie for the Fans, this is by no means and no one can tell me that a "Bad" Movie but it is still not enough the reach the realms of a "good" movie, but I am looking forward, none of us could do such a great production in this scale I think James and the others will grow throughout this and maybe we see another big movie from James, doesn't even have to be AVGN since I think it would be better for him having a break from that and focus on something else maybe, but that's just my humble opinion, I hope many if you enjoyed the movie
